2-23: French Toast

As you no doubt have noticed - if you've been reading all along - the development of this strip is as much about wander style as it is about storyline. Recent editions have been all about coverage and conversation, and there are times when I really enjoy doing this, stretching my limitations as an illustrator. In case it's not clear, I tried to emphasize that they're not all that cozy yet by making the couch seem impossibly long and putting a great deal of distance between them. Hence, this drunken conversation. As Barney Gumble once put it, "Sweet, beautiful drunk-talk."

I'll never be a master of verisimilitude, but I can at least try to improve my staging, angles, facial impressions and body language.

2-22: Wallflower

Naturally, I had to show that there were more people at this party than just Rodriguez. That just would've been creepy.

I like this page. As far as my own abilities go, I like the work that I put into it, because it involves establishing shots and atmosphere and stuff. I like the partygoers interacting with each other, many of whom are vague resemblances of people I know. I was going to have a sountrack, possibly Katy Perry, but I realized that it'd be weird with the guitar guy in there. there's always that guy who brings his guitar to parties, love him or hate him.

The beginning of this chapter was on a couch, and now the end of it is too, as Chapter 2 winds down with the party scene. Chapter 3 will pick up and complete this thread, but with a slightly altered focus.

2-21: Can't you hear me knocking?

Ever been called "pal" by somebody who was not your pal?

This is kind of a perfunctory RG strip and I'm not pleased that I've left it in, but I did it and it's done. Hopefully everyone gets it and I don't have to like, underline that the plot of this story is not unlike the plot of Superbad. He's at a party being hosted by his current enemy, Rodriguez, and his peace offering is this ill-gotten booze. My desire not to be "bash-your-head-in obvious" occasionally leads me to be rather difficultly vague and it's hard to know how to walk the line. A tough call for any storyteller.

There are two types of people out there. Those who say "par-tay" to be ironic, and those who say it because they seriously think it earns them cool points. Rodriguez is a man running low on cool points, but his douchiness seems to have won him fear from his classmates. Plus, dude's like 19.

(Oddly enough, I might point out, it's legal to buy beer in Canada at 19... one of the geographic vagaries of my setting. If they are Canadian, then Rodriguez at least appreciates the effort.)

Before the day of this strip, I intend to rectify the situation by completing the next few while I have time. Hopefully you'll see the new page within a few days. Cheers.
