[581] Preview: Fatum Chronicles

Okay, I said I had a real page for you for today, I know. I'm going to upload it tomorrow but I just wanted to show this off first.

As many of you may be aware, a few months ago I announced Fatum Chronicles was being picked up by an indie publisher/art studio. A few deals were made and it looked like it would hit stores by yesterday, with an anime being made for air next year. Unfortunately, for the past two months, problems have been arising.

The main one? Creative differences between my publisher and I. He knows FC is based off of GG, but wanted to change a few roles. The Wizard becomes a mistaken hero who was trying to prevent Gold, who was a mercenary hired by the Red Shadow, from destroying Fatum with a giant laser cannon the Guardian has. And no, I am not joking. He seriously wanted that for the plot.

But another big problem was, try as we might, we couldn't agree on the character designs. What you see above isn't exactly what I had in mind, but I still like it. He wanted some 'bling' and a backward baseball cap, along with Soul wearing an even shorter skirt and other stuff.

And finally, I found out our main distributor wanted to go with the 4kids method where the characters just sounded wrong and there was nothing but rap in the background. I am not exactly fond of the genre. Also, the ideas they had for the voice actors were sort of like Krillin from DBZ for the Red Shadow leader, Ash for Aussie, stuff like that.

Unfortunately, depending on your personal view, I liked this idea too much to see it raped. I still had ownership and was able to bail out of all the other deals, since most of them I hadn't signed into, until Fatum Chronicles was all mine again, but it looked like it wasn't going to happen.

I then got an email from a talented young manga artist who wanted to continue the project without that studio's help. I told her what I wanted, she gave me what you see above, asking the right questions and only making slight variations on my ideas, enough to give more of a flair and interest to the characters.

All in all, I'm happy. This way, I can do things my own way and without any pressure. Also, I don't have any real restrictions. I love it. I don't have the big step i was promised, but at least I can still be proud of what Fatum Chronicles is.

Real GG page tomorrow. Seeya then.

Until next time

[580] Revelations: Break

I had a goal to reach 50 readers before I could say that GG has been around for three years. And today, I can say with great pride that it has finally happened.

50 readers in three years. But I still get hits between 300 and 600 a day (100-200 on weekends) so I'm guessing I might just have a few fans who have yet to sign up. However, it does bother me that my readership growth is so slow.

Is it because GG is boring? Is it the number of pages in the archive? Is it the quality of lettering and effects? Is it merely because I do barely any advertising and rely too heavily on word of mouth and random looks? Or is it because I keep changing my schedule every few months?

Seeya on Friday (Definitely this time. I got the page already made)

Until next time

[579] Revelations: Alliances

Oh my God! It's an update. Sorry about that guys but I've been really busy getting the manga version of Fatum Chronicles ready. I should be able to give you guys some character designs by next week.

Also, at the end of this week, it will be three years since GG began. Months ago I was hoping to speed up the updates so that page 600 would be on the same day as the 3 year anniversary, which will be the 10th (This Saturday).

Anyway, guest comics will be great, as I'll also be able to build up a buffer. However, if you'd prefer to enjoy a comic of mine that actually updates, check out Living With Insanity. Sorry about playing favourites, but I just love drawing my stuff more than doing sprites at the moment.

Seeya on either Wednesday or Friday (There will eb another update this week).

Until next time

[578] Revelations: Vanquish

God damn this Christmas was more hectic than normal. My cousins came down and I spent a fair bit of time watching them. And then there was the bit of last minute shopping I had to do. Anyway, it's all over now.

So how was everyone's Christmas? I got some good stuff. What about you guys?

[577] Revelations: Arrival

And so, the answer as to how the kids actually got into Fatum has finally been revealed. Seems like a bit of a Deus Ex Machina now, but it was always going to be something to do with the Wizard trying to make himself stronger.

Right, review time. This time I'm going to do a Marvel one. The Death of Captain America.

What got me into Captain America was the Marvel tie in TPB (Issues #22-24 plus the Winter Soldier Christmas story). I picked it up, thinking it would be interesting to see the civil war mainly from one of the leaders' perspective. It was mostly about Sharon Carter and Bucky, with the Captain only making a few appearances. It's a good thing too, because it meant the end of Steve Rodgers wasn't a big deal for me.

[Spoilers]

Now, I only have parts one and two, so I can't judge by part three. Also, to help make some sense of it all, I'm including the Civil War TPB as it's pretty much a prologue. Anyway, bear with me. The basic plot is the Red Skull has gathered Dr Faustus, Zola and Aleksander Lukin in order to take over the world. With Faustus pretending to be a SHIELD psychiatrist, he has managed to manipulate several people, including Sharon Carter. Meanwhile, Bucky is working with Nick Fury and eventually Captain America surrenders.

While being transported for his arraignment, after Red Skull pulls some strings, the baddie Crossbones aims a sniper rifle at one of Cap's guards. Steve Rodgers being Steve Rodgers, he takes the bullet. While everyone panics, Sharon Carter runs to her lover and, by Faustus' manipulation, shoots Rodgers three more times without even realising it. He's rushed to hospital, but doesn't make it.

Day in and day out, newly appointed SHIELD Director Tony Stark is hounded by the press as to who will take Captain America's place, despite saying over and over that there will not be one. However, a lawyer gives him a letter from Steve Rodgers, asking that Captain America be continued and Bucky be helped. Killing two birds with one stone, Stark designs a new Captain America outfit and Bucky takes up the mantle.

First off, the story. I think I need to pick up the Winter Soldier and Red Menace books, because they reference a few things I don't get from those stories. Personally, I hate it when writers do that, but then again I guess he is marketing to long time fans. However, if you read over it again, you can get a rough idea of what happened. Other than that, Brubaker has not done anything to disappoint me.

As for the art... I don't know, but while it works well with the WWII flashbacks it doesn't exactly seem like the sort of style I would use for this sort of comic. Well drawn, but very dark and almost brooding. Something I'd expect for the Punisher or maybe DareDevil (Need to pick up a book featuring them). Not to knock Epting and Perkins, they're good, just not what I had in mind. Oh well.

Overall, I'd say 4.8 out of five overall. Not the best book I've ever read, but it doesn't really have anything I can definitely point out that is wrong.

Have a good weekend.
