Issue 5 - And Some Mastorism News

Hey everyone! No, sorry, no new pages here. But I have this really cool new cover to show you! Yep, this is for chapter 5, which is a tad back in the story from where we left off (see "Proselyte" in the archives.) The fantastic colors you see here are the work of the amazing Norman Wong!

Alright, I also have some timely announcements that I'm using this posting as an excuse for, so let's cut to the chase:

First off, the issue you see here is now available for sale at Indyplanet.com as are all of the Mastorism issues. You can find them here. In addition to being printed versions of the webcomics, there's also the "back up feature" which is a history of Mastorism, and some other odd and ends.

Also, at the same time, the newest edition of Lady Fight is also available there along with the entire Earthbound Comics line, which I helped put together, and also has an 8 page Explosion Proof story that I did.

We'll have those and more available this weekend at APE (Alternative Press Expo) in San Francisco. That's October 17th and 18th at the Concourse. Ben and I will have a table set up there to try and expose the world to Earthbound Comics. If you're in town, come on by, we'll be at table 507.

Finally, I'm attempting to start a new blog. As you're probably aware, I like to type a lot, so its an excuse to do so, hopefully with a purpose. Its a combo of art, information about process (both what I know and what I'm learning about making comics), and just generally my adventures being a (very) independent comic type person. SO, if that interests you, check it out. Not much there yet, but I can tell you that I'll likely be posting stuff about APE very soon, and I hope to keep it up to date with everything I work on, offering some insight into my processes and methods of producing comics (particularly the new Mastorism that's coming up). So-- hopefully it turns into something good. We'll see. http://inkoutsidethebottle.blogspot.com/

So that's all for now, and for quite a while here. Hopefully I'll be breaking ground on the new Mastorism soon, and keeping you posted on that via the blog. Until then, you can feel free to check out the other comic I'm running here on drunk duck... Explosion Proof!

Take care,

Here Comes EXPLOSION PROOF!

Hey everyone! Here Comes Explosion Proof!

Well as I promised in my last post, I'm going to be posting my other comic of Lady Fight fame here on Drunk Duck: EXPLOSION PROOF!

Explosion Proof is quite a departure from what you may be used to in Mastorism. As it should be. I take advantage of it NOT being Mastorism to do things that I don't feel I can put in the pages of Mastorism (pretty clear from page one). Also, instead of being a sweeping epic, Explosion Proof (at least this incarnation) is conceived as a series of very short stories for the mentioned Lady Fight publication, though the stories do interconnect. You might also notice that the writing style is much more decompressed, so in some cases you'll get a lot less story per page. That's the difference between designing a page for webcomics and designing a page for print.

Anyhow, so this is sort of a special treat, I guess, for Mastorism fans who are interested in my other work. I invite all of you, please, to come check out Explosion Proof:

http://www.drunkduck.com/Explosion_Proof

I'm going to be updating this once a week, to give my self more time to do work that will get me closer to putting Mastorism back in production, on Wednesdays. I hope you will join me, should be fun. Fun for you to read the comic, and fun for me to go over the older pages again!

For those of you interested in this here pinup you see, its actually NOT pulled from an Explosion Proof comic, but an original drawing for just this purpose of getting you folks to come check out EP! And for those of you truly curious artsy fartsy folks: Most of you know I mainly work digitally, but this particular drawing I inked traditionally with a brush (its actually sitting right in front of me). So there it is-- I do know how to work one of those things after all (I'm as suprised as you, believe me).

Alright, thanks as always, for stopping by and commenting. This will likely be the LAST post to the Mastorism site for a few months. Most likely for the year, though I might pop something in to announce my APE appearance, who knows? (oh yeah, I'll be at APE October 17-18)

Take care,

What If...? FANART by MushroomComix

I TOLD you there was another post coming!

One of the coolest things my Mastorism experience has given me is the experience of receiving fan art! Nothing like it. Especially when it come from fellow DD'ers who have comics of their own that I thoroughly enjoy. Its fun, its a compliment, and its always interesting to see the characters interpreted by others.

So, today we have a fan art from Josh aka MushroomComix, artist/writer of Yo! Comix (http://www.drunkduck.com/YO_Comix/ - FYI: Rated M). This is actually Josh's SECOND fan art, and I actually won it by spotting the most references in his comic (go figure). One of my favorite things about this piece, and Josh's comic in general, is it reminds me of the old, uh... less serious... days of Mastorism. This is not far off from something you might find in on of our old books, actually, so it has a certain nostalgic ring to it in that sense. Jeff and I actually had a long running joke about cheese puffs (LONG before the south park cheesy poof thing), culminating in a nice knock-off of the classic Green Lantern #85 cover (google it, and then use your imagination). SO, short story long, THANKS JOSH!

