Spacehawk's Space Madness Page 5

Yeah, here it is. Spacehawk is back after a long hiatus.

In this page I felt the need to throw in a couple of homages to 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Trek. (Or, a couple of ripoffs of 2001 and Star Trek if you aren't feeling generous)

In panel five I tried a slightly different shading technique. I thought it turned out pretty well for this sequence but I'm not sure if I'd draw a whole story that way.

The posture of Spacehawk's mother in that panel is loosely derived from a Picasso painting. I think it's called "First Steps", but I'm not entirely certain. Although the emotions of the mother on this page is far different from that of the mother in the painting I thought that it suited this image very well.

Spacehawk's Space Madness Page 4

The biggest challenge of this page was how to render the jumbo-sized bottom panel. I decided to eliminate the panel borders around it so that it would look more open and expansive. I thought it served as an apt rendering of Spacehawk's descent into madness.

The imagery itself I consider to be influenced mainly by Steve Ditko and Pedro Bell. However, I wanted it to look a little rough, a little raw, and a little unpolished.

I was a bit unsure about the alien though. I thought it might be better to add a brush to his outlined frame in order to make him stand out a little better. On the other hand, I sorta liked how he melted into the background.

I ultimately decided to keep it the way it is.

When I first came up with the idea of this story I immediately thought of the phrase "I've been considerably more doomed than that in the past, and I turned out fine." I'm glad that I got to use it here.

Oh, and it's always nice when I can shoehorn in a bear wearing a silly hat.

Spacehawk's Space Madness Page 3

I doubt that the revelation about Spacehawk's condition will come as much of a surprise to anyone who's been reading the story. As you may have guessed, this whole short story is just a flimsy pretext for me to draw all sorts of psychadelic and surrealist nonsense. That stuff begins to kick into high gear on the next page, and that should be pretty fun to draw.

I injected the narrative caption into the third panel at the last minute. I just wanted to insinuate that enough time had passed between panels two and three to explain why the sprinklers were off and Spacehawk was dry again.

The alien's form in the first panel was suggested in the script I wrote for myself. All of his other forms, however, were done on the spot as I was drawing them. I liked the idea of the alien waving his arms about like a muppet when he's screaming "No!", so there it went. I think I like the clown the most out of all the transformations though. I think I did a pretty solid job on his facial expression.

Many thanks to Cheryl for e-mailing me this scan of the page. You've been beyond invaluable throughout this whole computer virus ordeal.

Spacehawk's Space Madness Page 2

It's a little bit late. Still, it's done and it's here.

I think this page turned out pretty well. Not to pat myself on the back too hard or anything, but I do think that I picked a pretty good color scheme for this story.

While working on this page I suddenly realized that I made a goof with the character design. In the 1940's comics Spacehawk is wearing a green spacesuit with yellow gloves. I made his uniform all-green for this story.

I'm sure that the multitudes of die-hard Spacehawk fans out there are currently preparing to burn me in effigy at this very moment.

Spacehawk's Space Madness Page 1

Here's page one of Spacehawk's adventure in Public Domain Funnies. I didn't flat-out mimic Basil Wolverton's artistic style for this project but I did add touches here and there. The hypnotic wave pattern that's serving as the background for panel one is a pretty good example.

I kept the interior of Spacehawk's ship fairly in tune with the way it was originally. I didn't spend too much time studying the colors of the old comics though. Nothing inside that ship, or even the ship itself, remained the same color for all that long. I made the ship itself green so it would match Spacehawk's spacesuit.

The title caption also echoes that of 1940's Spacehawk. (Except for the use of the Star Wars font. I know it's a corny touch but I couldn't help myself.)

For this story I decided to write a script for myself before I started drawing anything. This isn't my usual method but I decided that I should have some foundational framework set up before I began drawing. You may see my reasons why as the story progresses.
