TUSL Chapter 05, Page 19

This is one of those scenes where I kind of wish I could have had room to expand it a bit more, yet at the same time maybe it more effective that it isn't.

I could have made this bigger, had more time to have Nemesio and Aiyana react to Aminta, but a lot of the later plot is more powerful because this is both a missed chance and full of unanswered questions for both Nemesio and Aminta.

I like that Nemesio here speaks in his native language here. It's something that he's not suppose to do while around humans and ra'th. So that's a good indication of how shocked he is.

Also really love Aiyana's line at the end. That response is just so her.

TUSL Chapter 05, Page 18

So ends West and Quinn's conversation. I really enjoyed the dialog between the two of them. It was a lot of fun to write.

And as I say that it's interesting to think of the contrasts between Nemesio and West when it comes to relationships between them and Quinn. Both are best friend material. Although West is more cynical while Nemesio is more reserved.

But also there is a distant that Nemesio has from everyone. From Quinn and even Aiyana too. So we don't get this kind of play in dialog between the two of them. Which is more because of how Nemesio is than a reflection of the relationship between Quinn and Nemesio.

Anyway, that's all we will see of West for now, though he is really a fun character and he has a fun background. Maybe I will have to have short story with him or something. :)

TUSL Chapter 05, Page 17

West and Quinn's conversation continues on and we learn a bit more about Wreth and his goals from an outsider's perspective. This massive raid upon the ra'th has been only another piece of a game long played by Wreth.

From the earlier scene with Wreth and co, we know that they have this goal of rebuilding Maldori. But now we know that the raid was only done after having tried to start a legal trade through normal petition.

One of those little details that is hard to explain in the limited word count of that comic is that while no, ra'th slavery is not illegal, it also isn't a recognized trade. This is really more a minor political detail, but without it being a recognized trade, there is no guild setup for it and no support from the government for it.

Wreth tried to get it recognized once already, but failed to be able to overcome a social taboo about enslavement. So this raid is also about proving through a large scale example that ra'th slavery should be a recognized, beneficial public trade.

So the stakes for Quinn and Aiyana have suddenly gone up, a lot. Now it is no longer about just saving Aiyana's tribe. Now it is about preventing all the future raids too. If Aiyana's tribe is not freed, Wreth will have his proof and the coin to push it all through the Senate. In a year's time ra'th slavery will be a supported public trade, and Maldori will forever be changed by it.

Chapter 05, Page 16

So we finally see West again. It's been a little while for him since the last time we saw him was all the way back on here on Chapter Two, Page Three. Yep, that's West down on the bottom left corner, on the cot, with the bandage over his eyes and the other wounds.

West and Quinn were pretty young then (12 if remember right), and I will eventually get to tell that tale. But for now, all we need to know is that West and Quinn are old friends, both who got bloodied together in the war.

So like Quinn, West is also a King's Messenger. And its really kind of interesting because this scene was not in an earlier draft this script. In fact it is one of those scenes that I added with the last revision before final.

And in retrospect, the story would have been very lacking if I hadn't added it in. Because we would have never seen how Quinn got this big piece of the puzzle. The confirmation that it was Wreth behind the raid.

Whatever it was that made me reexamine it, I'm glad I did. As this is pretty much the closing to the first half of Tears Under StarLight, and it adds a nice feeling that we have answered our major question of "Who" committed the raid. Starting with chapter six the question will very quickly become, what are we going to do about it?

Poor Nemesio. All that time to build up to his big layout to Aiyana about trying to help her finally connect with Quinn...and he gets interrupted by Aminta.

And wow, I Just love Aminta here. She's an absolute terror. A natural mage who could paste almost anyone else alive. And she's a total social klutz.

Credit is really due to Sarah for this rendering of Aminta. My script to her just has Aminta "shifts her weight back and forth from one foot to the other. She's a bit socially inept." From that Sarah managed to come up with this panel. The folded hands are great, and we can just see how Aminta's cheeks are red with self-consciousness.

Then in panel three, the eyebrow Nemesio, oh that's so great. lol. I just love that. You almost have to feel sorry for Nemesio. He just went through all this trouble not long ago to explain how great this spell of his was, how it was an illusion that would make everyone see them as humans...and the first person they talk to sees right through it.

I imagine that that would have really disflated Nemesio's ego if it wasn't for the fact that no one has ever seen through the illusion before in all the years he has used it. Which when he manages to get over the shock, well that will likely seem pretty scary.
