Just wanted to share how violent the original manga was. It is actulally more violent than the anime version.

No, the Yu-Gi-Oh manga is really good. It's way cooler before they get into the card aspect of it.

That's an interesting video, though I really wouldn't say that the Japanese version is "violent". Possibly less "kid-friendly", but it really isn't that violent compared to most other stuff out there.

Ah yes, the ol' cuts.
Yes it's a kid show in Japan...but lets just say Japan...doesn't try so hard to hide kids from reality? (Or in this case fantasy.) I'm sure the characters say "damn" plenty in the original too.

I just had show this clip too. In my opinion Dartzs voice kind of sucks in the japanese version I just can't seem to take him seriously in the jpn version.

I remember first reading the YuGiOh manga in Shounen Jump some time ago after first watching the anime. I was rather shocked at how sadistic Yami Yugi was. But, yeah, I'll have to agree with Vinnie that it was pretty neat until it fell into the card game thing. Not to say that it didn't have card game stuff in the beginning part of it, but it was just so wonderfully dark with all the mind crushes.
Though, of course, that brought up the whole "monster of the week" thing, which would have gotten boring after a while. But there's just so much breeming potential with the dark magic... but no, we have people playing a children's card game!

The card game is what's cool about YuGiOh. Without it, it's just another shonen manga about some kid with magical powers battling evil.
Remember YGO is the first to use the "card game magic" formula. What this enabled was the ability for the reader to appreciate HOW the battle was won, like in Hikaru No Go but even more detailed.

Yes, but having a card game is no excuse for having some of the stuff in there. I remember watching the Duelist Tournament and thinking "Where in the hell are they getting some of this stuff?" The Swords of Revealing Light holding up the Castle of Dark Illusions? If you're going to be using a card game, at least stick to the rules of the game. It's fine to have holograms or whatever you'd like for it, but at least stick to the rules of the game!
I would have to argue about a kid with magical powers fighting evil. I'd say that Yami is(was) just as evil as any of the people he was battling at the beginning of the manga. And I'd also say that the card game aspect of it was totally monopolizing it, as well as being completely unrealistic. Granted, it is manga, so a fair amount of realism is assumed to be suspended, but some of the stuff that they do just over a card game is ridiculous.

I liked The Shadow Games, or rather un-extraly titled original Yugioh series. Evil Pharoah was awesome and funny. Loved the second ep with the robber in the cafe.
