Hi All,

I'm new To Drunk Duck and I'm bringing with me my baby... My Team and I have just finished the First Issue (First 22 Pages) of Winter City.

A basic summary of Genre would be Dark and Thrilling Crime Drama with some horror elements for good measure. I'd say you will enjoy this 12 Issue tale if you at all like The Dark Knight, Seven, or Hannibal Lecter films.

We have 7 Pages up here now and I will add more every few days.

Link: Winter City on Drunk Duck

Hope you enjoy!

Pat

The Good: I loved your little opening animation thingy. Nice! :D

The Bad: It was difficult for me to navigate to the part available online, I almost said "forget it" before I found it. And when I did find it, the dialogue text is too small, it looks like about a font size 8 which would give me a headache to squint at. Also, the dual sidebar ads are obnoxious, I don't get those on other DrunkDuck webcomics so I assume they are part of your normal domain layout. I'd say if you really want to attract DrunkDuck readers, insert your comic pages into a more normal DrunkDuck layout without the ads. Also, you might put them in one page at a time, not this two comic spread thing, so that the comic text will end up bigger, if you can't make it any wider otherwise.

I personally love The Dark Knight and Hannibal etc, so I probably would have liked your comic, but I don't feel like reading it when the text is so small and the ads are so big :/

That's my two cents. I hope some of it might be helpful for you.

Hi Alessa,

Thanks for the feedback. You are welcome to read the comic here at Drunk Duck. Just follow my profile and you will find the pages.

http://www.drunkduck.com/Winter_City/

As for the font... It's standard print comic font size (The entire thing will be released in paper-back). I'm sorry you can't read it so well in your browser. I've increased the resolution by 100px and turned it into a single page slide show (as opposed to traditional book style).

I am surprised that the BIG RED "The Comics" button at the top of the page was so hard to understand... But fair enough.

I appreciate you offering your time to comment!

Oops, I clicked on the big shiny banner instead of the drunkduck link! I like it much better now that I look at it without the ads.

Since I thought the banner was the right link to click, instead of seeing "the comics" up there at the top, I automatically started scrolling down when the page loaded, expecting the first comic to be right there, that's why it took me a while to find. This one's not your fault since I clicked the wrong thing!

I don't think I'm wrong about the font clarity, however. Even other professional online comics like this one over at keenspot are just so much easier to read: Wayward Sons for example

Hope that helps.

I've bumped up the Resolution to 1000px by 660px... You are right, much better/easier to read.

Thanks,
Pat

Ok, now that I read the comic:

The art is incredible, reminds me of some professional Marvel artists. The paneling is well done. Blambot's fonts don't disappoint, as usual. The writing is good, a little on the cheesy/campy side ("you've done terrible things Alan McLean" "Every sin has a price"), but I like it that way, so no worries there ;)

The character designs are all rather good, I think my biggest qualm is actually Death's outfit. For some reason it doesn't feel like the fabric behaves naturally, to the point where I'm not even sure what it's supposed to be made out of/how flow-y or rigid it's supposed to be, and I don't really understand how it goes on his shoulders. I think part of that is intentional, he's supposed to look otherworldly, but somehow it feels a little off to me. It's really minor though. And I like his glowing eyes :)

I think my biggest nitpick so far is this page the focus blur on Death's right hand feels really out of place to me, with the rest of the art being so crisp. To me it just feels like someone scanned in the finished art and used a photoshop blur on his hand, the rest of it feels so pen-and-ink that a digital effect feels weird to me.

Anyways, I really like it overall! It kind of reminds me of the V for Vendetta comic, and I love that comic, so good job! I'd definitely consider buying it if the story is as interesting as it looks like it might be.

Also, I tried to be critical in order to be helpful, I'm not trying to be whiny, and I know my stuff isn't half as good, so don't think I'm being rude or anything, I'm not trying to be. :)

Hi Alessa - Some really great feedback there... I appreciate you having the guts to tell it how you see it. I'll pass your comments onto the other guys and we will try to keep on doing it better.

Hope we can keep you interested...

Thanks again,
Pat

I only had time for about 6 pages before work (and this comment) and I've gotta say I love it! On a 19'' monitor I was able to view the pictures without any problem. It might be a different story on my parents' monitor back at their house. I'll check it out and let you know when I go there this week :)

Dramatic start, cool animation and music in the beginning, EXTREMELY professional layout. I love the main character. Reminds me of Spawn! He must be fun to draw.

Keep rockin' em out. Anything less would be a sin
And you know what they say about sins.

P.S. I totally feel your pain about the stupid ads. My site has those too.

Great-looking art, but its feels like a spawn ripoff.

I hope you had a chance to go back and read all of it.

Evil_Hare - Thanks for taking the time to look and comment.

Actually it's a blatant rip-off of the mythical creature known as "The Grim Reaper" or "Death" or "the Fourth Horseman"... But yes we have taken some stylistic cues from such popular comics as Spawn, The Darkness, Witchblade, Hellboy... It makes commercial sense to mix styles that have had a large success as opposed to risking it all on something new, raw and funky.

I assure you the character and the story is nothing like Spawn (or the other above mentioned comics)... No Demons, no devil, no Violator, no angels, no time-is-running-out powers, etc, etc. It's more of a psychological, real-to-life crime-thriller (Hannibal Lecter, JigSaw, et al).

Should all become clear as we get through the next couple issues.

The art looks really cool. Not sure what to say about the story so far, but it seems like the characters got some flesh on their bones. (WEll, except the reaper).

All in all, I am defintely going to come back to read more of this comic.

Julien Brightside - Hey, that's great!

I sure hope you like the next issue. So far I think it's much better (But I am bias).

Thanks,
Pat
