Plot Summaries

Kit and Kokiro Kokiro: a time machine originating from a mysterious project in Nia. Besides transporting itself and a possibly unlimited number of objects or people across both time (which can result in an older Kokiro running into a younger one) and space (via "poofing"), Kokiro can also mold its gooey "body" into assorted shapes and forms. Because of this, Kokiro is not only labeled as a time machine but also a shapeshifter. Its power is limited by its need for a primary commander (or "Special Person"), and though it needn't necessarily obey this person at all times it feels an innate need to please him, her, or it--possibly because this person is so necessary for its proper functioning. Its most-used form changes in phases.

Kit "Jitai" Farren: a jitai, from Ui. Kit is one of many jitai who engage in an admittedly bizarre form of protest against their species' treatment in the fallout of the human/jitain war by forgoing their individual names among non-jitains. This could be to emphasize and attack the way many humans (and Kujians) took to viewing jitai as property (and worse) after The Great Bombings--or it could simply be to confuse records and help keep the remains of their royal family from further persecution. After a very short and stressful childhood (including but not limited to the death of his mother, his ascension to a throne he didn't know what to do with, and being buried in responsibility both in anxious prewar times and postwar slavery), Kit became irreversibly entwined with Kokiro, whose presence is connected to Kit's ill health and who constantly reaffirms his quiet and cynical disbelief in his own sanity. In many ways, being Kokiro's Special Person is truly unfortunate.

A
Kit and Kokiro Angellene: a nian, from Nia. She is quite apparently the most intelligent member of the Jackers organization. She enjoys smoking, subterfuge, and explosions.

B
Kit and Kokiro Bek, Charles: a human, from Ui. Charles is the mayor of Coyote, a small town surrounded mainly by forest. Lia Bek is his adopted daughter.
Kit and Kokiro Bek, Jack: a human, from Earth. Jack is one of the first on the scene of the "alien invasion" and becomes the more brusque, legally-minded half of a *Very* Foreign Affairs (or VFA) team.
Kit and Kokiro Bek, Lia: from Ui. She appears human, though no one has thought to ask what the jitain gem around her neck is for. Lia comes off as kind of an airhead, and can be very childish and naively idealistic.

F
Kit and Kokiro Farren, Vee: After a rebellious, reckless phase from which came her son, Kit, Vee ascended the throne of Tangeltel, a major jitain kingdom. Before her death four years after Kit was born, she became very close with her cousin, Zachary Talleyrand, who was entrusted with many of her secrets. She also has some connection to Nizarah Mito. Also, even though her body is gone, either her spirit or her memory haunts Kit's subconscious mind--a realm only recently shared by Kokiro.

I
Kit and Kokiro Ishrian, Cody: a human, from Earth. He worked with Tarin Mito at a crappy restaurant of some sort, and then accidentally got jacked by the Jackers.
Kit and Kokiro Ishrian, Klear: a human/kujian, from Ui. Klear employs her cousin, William Tulan, to track down the former king of Tangeltel (Kit Farren) and bring him to her. Her reason for this has something to do with her possession of an older, run-down and malfunctioning version of Kokiro.

M
No Picture Martha: a human, from Earth. Martha is Tarin Mito's therapist and Motorcycle Guy's wife.
Kit and Kokiro Mito, Kade "Kadie": a kokirin, from Ui. Of all her siblings, Kadie is closest to Takaru--they're almost inseparable. She makes bizarre fashions statements (and bizarre statements in general), is self-confident and happily silly. She can also be very dangerous if she doesn't get her way. She gets along with Mitori and often dotes on Nizarah as if he were her baby brother, instead of older than her. She likes cute things and frivolity, and sock puppets.
Kit and Kokiro Mito, Karen: a human, from Earth. Before the whole alien situation, Karen had some kind of government job that probably didn't prepare her very well to be the Very Foreign Affairs liaison, even if it's not supposed to be a permanent appointment. Mostly her duties involve making sure Jitai eats and stuff.
Kit and Kokiro Mito, Mitori "Micky": a kokirin, from Ui. Mitori is better at protecting herself than her younger brother, Nizarah. Whenever possible she facilitates situations that allow both her and Nizarah's strengths to compliment each other (and make up for each other's weaknesses). Mitori finds herself drawn to the field of psychology, rather than physiology, and often her presence has a calming effect on those around her--an attribute sorely needed by her charges both at Feel Better and within her family.
Kit and Kokiro Mito, Mizarah "Zare": a kokirin, from Ui. The oldest brother of the Mito family, Nizarah is a quiet and introspective soul who feels more at home with nature, especially plants, than with people. Nizarah is a natural healer and his strange ability to heal with will alone alternately drives him to overdo himself trying to help and to become reclusive when this doesn't bring the desired results. The whole process leaves him weak and often ill. He becomes easily depressed and overwhelmed by the disparity between reality and how he feels reality *should* be. The Feel Better sanctuary for jitai is just the latest his and Mitori's many projects.
Kit and Kokiro Mito, Posai: a kokirin, from Ui. She is the youngest of the Mito family. Posai is withdrawn and easily upset. She likes to play with toys (sometimes subjecting them to violence) and often sleeps for long periods, almost comatose. Her older siblings take turns looking after her with a mixture of protectiveness and aprehension.
Kit and Kokiro Mito, Takaru: a kokirin, from Ui. Takaru is the younger brother of the Mito family, and the same age as Kade. He likes to see himself as wild and unpredictable, but he only lives up to that sometimes. He gets bored easily and often he and Kade scheme and cause little problems to relieve their restlessness. Takaru is very close with Kade (and closer still, briefly, with as many young ladies as he can charm), but is more distant towards Mitori and has often has to force camaraderie with Nizarah. If asked, he would probably list his main interests as alcohol, fast cars, and girls.
Kit and Kokiro Mito, Tarin: a human, from Earth. Tarin is the angsty and irritable teenager sister of Karen Mito. She lives with her sister and is forced to relocate when Karen becomes the VFA liaison. She has a crappy job at the same horrible fast food restaurant as Cody Ishrian.
No Picture Motorcycle Guy: a human, from Earth. He's married to Martha.

