Fan Art From SlideStudios

SlideStudios made this amazing fan art of Sapphira after I was the first to correctly guess a movie quote question over at his hilarious and recently featured webcomic, Cubicles.

My apologies for the delay on Due East. My father-in-law has been in the hospital and very ill for the last week. He's just been released from ICU and is doing much better, but art has had to take a backseat to family, of course.

The next page is scripted (actually, the next 4 or 5 pages are scripted) and Lord willing, I hope to get back to art ASAP! Thanks to everyone for your continued patience. It will be rewarded!

Due East Book 5 Page 4

September 21, 2009 Update: Just to let you know, Angel and I have been working on a new scene involving Phira and other characters. Several pages coming soon! I'll keep you updated but my apologies for the slight delay.

Original blurb: So here we go -- a new cast member: Brenden Kavanaugh! He's going to become very important to the story surprisingly soon (and no, he's not a stalker who's going to kill one of the main characters or something predictable like that). As you can see, he's a fairly orderly fellow, a more-than-competent network administrator for Gzelle Enterprises. Oh, and if you couldn't tell, he doesn't like to cook. (Oh, and about the chili in the last frame, keep in mind: Due East's storyline started in 2003, so at most, it's early 2004).

An interesting fact: The character in the poster above Brenden's bed is a character for a fictional MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). The character and the game, which will debut within Due East and play a minor role in this story, were designed by my oldest son, Adam, as a favor to me and Angel. He agreed and designed the game and all characters within 2 hours!

We wanted to include him in the webcomic-making process. Sometime soon, I'll scan his original drawings for this and put them in Behind The Scenes of Due East.

Due East Book 5 Page 3

Welcome back! As promised, we're doing things in pencil again.

Don't recognize the surroundings yet? Wonder if this is the same webcomic? It's okay, this is still Due East!

We're just taking you somewhere new...

By the way, it was a fun challenge drawing "Maxie the Cat."

Last Filler: Epiphany!

Yesterday I really did have an epiphany! I was asking myself why I've had a problem moving forward with new pages of Due East for nearly seven months now...and finally, it all clicked: artistically, I'm happiest -- and most myself -- when I'm penciling! As much as I enjoy an inked and fully colored page of art, Due East needs to reflect all I can put into my pencils.

I want to thank JustNoPoint for his support as colorist and friend. JNP, I want you to know how deeply I appreciate your offer to color this whole issue.

You see, folks, this collaboration was supposed to help us crank out more pages of DE. But unfortunately, the opposite happened. Well, JNP held up his end of the deal. I just couldn't figure out -- until now -- why I'd had so much trouble holding up mine. But now I know.

I want to look forward from this point, however. I've talked with my wife about this and she's agreed. So, for the rest of this book and probably from now on, I'm going to draw the best finished pencils I'm capable of, with the help of the Lord.

I've half-sketched the next page and over the next few days, I should be able to finish the pencils, scan and letter it. I have more pages scripted, plus Angel and I have inspiration for the next several scenes.

I want to express our thanks to all of you -- our incredible readers -- for your support and love of Due East, for waiting patiently and for your kind words and sentiments. It is deeply rewarding to have your friendship and presence in commenting.

Interlude: DE Father's Day Present -- Sapphira!

My apologies for the long delay but believe me, we have some amazing stuff in the works! The pages are written and now we just need to draw them out.

In the meantime, however, I wanted to share what my wife, Angel, made for me for Father's Day this year: a clay statue of Sapphira based on a frame from Page 11 of Due East Book 1. I think she did an incredible job, with tremendous detail.

I am so honored, I can't even express it properly but I wanted to share it with all of you. Enjoy!
