Hey, they're the most powerful company in the world! They're supposed to protect themselves!

You know, the world was only slightly different before the financial crisis. Sure, for the average joe it's way more difficult to find a job. But to me it seems my generation was conditioned from the get-go to believe that getting a job would (a) be hard to do and that (b) there was no hope of holding on to one job for too long. This generation is expected to surrender everything - family, home, personal interests - in favor of the job. I started working on A.D 1997 way back in 2000, and even Bombshell, my decidedly more paramilitaristic take on the anti-corporate Zeitgeist, was launched some months before people started using the term "financial crisis" to describe the present developments.

This may just be a long-winded way of telling you: Hey folks, I told ya so. If you'd only listened to me. But hey, if you're reading this, then I guess you're the wrong person to complain to! So, thanks for reading :P

(Weekly updates don't seem to work out very well these days... sorry!)

P.S.: Fun fact: Polyphemus first appeared on ep. 2, page 7.

REPLIES:

DAJB: Heh, watch it! Calling her a "thing" that's "happening" might set her off... ;-P

Nepath & trevoramueller: Thanks!

DryBonez: Haha... who would expect lava or the Great Gatsby to come save them? :P Anyway - Thanks a lot!

I would usually draw lots and lots of splintering glass, but alas, I was tired and lazy and still have a paper to write and a presentation to, um, present.

And in case I haven't mentioned it before (I could look it up to make sure, but: tired/lazy...), the name Lowry hails from one of my favorite movies, "Brazil" by Terry Gilliam.

Thanks for reading & commenting!

P.S.: See my spiffy robot costume? :P

P.S.P.S.: The filler from last week is still there, I just moved it back a few pages.

trevoramueller: Thanks!

DAJB: Maybe he had to endure worse to get the job... :-)

REPLIES:

Nepath & trevoramueller: Thanks!

DAJB: Can't have Naomi on every page or she might ask for a raise! :P

JNP: As usual, you're right on all accounts! I won't defend this choice of colors here on an aesthetic level (which would include my finding it not toooooo bad, and it's got its value as an experiment and yadda yadda). Rather I'll just say that putting out one color page a week is something I've never done before, and there's bound to be some casualties, especially since my semester started last Monday! ^^;

I don't think I've ever used as highly saturated colors before... I'm trying to stylize my coloring just as much as my lineart, trying to find a recognizable style for this comic. For a pretty long time, A.D 1997 was done without any stylistic considerations. It's just when I started a "superhero comic" that I consciously considered changing my style... now I'll try to find an individual style for all of my comics.

Also, "Hades" is the greek version of Pluto (or vice-versa: Pluto is the Roman version of Hades), the God of the Underworld. It's a little in-joke about Naoki Urasawa's manga "Pluto" (which in turn is based on Osamu Tezuka's "Tetsuwan Atom" aka "Astro Boy" - I really can't recommend Urasawa's work enough). Yup, Tezuka's/Urasawa's Pluto is a robot.

Thanks a lot for reading & commenting!

REPLIES:

Nepath & trevoramueller: Thanks!

JNP: That makes sense :P I rarely use lens flare, so when I do there'll have to be a really good reason :D

DAJB: Well, thanks for stopping by! :P
