Woooo :D I just started up my new webcomic, here it is on drunkduck: http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Door_in_the_Rock/

It's a manga-style fantasy comic with elves and magick, islands, romance, and so on. XD

Here's the official site as well with more uhhh...stuff. I have plans to make maps of the areas they travel through and maybe a few cheap/easy java or flash games for the official site. XD Aaanyways, here's it is:

Please let me know what you think!

Thanks for all the compliments and so forth everybody :3 <3

And Mrpendant:

"Now, I can't tell from reading just three pages, but I have the worry from these first three pages that all I'll be reading in your comic is a lovingly-rendered pastiche of what other people have already done in manga."

Ahh..well XD See, I was under the impression that there really aren't that TOO many high fantasy-based comics, at least in comparison to say..superhero comics, or romance/highschool shoujo comics. Also, manga is not a "genre" as fantasy is a genre, manga is a style of drawing. There is lots of variation in manga as a style as well, but 'manga' isn't a type of story so this comparison doesn't really seem to make much sense O_o If you were to say "lots of people have fantasy stories involving elves and romance so it could end up being repetitive" that would make a lot more sense. XD

"What I'm afraid of is that you will, consciously or unconsciously, make your comic no more than a copy of a dozen or so manga with the same art style and in a similar genre. In your first three pages, you copy a number of manga conventions, from those little author's asides to having the same font as most translated manga."

Again, if I'm copying anything story-wise, it's not manga. If anything, the story can be compared to an expanded version of the story of Lutey's Wife, and folklore about the island of Tir Nan Og, and maybe a few other pieces of irish folklore. XD

As for my drawing style, it's SUPPOSED to be manga, so it follows that it SHOULD have the font of a manga-styled comic. :3 Actually, this was a suggestion I took from a great critiquer - mykill, I believe - a while back. I had been using varied fonts (as many webcomics do), but he suggested to use anime ace for ALL my dialogue to get a more professional look.

"By making your comic so manga-like, you invite comparisons to other manga, and frankly, there's a lot of manga out there that's very well-drawn but kind of boring because it's all been done before. You will have to succeed despite being compared to the best that manga has to offer. So, despite your obvious technical skill, you're going to have to work harder as a writer at making your comic shine."

Well, you can't really compare apples and oranges, right? XD So if people compare my comic to other manga, then that suits. And I don't expect my comic to really be the 'shiniest' or comparable to pro stuff. Or even for the story to be anything more than..mildly interesting, really, since this is all practice, and I'm certainly no master storyteller as of yet. So if the story is boring..oh well. I'm doing my best! XD I hope it's a good story, but I'm not really expecting a best-seller or fan favorite. I guess if it did end up popular I'd be pleasantly surprised.

I think of this comic as..a comic I'm writing and drawing for myself, for improvement, and I enjoy doing it. I ask for critiques/opinions because I want to see if anyone else likes/dislikes the story and why - another move towards improvement, and finding other folks into the same sort of stuff and draw on their inspirations. Of course, there's not much story to go on at the moment.

Any case..thanks for the comments :D

your toning is very nice, I wonder how exactly did you learn to tone because I can't really find any good screen tone teachings out there.

I use a combination of Photoshop and the program "ComicWorks" (and also MangaStudio) for toning. :3 I have special types of brushes I use in photoship to achieve a 'scratched away' look of real tones when needed.

Here's a good tutorial for learning how to screentone using photoshop: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/6689135/

And some other manga-making tutorials by my friend, Sai, who did the above toning tutorial. :3

You can download screentones for free from various sites, but there isn't really a great variety of freeones. I highly suggest purchasing ComicWorks or MangaStudio. :3

Only one more page left in chapter one of the comic :D It's a very short chapter - 9 pages only - but the next one will be much longer. The comic is here: http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Door_in_the_Rock/
