Chapter 2: Page 23

I don't like the speedlines in the first panel. There's too many of them. The thing is I have a limited selection of speedlines. Kinda sucks. So it looks not so good. I'm skeptical about doing it myself, because if you do it on the computer, you can always click "undo." It's a lot harder to correct if you do it in ink... Maybe I should consider investing some money in some tones to scan. Or maybe just draw some shit, scan it in and use it like I would a tone.

I did some manga studying, and found that in most of the panels, unless it's dark or dramatic, a lot of the actual shadows aren't done in tone. So not having to do that shaved off a lot of time. w00t. Good find.

I don't like how Fuji turned out in the second panel. He's, like, all excited, then totally not, and then in the next panel, he totally is again. And it's kinda awkward. I don't think people act like that, unless they're schizoid, or something. Which Fuji isn't. Next to him is Ai, by the way. I don't know what a geeky-looking guy is doing sitting next to such a hot, stylish girl. Maybe he's up to date on celebs and fashion, or something. I wasn't planning on really writing about them, so I just let it go.

(Her bag of chips says "Crispy" in Japanese-trying-to-be-English, which makes is "Kurisupii." Sounds roughly the same. Still written in Japanese characters.)

I like Fuji's hand in the third panel. Mmm... Acutally, I do and I don't. I like how the hand looks, but I think it's angled poorly. But gimmie a break. I mean, hands are terribly difficult to draw in the first place. To draw it at a different angle? Not happening for me anytime soon.

I like the fourth panel. I'd like it even more if Ai weren't blocking some of the students. I couldn't draw the other students without making it look awkward. But then, I couldn't not draw them without making it look awkward. I just ended up not drawing them. Oh well... But as for the proportions and angle of things, I think it's pretty good. I had a hard time rendering the effect of people actually having faces and expressions, but not being particularly important. But ultimately (after trying 50 different things, which actually took up a good chunk of time) I'm happy with the result. I think the fourth one is my favourite panel.

But in terms of the paneling itself, I don't really care for it. It's a little awkward. And while it still flows, it's still kinda strange. Maybe that's just me out of my comfort zone talking. I mean, I realize that in terms of a manga, so far, the panels have been terribly linear. And not that that's a bad thing, but it's so... non-dramatic. I don't know what I want. XD

New manga in Shojo Beat! Not saying that you have to subscribe or anything... Well, first, I wanna go off on how they abruptly stopped running Nana in the middle of the story. I mean, they announced it, and I thought that was the final chapter. But no. I they're just not running it. If I had fucking known that, I woulda just bought all the graphic novels in between. Bastards. >.>;; They claim that it's too "adult" for the magazine. I mean, it's already rated Older Teen... I dunno. I've always thought that maturity ratings have always underestimated the minds and experiences of children and teens. Then again, I do know that there's always gonna be that one parent who's all fucking medlesome, and getting into their kid's shit, when they really don't need to. I mean, God forbid anyone should see a naked body! It's so dirty and grotesque and unnatural! >.>;; Anyway, now that I'm done with that spiel, I have to mention the new manga I was talking about. Honey and Clover. I'm not saying you all have to sell your soul to Shojo Beat. I just wanted to recommend it when it comes out in graphic novel form, to all you shoujo manga lovers. It's so cute and sweet! ^^ And it's kinda not like anything else. At least that I've read. I'm so sick of reading all those shoujo manga that seem to follow a pattern. Dramatic opening page that you don't know what it means; Flighty, ditzy or pissy girl meets boy; she either likes him, or hates him while secretly liking him; shit happens, and everything happens around the girl; characters are introduced; somehow that first page is tied in, and gives an excuse for a title, when neither the first page, the whole tying in of the first page nor the title of the story really make sense or are relevant to the story; boy and girl end up together; everyone's all happy and shit. (This coming from someone who completely ripped off her manga story XD) I like that most of the main characters are guys, because already, it's broken this pattern. I guess I can't speak for the whole series or anything, but I've read 2 chapters, and already, I love it. ^^ So it might be something you wanna check out. ^^ Unfortunately, I don't know the release date, but I'm sure it'll be by at least December of this year.

