| | jazzy | I had kind of a problem with this movie. I watched it with my niece (who wants to be a chef now)!
In my opinion, television, movies, etc. have made the secret society of the white coats a candy coated, sugary sweet, pill, that I just cannot swallow any longer. Ratatouille being the pinnacle of the glamorization of the food service industry, and the straw that broke this camel’s back.
A professional restaurant kitchen is not a cuddly place. And, the talking heads that you see on The Food Network and morning talk shows are not a reflection of people in a kitchen, not in the least. A REAL restaurant kitchen (in my experiences) is usually filled with cussing, innuendos, and things that no small child should probably be privy to. Hell, a vast majority of people I’ve worked with over the years should probably not even be allowed near children. With that said, I just got to say… FUCK DISNEY for making a G rated piece of crap of something that should never be portrayed in such a puerile fashion.
The message of this movie is about a rat that knows what flavors work together, and longs to be a chef. Just because you know what mushrooms pair with what cheese does not mean you belong in a professional kitchen. Sorry kids. Cook at home, or be one of those countless obnoxious foodies that goes out to eat weekly/daily to be “moved”. Having passion, and a gifted palate is all well and good, but if you want to be a professional chef you better have a strong work ethic, a serious pain threshold, and not to mention a high bullshit tolerance. Also, you best be prepared to make some sacrifices, namely your social life.
I just hope that anyone that’s growing up with this glossy image of the industry knows what they’re getting into should they decide to start taking steps towards a career in the service industry someday. That’s all. I think it’s irresponsible of Disney and anyone else putting out these sweet images of a less than sweet industry.
But, what do I know?
I just hope my niece decides to go back to being a princess again.
I’d feel a lot better.

Ever see pretty woman? That's not how that story ever really ends. And hopefully no one decided they wanted to grow up to that job. -Posted on Apr 07, 2009 | | User: harryq | | 5 | | Amen. -Posted on Mar 06, 2008 | | User: PowerMan X | | 5 | | Muhahahaha, that is some funny stuff. I don't mean to laugh at your expense Jim, but I always see things in the lease serious manner. As for your comment MOrgan, I have to agree with you on the rat getting cooked, perhaps drowned in soup first! Keep em comming Jim. Your comic always brings a smile to my face! -Posted on Mar 03, 2008 | | User: MOrgan | | 5 | When I watched Ratatouille all your various cartoons ran through my head & I wondered what kind of movie it would have been if you had written it.
For some reasony, I imagine it would have ended with the rat being cooked & served to the critic. :-D -Posted on Mar 03, 2008 | Only registered members may vote. Sign up here! | |