P
Kit and Kokiro Pippin: an android, from Nia. After both she and the subject of the project she'd been involved in were kidnapped, she was reprogrammed to command Kokiro and became an unofficial member of the Jackers organization.
No Picture Poopy: a cat, from Earth. It used to be Karen and Tarin's mom's cat. Now it's Karen's, though it's more likely that the old lady got carted away instead of dying.

S
Kit and Kokiro Sandy: a nian, from Nia. Sandy is the official leader of the Jackers organization, which was responsible for stealing Kokiro (and consequently setting it loose on the unsuspecting space-time continuum). She Sunny's bossy older sister.

Sunny: a nian, from Nia. Sunny is more frivolous and carefree than her older sister, Sandy (and cuter, too). Her devil's horns and tail are cosmetic implants--a short-lived fad among young girls in Nia. Though she is sometimes resentful of her sister's demands, she is unwaveringly loyal.
Kit and Kokiro Singer, Sudare: a tailimin, from Ui. Sudare is protective of, but often exasperated by, his brother Zouji. He is brave, and strong, and loyal. His main occupation is keeping Zouji out of trouble as the two of them embark on whatever mysterious errand Kuguick has sent them on. With the aid of a jitain gem on a ribbon, he can appear human.

Singer, Zouji: a tailimin, from Ui. Back at Singer's Warren, where Zouji and his brother, Sudare, grew up, Zouji looked after the tailimin pups in the warren's nursery. He is smaller than his brother and more agile (and sensitive), but he can be just as brave. He likes cute or silly things, friendly people, songs, and nursery rhymes.
No Picture Singer, Kuguick: a tailimin, from Ui. The patriarch of Singer's Warren, Kuguick is responsible for much of Sudare and Zouji's upbringing. The brothers obey him without hesitation, though their respect for him seems tinged with fear.
Kit and Kokiro Stone, Josephine "Joe": a human, from Ui. Joe is a ranger in the vast outlying forests of Coyote. Her job includes protecting the ecosystem that the town relies on, making peace with the northern dragons, and occasionally recovering wandering townsfolk. She lives deep in the forest and has little contact with the townsfolk, but this *in no way* makes her similar to an old crone. Ahem. Once she becomes involved with Kit (whom she knows only as "Jitai"), she abandons her post in order to get him to safety--though she didn't know how hard this would be. When asked why she is missing the lower half of her right leg, she replies "it was bit off by a shark."
Kit and Kokiro Stone, Roofus "Roo": a dog, from Ui. Roo and Joe have been together for a very long time, and though he is old and blind he is still mobile and intelligent, in large part because of the care she takes for him. He loves Joe very much and they share an incredibly strong bond. Roofus enjoys soft food, attention, and walkies.
No Picture Stone, Seraphim "Phimy": a human, from Ui. She was Joe's older sister.

T
Kit and Kokiro Talleyrand, Sparkles "Jitai": a jitai, from Ui. Sparkles is Zachary's apathetic and delusory wife. She lives with him and the rest of a number of jitai rescued by Mitori and Nizarah Mito at Feel Better, and hospital/jitai sanctuary. She is educated enough to know how to make herself appear human (though still pinkish and very pale). She recognizes the way she and her husband are growing apart, but it doesn't distress her much.
Kit and Kokiro Talleyrand, Zachary "Jitai": a jitai, from Ui. Zachary acted as Kit's regent before the war, and since the boy king's disappearance has become a prime minister representing not only the citizens of Tangeltel (of whom there aren't many left) but the majority of jitai everywhere. He had the appointment thrust upon him and his shoulders are constantly in danger of breaking under the weight of the responsibility. He is grateful to Nizarah and Mitori for helping him and his people and tries to do his best, but under his anxious and quiet personality is a deep frustration at the whole situation.
Kit and Kokiro Tulan, William: a kujian, from Ui. Tulan goes a lot of grunt work for his cousin, Klear, and has to survive and manipulate situations that will (hopefully) bring him closer to his goal of capturing Kit Farren for her. He wears a jitain gem around his neck so that he can appear human when he wants to (hey, thumbs are useful!)
