Happy Preview

Um... I got nothing.... Except an insane amount of busy. Anyhow, this is the next LARGE story I'll tackle after TBOTR ends. I'm planning on putting together a bunch under Tales of the Roerr. Remember the chick? Probably not, but that's Jacob's cousin all grown up. Anyhow, enjoy your preview or teaser or spoiler or whatever the blazes these things are called.

Taylor of "The Krae" (go check it out) drew this for me before she left for Japan. It's also from "Outriggers", so now you can look forward to this.

Will no one think of the ink?

Oh lordy, this was an intensive page. I drew part of the pencils at home, back in Alaska, and part on the plane down to Montana, which seems to be on fire. I painted the page between classes at university. A major problem was that I had termination dust at home to refernce, but none down here, so the snow might be off.

I, personally, like Eveline. She's kind of round and cute, but she presents challenges because she's not comic book woman pretty (which, by the by, I seem to be a lot better at now, but I'm not changing her design.) The change of direction of the wind is my little "time passes subtly" gimmick. I think I shall keep Tom's stubble a little longer, as it seems to be a vast improvement. Bonus points if you can spot the characters in the page, and not just at the bottom there.

(Hint - they're by the glacial erratics. It's not a giveaway, because not everyone knows what that means.)

I was highly amused by the reaction to Jacob on the last page. You know, I designed him to be kind of wierd, but I was definately not thinking heartthrob... Quite the opposite, in fact. Oh dear.

KAY?

You know, I painted this at the house of Taylor of Krae fame. I also painted the last page there. However, this page brought me to a rather unfortunate realization...

One of my major characters is curled up in the fetal position, whimpering about the chill, with a possibly infected gut wound. The sad part is how hilarious I found this. As Taylor pointed out to me, this is not a good sign. I rather like Jacob's expressions, though this page was rushed, as I promised Taylor I'd update this before she left for Japan and I left for Montana (bloody lower 48, no offense, but there are too many people...) and the magical happy university of studying rocks that were living critters.

I really like stipling Tom's stubble, I had way too much fun with the dialogue on this page. See, the thing about writing for Jacob in the last couple of pages is that he isn't the type to go "I love you, man! I'm sorry you're dying because you tried to help me, even if you didn't do too well at it." Jacob isn't a warm fuzzy type, even if Tom's his buddy. Besides, he has his scary reputation to keep.

Avar sees right through Jacob's "Rar! I'm scary!"-ness. Speaking of Jacob's scariness, there's been four versions of the sixth panel. The first was the scetch, where I tested a bunch of different lines, such as "savvy?", "got it?", "capiche?", and "Okay?" Taylor got hold of it, and adored one of the responses, so I drew one for her (Jacob looks really scary, rip your throat out in a good way). I also painted one to show everyone. This is fully adult Jacob - tattoos and earring. http://www.drunkduck.com/Thunder_Roarer/gfx/kayheart.jpg

When next I update, I'll be back in university, fighting the evils of mineralogy and physics. Hey! I actually get classes about rocks this semester!

... If you're still reading, would you like to know something pathetic? I tried so hard to not do any backgrounds on this page. I couldn't. Seriously, I'm starting to wonder if I can do a page without a spruce tree and/or mountain that's not on a ship.

Good Morning

Ahem... I got nothing. No, really, I think I've lost my magical type something funny and make you read all of it mojo. I'll just say that I love some of Tom's expressions.

You know what I wish drunkduck had? I wish I could see all the comics that had updated today. See, I love puttering around and finding new comics, but having 3000 to browse through is scary, especially since some of them are defunct.

Here's something to ask you guys - speech bubbles... Are they a good idea or should I drop them? Also, I now have a better idea of what everyone thinks of Tom. How about Avar?

ZOMGWTF... Tom has Stubble.

Sorry, chicillos, but this is going to be long.

- Firstly, MAJOR love to anyone with the patience to not yell at me after my prolonged absence. Also, major love to the new readers, and bonus major love to Jenshin and her swifty Thunder art. Go back a page and admire its coolness. I'm done with calculus and chemistry, and plan better time management in the future, so as to keep such delays from occuring.

- Secondly, I tried speech bubbles. Meh. However, I love the faces in the second and third panel. Taylor (of the Krae) believes Avar's face in the fifth panel is good; I'm not so sure.

- Thirdly, go to The Krae (http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Krae/), because the Krae artist and I swore a blood oath to update today... Okay, not really, but we should both be updating. No blood was exchanged, but we had popcorn from the same bowl, which probably counts as some kind of oath. ANyhow, she's really good and doesn't get all the love she deserves. This next page is hilarious. Go see her. Also, while you're on the humor circut, visit http://www,drunkduck.com/Gnoph/, where JillyFoo has just helped Mina_Lunga by filling in the blanks with her lovely madness. JillyFoo's homebase is http://www.drunkduck/The_Planet_Closest_To_Heaven/.

- This brings us to my fourth and final topic. During my mysterious absence, Tom was kidnapped by Mina_Lunga for said crossover joy. Tom wound up in a bleeding heap. Tom didn't get any licks in in JillyFoo's version, either. Of course, here at TBOTR, he has a possibly infected gut wound. In fact, let's review the sterling career of Mr. Nearford.

1.Tom steals Jacob's horse while Jacob beats the blazes out of his buddies. Some guy grazes Jake's face while Tom distracts him. Jacob beats up that guy. Even mounted, Tom he manages is to make Jacob slip on a rock and twist his ankle. Not sprain, even. Jacob tackles Tom, intimidates him, and uses him as a crutch.

2. Jacob scares the blazes out of Tom with a sword and the threat of torture. Tom cracks like a CD case under the tire of a Hummer. Tom whines to himself.

3. Tom spends time being scared by Jacob. He does not attempt escape. He does not tell Jacob to push off.

4. Tom rushes back to help Jacob in the ambush, swords one guy in the neck (his finest moment), then gets slashed across the stomach immediately. Tom falls off his horse. Jacob carries Tom and dumps him with a poisoned horse (I love Jake's tail), then stabs and slashes the remaining chaps. Tom's interference may or may not have helped Jacob.

5. Jacob and Tom undergo some buddy bonding. So do Tom and Eveline. Of course, throughout, Tom's lying there.

Now, I used to hate Tom. The rest of this story was planned. Tom was not. Tom was a surprise, and he didn't belong. I wanted to kill him off so badly. Then, the Krae girls convinced me to let him live a little longer (read, beyond Avar's arrival in the story), and I found out he was actually useful, storywise. Now, Tom's grown on me. There's a lot of reasons, but it can be summed up as such: My poor Tom. He tries so hard, yet accomplishes so very little. It seems that Tom cannot win. In some ways this amuses me, but nowadays I have a soft spot for my pansy guardsman. My poor, poor, inept, possibly dying Tom.

Moreso, because Tom's pushing his way in to my orderly universe left him with a really scary/cool father who you will all meet soon. He has stubble, too. (Tom just forgot to shave. For the curious, nearly everyone in my psuedomedievalistic world has ankle daggers. Did I show Jacob's once? ... I forget. Anyhow, Tom's been shaving with his, but his gut wound distracted him today.) Tom's father is stubble-icious. I'll explain that to someone besides the Krae girls when Tom's scary daddy shows up.

Note my crafty use of internet slang in the title.
