| | jazzy | Do I think all customers are assholes…?
No.
I wouldn’t have a roof over my head if it weren’t for them.
But you can’t argue the fact that there are assholes in this world and they’re bound to go out to eat some time.
I don’t think there’s a cook alive that can’t relate to the event in this strip. There’s no worse shot to a chef’s ego than a plate coming back from the dining room simply because a diner “didn’t care for it”. This, in itself, I’ve never particularly understood. Where else but in a restaurant can one get away with this shit? I can’t return a book, cd, magazine, etc…because I “didn’t care for it”.
As if this wasn’t bad enough; there are the people that consume nearly the whole meal before they come to this revelation. How shameless is this? Who are they kidding? It’s obvious to everyone involved that they’re looking for something for nothing, and don’t give a fuck about anyone but themselves. These are the assholes that I am talking about.
And, you can bet your shift drink, that their plate is the one that’s coming back right in the thick of a dinner rush!
There’s no question that we cooks deal with bullshit on a daily basis. This to me is perhaps one of the worst examples. A plate coming back is a form of rejection, no question. Any cook worth their whites takes some degree of pride in what they do. To have someone treat them like this is a grave insult, and inexcusable.
On a side note, lately, I’ve been dealing with a new form of rejection. I’ve been sending copies of my book to various publishers, and I currently have a nifty little pile of rejection letters on my desk. I thought that I had a marketable commodity in Obscene Cuisine, and a built in audience, but some pencil pushers out there don’t share my views.
I’m not sweating it though.
I work in restaurants.
My hide is thick!

It'll happen.....keep trying! -Posted on Mar 17, 2008 | | User: PowerMan X | | 5 | | Yeah, I've had days "similar" to that. Just when you thought you've done a good job, someone bursts your bubble. The customer is always right, but there has to be boundaries. Knowing Gerald, he probably insisted on this customer getting a new filet just to piss off Vinny. -Posted on Mar 17, 2008 | | User: leaderofstars | | 5 | | YEAH SHOW THE FREELOADER WHO'S BOSS!!!! -Posted on Mar 17, 2008 | | User: junglebean | | 5 | | I'll have to try that one~ -Posted on Mar 17, 2008 | | User: harryq | | 5 | | Nice one. -Posted on Mar 17, 2008 | Only registered members may vote.
