Happy Turkey Day!

What better way to give thanks for what we've got than to stuff ourselves with more than we have any business thinking about? Yeah, that's an American tradition for you.

Speaking of which, I guess it's a bit odd that I chose to represent Thanksgiving via the Macy's Parade rather than the big meal that's the traditional centerpiece. This just struck me as funnier somehow. Maybe I just wanted to draw Avatar's goofy pajamas again, I dunno.

Anyway, Friday's page will still be going up as scheduled, so tune in again tomorrow for that. And have a happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Page 206: You know, if there's time

This page kind of worried me. On the one hand, I couldn't get it done before Anime USA, meaning that I had to pound it out while still trying to recover from the con. More importantly, though, I REALLY liked the rough draft and was afraid that the final version wouldn't turn out as good. Thankfully, this one turned out even BETTER than the rough. I simply ADORE Layla in this page. The expressions were a delight to draw, and I love playing around with her personality like this. She's been such a grouch since everything went icky that it would have been out of character if she didn't mock the very notion of a bunch of kids trying to save the day. Yet, at the same time, it would have been out of character for her to let Trigger go without saying SOMETHING nice. I think the result is the neatest interaction the two have had in a while.

But enough fawning over my own stuff, there's some news to cover. If all goes well, there's going to be another special, holiday bonus page this Thursday. I say "if" because I've also got a big giant update on Conventional Wisdom to do before the week is out (Oh yeah, check that out, please!)AND I need to draw up rough drafts of the next few weeks of THIS comic. Well, just keep tuning in to see what's up, 'kay? Cool.

Page 205: I'm getting too old for this sort of thing.

As I write this, it is after 3 am, Tuesday morning. I just finished scrambling to complete Friday's page and get it online so that I could finish all my OTHER preparations for Anime USA. As you READ this, I'm either on my way or already up there. In fact, you MIGHT be reading this specifically because I tricked you into it at the con this weekend! If so... I apologize sincerely.

Oh, and on a totally random note, that "sack of coal" bit Ichabod mentions is inspired by Norm Macdonald's bizarre, rambling appearance on Late Night a few months ago. See if you can find his joke about the Moth & the Pediatrist on the web somewhere. It's astounding.

Page 204: Shut up, I'm being supportive!

Okay, folks, here's the deal. I'd love to comment on what an unsubtle way this is of re-introducing Avatar, gush on how awesome the zombie kids are, complain about how long the plot is taking right now, and so on, but I just don't have time. Anime USA is breathing down my back, I've still gotta finish Friday's page AND a small mountain of handouts (not to mention working on costumes and packing and stuff) and... uh... yeah...

...gosh, the convention isn't even for a few days, and I'm already sleep deprived and brain-fried...

Page 203: Backronyms are stupid

You'd be surprised just how few words there are that the letters A V A T A and R can stand for. Rest assured we won't won't be hearing this long version of Avatar's name very often.

Speaking of whom, I'm surprised at how out of practice I've gotten at drawing Avatar since she last showed up. I mean, the LAST page went fine, but I had a lot of trouble remembering how to draw her in profile here.

Oh, and not to gush about the zombie kids AGAIN, but get a load of that look Alphonse gives Avatar when Tabitha hugs her! I was honestly surprised at how different he looks with an expression other than timid fear. You'd think I'd know these characters pretty well by now, but they still find ways of surprising me.
