Day of Remembrance 2009

It doesn't matter what your religious, political, or personal views are - torturing and murdering an innocent person is wrong. Yet the world at large is perfectly content to look the other way while transgendered people are subjected to appalling treatment and brutality. In the year 2009, over 132 people have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred. Still more cases were simply never reported. These people had lives, dreams, friends, and families. Many were children or young adults in their early twenties. None of them deserved to die, and none of them will ever be forgotten.

(Incidentally, this picture features a character that has yet to appear in the comic, Ivy. She'll probably show up sometime after chapter two. The scene depicted takes place prior to Ivy's arrival in WUSA.)

Page 14 FOR REALIES

Just when you thought it was safe…

You may notice a SLIGHT differences between this version of page fourteen, and the one that was initially posted on Wednesday. Though I must say, the paper I’m using right now leaves much to be desired. That texture! Alas! I’ll probably try to find something new once this batch runs out.

This page goes out to everyone who’s ever been rudely interrupted when all they really wanted was a moment to themselves. (People who are reading this while at work, I’m looking at you.)

I’m ashamed of how long it took me to get this final version of fourteen online. On the bright side, I got a chance to hang out with some local (and far more experienced) webcartoonists (and fellow comics fans) on Saturday. We had a grand old time, sketching the afternoon away. It’s always a thrill to hang out with cartoonists, and I hope I get another chance to do so in the near future. Next time we meet, I aim to feel less like a beginner, and more like a fellow tradesman, if that makes any sense.
Speaking of which, I also joined the Milk In The Pantry Secret Santa art exchange on a lark. It should be fun.

Anyway! I guess some kind of new character debuts on this page, or something. Huh. Cannon was partially modeled on a friend of mine from college. To be precise, I had a rough idea of what I wanted the character to look like, but couldn’t quite hammer it out on paper. Enter my school-chum Noah, who just so happened to look very similar to the design I was going for. He was gracious enough to model for me, and the day was saved. Epilogue: I actually ended up widening Cannon’s jawline at the last minute, not because there was anything wrong with it, but simply to add a little variety amongst the character designs. Not that you can tell on this page.

Now I wish I’d drawn him waving his arms in excitement.

It’s also around this point that I started using blue pencil lead. It’s nice for a few reasons, namely because it doesn’t smudge nearly as much as regular graphite lead, and because it forces me to ink the damn thing before I scan it in.

In the name of continuity, I must confess that I fudged things a bit with the spots on Leech’s arm. They technically don’t extent much farther than her elbow, but I thought the joke was funnier this way.

Stay tuned for page fifteen next Wednesday, which is probably one of my favorites in this chapter. But not my MOST favorite. ^ ^

PS: Can anyone help me add hypertext links in my author’s notes? My every attempt seems to result in the tags showing up as text. Do I have to customize my site before I can use HTML in this section, or what?

Page 13

As promised. I added a splash of color to the portal at the last minute, though I think the whole image could stand to gain a few more hues.

Welcome to the last page of the prologue. Let's see if I can handle a REAL chapter, now.

Hope everyone had an excellent Halloween.
