The last page of our Tsunami story.

Not sure what's next. I've focused more on writing in the last few years instead of drawing. We'll see what I can scrounge up... or maybe I'll actually draw something new.

I have to give credit to Fred for a lot of this page. I scripted it, but for the panel descriptions I just said something like, "Some kind of image that conveys the historical event I mention." It was Fred who decided to go the completely symbolic route by having images appear reflected in the ripples of the water.

We worked a little differently on this story than usual. I wrote a full script and left the whole layout/storytelling thing to Fred while I did my usual inking thing. I gave some panel descriptions (things like "I want a close-up here), but most of this was Fred's doing. The great rippled water transition here is all his.

While not made explicit in this story (because it's not really necessary info for this), is that the main character here is Wren, a character from my published novel. This story takes place a few years after the events of "King of Summer" and the drowning she refers to here is a reference to events in the book.

Some time after the 2004 tsunami that devastated communities along the coastline of the Indian Ocean a friend (Marcel Walker), asked several local artists if we would contribute a story for an anthology comic, the proceeds of which were to go to tsunami relief efforts. All he asked was for us to address our own reactions to the tsunami in whatever way we saw fit. Sadly, due to a number of complicating factors the project never saw the light of day. However a number of really good stories were produced.

This is the one Fred and I came up with. This marked Fred's return to comics storytelling after a long absence, and was the first collaboration we had done in ten years. I'm pretty happy with the results. This is a four-pager, and unlike my last post, this one is a finished product.

Unfinished Story page 4

The shadow monkeys and the scary harlequin ghost guy are images that appeared to me in dreams many years ago (different dreams, thankfully). These four pages served as a prologue. If I remember correctly the next page started sixteen years later. Some elements of this will probably appear in some future project. I hope.

Next week, page one of a four page story that is actually finished!
