The Shepherdess Tale is about a young shepherdess named Zuriaa McFarland. She is also a wiccan in training, but the only time she is allowed to be trained by her grandmother, Redia Ridhood (a great wiccan in her time), is during the winter. Any other season and she can only study from the books she sneaks into her bedroom.

Her father is wanting Zuriaa to stay in Hinter Village to take over the farm when he gets older, but Zuriaa dreams of becoming a great wiccan. So, on Harvest Day when a very large wolf shows up and actually talks to her, she takes fate by the tail and runs away....after the Harvest Dance, that is.