Chapter 2: Page 22

Oh yeah... right... the whole being related thing. Oh, Misae. You're so smart. Why do you say something so stupid? XD

I was kinda bored, doing this one. I decided that I really, really hate drawing things. Things are bad. They're difficult. *fetal positionateses*

I don't really have a lot to say... Halfway through toning this one, I stopped for 2 hours to watch Top Model. By the way, I love Top Model. It's excellent, and great, and awesomness.

I dunno.... I just feel like I was really bored doing this one... I guess more accurately, I could say I was zombieish. If I was bored, I probably woulda left. But I just pressed through... I dunno... it's not that great a page. It's pretty mediocre. *shrug* Better luck next time.

Chapter 2: Page 21

"I Remember You" YUI

Ooh, we learn the date! That's not really important. lol I know, it's not 2005 anymore. I needed the start of the story to be in the fall. And I feel kinda creepy writing about stuff in the future... Less it's a futuristic story, and it's far, far into the future. Like, hundreds of years. So, yeah. Right now, it's 2005.

You like my "S" Hooks? I don't. They look weird. Well, the one on the left it okay, I guess. The one on the right is fat. :P Oh yeah, that's the 1-C class's homeroom teacher, Mr. Yamada... He's in his 40's.

Hmm... maybe I should explain something. In Japanese secondary schools, the teachers change classes, and the students stay in one class. So, the classes are labeled by numbers and/or letters. If you think about it, it's a more useful way of doing things. You don't get people crowded and cramped trying to walk through the halls. People get to know each other much better, making things more comfortable. You can be identified by your class, for organization purposes... Anywho...

*shudders* I think I'm sickened by how closely this follow Marmalade Boy. ;_; Oh well. This is just practice. I'm saving the good stuff for when I get better! And anyway, I think it kinda diverges after the first half of the first graphic novel. Or something like that.

The room is so plain... I'll have to study Japanese classrooms. Rawr. I hate drawing inanimate objects. They're so difficult. With all their angles and their proportions and their... inanimateness... I gotta keep trying!

Oh yeah, and I tried something new with the page layout. I got rid of the border around it. It's a bitch to do (especially since my scanner never scans straight) but I think it looks better. And it makes the image bigger, so I have more to work with. Not by a lot. Maybe by... 50 px? Still...

Chapter 2: Page 20

"Can You Feel The Love Tonight" (German)

|D I thought of a new technique for toning. So this took good chunk out of the production time. Erm, that is, it would've, were I not glued to youtube the entire time. XD Now that I have a computer that doesn't shit every two seconds, I can actually use youtube. XD

Anyway... This page is very background-phobic... I think I kinda rushed this one. Bad. I wanted to have four pages inked by the end of this week. I accomplished this, but they are of very poor quality. ;_; I got sick of my technique for drawing black hair. So I just outlined it, then toned it very dark. I'll probably be doing this for Misae as well.

I really like that star background, don't I? XD I think I need more tones. ;_;

I don't really have a lot to say. I'm not particularly in a talkative mood... Probably because I haven't really done anything all week, or something. Well, I've been studying up my manga. There's a ton to it. By the by, those How to Draw Manga books? Don't do shit. They teach you how to draw pictures, not manga. So, basically, I just figured out that I'm sorting all my techniques and whatnot out by myself. Maybe when this is over, I'll write my own how to draw manga book, and whup all their asses.
CG of Ameko

*sigh* Okay. Time just escaped me this week. Before I knew it, it was Friday. I couldn't slap a comic together in two days. I mean, I could, but it wouldn't be as good a quality. I couldn't believe where the time went. I've got a lot of different art projects queued up at the moment. The comics got a little pushed to the side. On top of that, Audrey and I are in an agility class, so training her has taken up a chunk of time, as well.

Here's a sample of what I've been working on, though. I actually drew someone in stylish clothes! How uncharacteristic of me! XD So, um, forgive me?