So now what? Well, I've discovered that posting has become habitual, and that even in my break from PRODUCING Mastorism, I still want to post at least weekly, SOMETHING. So, I've come the the decision that I'm going to start posting my OTHER comic creation, Explosion Proof, next week. As some of you are aware, EP is a short form story comic that I do for an anthology publication I work on with Sleepbringer's Ben Ferrari, titled Lady Fight (available on IndyPlanet.com - second volume out soon - PLUG PLUG PLUG!). So I have two short stories completed, and the third is actually one of the things I'm working on in my break, so I'm going to be posting that starting next week. One day a week, not sure which day yet. I'll make a post here to lead y'all over to the new comic. VERY different, but equally as fun, I think. I hope you all get on board with that one.

Until then, again thank you very much for ALL of your reading and ALL of your commenting thus far, and I'll be back with more Mastorism before you know it!

Wellsee - Thanks. I'm looking forward to it too!

corey - Thanks! I think its the Phantom Lord who deserved it, truely, though. There will be more to come in the future, so worry not!

AzuJOD - Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

DAJB - Thanks! Going out with a bang, I suppose!

repoman - Thanks, and if I didn't leave you hanging, maybe you wouldn't come back!

trevor - Thanks!

mushroom - Thank you.. and thanks for the fan art! As much as I've anticipated the break, I'm also anticipating Matorism's return! Ah! Can't make up my mind.

jazzcop - Probably the best thing I could hear! That was my goal, and I'm more than happy you feel that way. I'm also glad I've opened the door to do new stories too. Whew! I don't think I realized what I was getting into though!

The Trial of John - Page 132

Well, it looks like a forgot to set the date on my last post, and judging by the comments stats, etc... IT threw a few people. So I'll skip the replies for today.

And yes, this is the last page of this story. There's more material on the way thrusdsay, but as far as this particular story goes, we're done. BUT not to worry, the next story is already in development, and I'll be getting started on it very soon. I made a commitment to myself that, aside from chapter breaks, that this comic would update without fail every tuesday and thursday without fail, and I have kept that commitment to this day. Its taken a lot out of me-- so I need some time off before I continue. But, I promise, I'll be back, and I hope that you all come back too!

THANK ALL OF YOU for your continued support, readership, and enthusiasm for Mastorism. You really made this an extremely enjoyable experience, and I hope to continue to give you something to read for some time to come! Like I said, I'm not going to disappear into nowhere, and I will definitely be back with more Mastorism. I'll try and keep you posted here of any developments.

That said, it IS a holiday here in a America, so I'm off to go spend it with my family, but Thank you all again, very much, for all the support!

The Trial of John - Page 131

Well no toaster awarded today, unfortunately, but some toast* goes to Oldguy for his guess of a random assortment of letters that I didn't bother to memorize! Woo hoo! Congrats!

Yep, we're back in Universe One, the Destonian Universe. They kicked off the story in the prelude, so here they are closing it. Bookends, if you will-- FEARFUL SYMMETRY! It was cool to get to go and draw them again after so long. Lots 'o' fun.

As of this writing I have found out that Mastorism, the Phantom Lord in particular, has won a DD Award! BIG BIG BIG thanks everyone! The PL was up against a diverse group of really good antagonists (oxymoron?) So its an honor, to be sure. I make this comic for all of you readers, so, I couldn't have done it without you. Hope everyone's been enjoying the awards. I lost the Sci-Fi to amazing comic the Ends, no surprise there, to me, but Mastorism still (as of this writing) has one nom out there, Best Black and White art. So cross your fingers (though its very possible that by the time you read this, we'll already know).

Sigh. ONE MORE PAGE, folks. Sad. Don't even want to talk about it. But there's some really clever fan art coming right after that, and then.... who knows!!!

Alright. Enough typing! Thanks for reading and commenting, and all the support! I'll see you next week!

mushroom - Now its been revealed but I have to wonder if people were expecting maybe... Jefe?

oldguy - Is that like the Mxyzptlk of Mastorism? hmmm could be!

AzuJOD - the heck with almost. I'm sad! But I need the break, and will come back even stronger!

tharisfal - I think so. :) I guess a lot of folks did!

trevor - thanks! Your award presentation reminded me that I always read TOTT but never your other comic.. I was highly entertained.

Jabali - you nailed it on the head! He knows no other way.

TKY - Thanks! Yep!

repoman - Thanks! I don't use narration too much, though you might noticed I tried to at the beginning, but it didn't feel right so I abandoned it. I guess, in a sense, this sort of bookends that concept. Because THERE MUST BE ORDER!

Ben - Yep. He's now among the ranks of Darth Vader and Iago.

wellsee - Same place you went to vote. So far lost one, and won one. Hopefully tonight I'll find out about the other one. Fun deal all around.

always - Thanks!

theends - Thanks. Hahah, i think I told you in the beginning when I saw I was up against you, i knew my goose was cooked. You have a great comic with brilliant art-- out there stuff, too... so. No surprise. Everyone nominated was brilliant. Thanks for the compliment, and maybe my inking will pay off when the b/w art award gets announced.. hmmm?

jazzcop - There you are!
