129: Torso-Thrashing Riffs

Hey, guys! Sorry it's been so long-- I've been crazy busy. This page was fun to color, though-- I really love doing the Glittar effects, despite the extra effort involved. ...Oh, you didn't know the Glittar could shoot bolts of pure rock energy from its guitar neck? Well, now you do. The Glittar is that glorious. And you know what else is glorious?

In the dark days following the ignominous birth of the third millenium, the planet Earth was swathed in a gloomy, wraithlike shroud of decay. Violence, greed, and ignorance prevailed throughout the land, while values such as truth and beauty lay withered and dying from sheer neglect. As people all across the globe sunk further and further into numb oblivion, there seemed to be no hope anywhere, no inspiration to be found.

That is, until one day.

One day in February of 2008, when, charging forth upon the barren, grassy pampas of the Internet, came nine extraordinary men. Nine webcomic artists turned pioneers. Nine champions for a dying species. These fine gentlemen, these mighty colossi of their age, would be known and revered for innumerable eons hence as...

THE SCIENTEERS.

Yes, the Scienteers webcomic collective is up! Comprised of nine comic artists, every single one of whom have insanely awesome skills (and I'm not just saying that-- they do, trust me), the Scienteers collective hopes to set a new example for the future of webcomics. They've also got comics news, heaps of promotion and advertising opportunities coming up, and (coming soon) an original webcomic series co-written by the collective members. And did I mention that yours truly is one of them??? Well, I am. Check out the site today-- I guarantee it will rock your ass out of the top of your head and back into your seat. (Also, if you have any news you'd like to announce, email us at thescienteers@gmail.com.

In conclusion... The Polyphonic Spree's cover of Nirvana's "Lithium", as sung by sock puppets. If that doesn't win you over right there, I don't know what will.

Sincerely,
Ian Jay

128: Reunion

Hey guys! I gotta make this quick-- I have a dinner date in like five minutes.

I've been really busy with a number of projects recently, including a play (Steve Martin's "WASP"-- I'm playing the dad), my radio show, homework, various other projects, and of course just generally goofing off with friends whenever I have the time. The weather here's been fairly colder and rainier than last semester, but whatever. Overall, I'm having a good time.

As you may have noticed, acute readers, the address "teocomic.com" now links to the DD page, not the SS page. This is mainly due to technical issues with SS's FTP server. I'm a little bummed out that TEO has to end on the mirror site, but not that bummed out; after all, it could be seen as rather cyclical, poetic even, to have TEO end on the very same amateur webpage it started on. (And we're so close to the end of Book Two! It's crazy!) ...Anyways, you guys are still free to comment and e-mail me and stuff. Just do it on here instead of over there. And let me know how this works out for you.

In conclusion... I dunno... maybe some Tuvan throat singing. I'm like crazy for this shit right now. Can't explain why. I just am. I wish I knew how to do it myself.

Sincerely,

127: Love Is In The Air

It's strange-- the universe seems to be collapsing in on itself to prevent me from finishing TEO. I had trouble finding a Mac copy of Adobe Photoshop, to start with-- I tried downloading Corel Painter 9 for free from the SCAD site, but working with that program is like drawing with my hand sewn on backwards, I'm sorry. And then I had to figure out my new Wacom tablet, which is miles away from how my old tablet laptop used to function (I'm still so amazed by how the line width varies depending on how hard you press down. Technology is just blowing my mind here). Then, of all things that could go wrong, I got this crazy painful stomach pain thing yesterday, and the subsequent (somewhat frightening) trip to the medical center ate up an afternoon that I would've otherwise used to finish TEO. And now it appears that I can't connect to TEO's FTP server, meaning I can't upload a comic on my main TEO site. Wonderful. Peachy. Hooray.

The upshot of all this is, of course, is that you DD folks will be seeing this page before anyone who regularly checks the main page does. Even though it's late. Bear with me, people.

Anyways, I'm back at college now, and things couldn't be better. Hanging out with old friends, working on projects, getting back into clubs... hell, I could live like this all the time if it weren't for the dang classes (and all those ridiculous art supplies). However, as I've stated before, I won't be leaving TEO to die like last semester. I've got something very big in the works, and I don't want to screw up and blow the whole deal to pieces before then.

In conclusion... the music video to Menomena's single "Evil Bee". I've been a fan of Menomena for a good while, but I hadn't seen their music video for this song until now. Between the vomiting bees, oppressive tank-birds, and the overarcing theme of dreams as escape against mechanistic conformity, it is a stunner, let me tell you.

See you next week, kids!

Sincerely,

126: Bright Lights, Indistinct Sounds

Hey there, TEO fans! I'm typing this on my well-worn Acer TravelMate tablet laptop (replete with replacement plug-in keyboard, bought after the one on the actual laptopstopped working, and the power cord that the wireless internet cannot function without, making the whole point of "wireless internet" moot. I told you about this computer before, didn't I?), but it's probably the last time I'll ever type on it as my own. I recently acquired a much-needed new MacBook Pro (plus a Wacom tablet, of course), and I hope to have it set up and coloring TEO pages by next week. Owning a Mac after using PCs for years and years is a new and surprisingly creepy experience to me; it's a bit like moving into a stranger's house. I keep expecting to have the real owner jump out and say, "Hey, give that back!" Like I'm just borrowing it or something. Still, it's an amazingly nice computer (I had no idea laptops could ever be this, well, portable), and I look forward to driving the wheels off of it in the college years to come. Now if I could only find someone at SCAD with a pirate OS X copy of CS3...

I had a good day today, all things considered. Went to a movie with my mom-- "Juno", a movie about a pregnant teenager that tries rather hard to come off as indie at points, but on the whole is surprisingly heartfelt and realistic (while being hip and snarky enough to counterbalance critics' use of words such as "heartfelt and realistic" to describe it, words much better suited for Hallmark TV specials). Afterwards, we stopped in Borders, and I finally bought the Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs, which I've been listening to while coloring this page. (Some of the songs are sort of hit and miss on their own, but cumulatively it's a great album that showcases a whole spectrum of human emotions and musical styles while still sticking to a single overarcing theme-- namely, love, in all its freakish forms. An essential desert-island album, if not for its dense size then certainly for its range.) A vending machine next to the parking garage ate my dollar bill, and I bought a Blue Raspberry Wawa-brand soda on the way home that tasted like melted-down Dum-Dums, but on the whole the day was a net gain. One good last day of winter break before I head back to SCAD, I guess.

Also! Just to clear things up beforehand: I won't be stopping production of TEO once I get back to college like I did last quarter. This is mainly for two reasons:

a) I don't have another large break coming up until May, and
b) I'm just too freaking close to the end of TEO2 that I can't stop now.

Besides, I'll be working on a number of other comic projects anyways, on and offline. There are one or two coming up that I'm particularly excited about, so keep an eye on... er... well, on me, I guess.

That's all for this week. News posting on SS still seems to be disabled, so this is another DD exclusive post until we get that site back up and running. In conclusion... Tarbox Road Recording Studios. Ask for Michael "Aahhouudnuuhtz" Ivins!

Keep on rockin' in the free world, y'alls.

Sincerely,
