You know in those karate movies they like have masters and stuff. Like a teacher/mentor/guru person you learn from?

So who is your webcomic master?

(And I don't want this to become another what professional artist inspires you.. so what webcomic, art teacher or comic artist that you have actually communicated with is an inspiration and a teacher to you?)

I think some people know this already, but Kristen_Gudsnuk is totally my webcomic master. She was here first and was my roommate so she told me I should post my comic (that was still in the planning stages at the time) on this site. If I didn't know her I wouldn't be here today.

THANK YOU SENSEI!!! (or Sempai???)

my webcomic master would be...uh...damn...idk, Ive never actually consulted just one person about KFK

"Kung Fu Komix IS...hardcore martial art action all the way. 8/10" -Harkovast
"Kung Fu Komix is that rare comic that is made with heart and love of the medium, and it delivers" -Zenstrive
"Kung Fu Komix is...so awesome" -threeeyeswurm
"Kung Fu Komix is..told with all the stupid exuberance of the genre it parodies" -The Real Macabre

Mishi.
Most definitely Mishi.
She's guided me through since the 3rd time I remade my comic.
And she's helped me out so much.

BetaJess is my co-collaborator on Salt and BNR, my best friend, my roommate, and my art teacher ^.^ Lucky me!

Aside from her, I've gotten great tips from JustNoPoint and Trevor regarding effects and colors and lettering.

I'd have to say maritalbliss (Lynn) was my biggest supporter and full of encouragement and tips when I was feeling very alone and talentless. I don't think she's around any more. Locoma's been great at giving me tips and support too, but I never see him around either. I guess that sort of thing happens with one's mentors... (Kristen helped me a bit in the beginning too. I thought she vanished like the others. ;) )

If they do happen upon this thread, I want to express my heartfelt thank yous for putting up with me and encouraging me through my most pathetic attempts at art. They helped me tons with my self esteem too.

I have to add that JustNoPoint really helped me, especially as my "mentors" vanished. I was always impressed by his work and thought he was one of *the* artists. (You know, like the cool kids or celebrities who you can't approach.) When he started talking to me and giving me tips, I was completely flattered. (That's true for many of my readers. I feel very "not worthy" of all the support of amazing artists and/or writers.)

Ok, I don't know if that really qualifies... but I used to talk with Dwight L. Macpherson while he still had a message board at Shadowline and question him a little about webcomics and stuff (since his Surreal Adventures of Edgar Alan Poo originated as a webcomic... a drunkduck webcomic even!). He told me about buffers, being on time, suggested drunkduck and/or smackjeeves and basically that was it. :D

This reply may be a bit lame because instead of specific individuals I give the nod to the general forum populace of Drunk Duck, which is why I keep returning here whether or not I currently have a strip or a story running.

The thing is that although I am older than nearly everyone posting in these forums,I know that it would be very easy and wrong and STUPID of me to get up on my age-high-horse and refuse to listen to anyone significantly younger than me or with substantially less cartooning experience. Yet I have no problem taking advice from posters still in their early teens. It's results and attitude that matter to me. People with good attitudes, who get good results with their techniques, command my respect. It's as simple as that.

Bittertea helped me alot on art questions, both traditional and digital.

I also use her as a part-time editor because now I suddenly have a lot of female characters in my story, and I don't want to sound like "a guy writing women's dialogue."

LAX probably. Although it was very short and was kinda just dropped because Myxo is a big 4chan dwelling homo (love ya' babe), it was pretty motivating to be working at the same time he was. Fond memories of Blue Glass Comics where he and I were producing LAX and Le Farce at near the same rate.

As for direct inspirations to my actual work, I dont think there has been anyone on the web besides maybe Tater who has had a hand in shaping the humor of my comics. My art draws a lot from Otomo (this sort of half french half manga sort of style).

Would love someone to guru me through tone sheets though. Damn am I having a hard time with that. If anyone can throw a bone and show me the ways, I would love to hear it. Teach me oh wise ones.

i'm afraid i don't have one, i'm more of a self-teaching person, although i sometimes feel i would like to have one, and as a lurker i think the people who have been most helpful to me in this webcomic business are Skullbie skoolmunkee and ozoneocean.

hooray!!!! Watashi wa SENSEI DA!
uhh... hehe?

idk, I'd have to say all my readers have helped me innumerably. When I fiiirst started, it was the week that Lola got featured, and I... well, idk I thought that comic was rad.

Usedbooks has always been around to offer support, ideas, etc...

Oh! and Theorah has been a great help/friend over the years! we were even penpals, although I er, stopped writing to her (I'm a horrible person. But I was so busy! grghh) when I first signed up to DD I thought of her as some sort of celebrity (even though she's younger than me..) so when she started reading *my* comic I was so flattered! Actually, I've seen her artwork in a book @ Barnes & Noble (I randomly came across it and thought, 'hey this looks like theorah's drawings, and in the back THERE WAS HER REAL NAME! I even took a picture of it with my camera phone.) Also, she was the one to tell me to use rulers for my panel lines (heh) and to type the words in the speech bubbles. (I had to get photoshop first.)

Oh, and Jillyfoo, your comments always make my days brighter! you even interviewed me once O_O that was such fun...

For my new comic, I asked for critique and everyone gave me some, and because of it, the obligatorily awkward first few pages weren't nearly so awkward!! : D (although I should probably re-draw the first page, and re-photograph the first few pages...)

;O; Sorry I abandoned you usedbooks! I mean, I read just about all your archive, but I kept hitting "save this page as bookmark" instead of "go to bookmark" and I kept losing my place... : ( and with an archive like yours, it's hard to find that place again. that actually happens with SO MANY COMICS with me.. those damn buttons are too similar!! I'm sure I'll get back to it someday...

They're not on DD (as far as I know!) but I first began posting my comic on the web at a site called Midnite Comics (sadly no longer with us). I learned a lot of the techy side from the guys who set that up.

Here at DD, JustNoPoint gave me a lot of help when I was trying to customise my comic pages.

That's a hard one, since I'm very self reliant in my work... One person though that I communicated with and gave me some tips: Monique MacNougton, aka Coydog.
She's a mighty comics mater.

Over the years though I've been friendly with a lot of masterful webcomic makers, truly talented experts whose skills floor me, but I never usually ask for tips or anything or consult on technique.

Oh, I consulted a few times with Skoolmunkee on styles. There's that :)

/ic/ was pretty much my mentor, they were really harsh but helped me see how terrible my anatomy was. It was through them that i learned about loomis and posemaniacs- i worked for literal months just practicing anatomy.

For coloring i was pretty much on my own with that, i examined how people on DA did their paintings and had some help from saiko, but the biggest help was a custom brush from studioqube that i apply in all my stuff now.

Also Kristen Gudsnuk recently gave me a really good ideas :3

Damn. I don't have a mentor, not really. I'm like Musashi! Just kidding. Maybe that's what I've been lacking. Not to say that I haven't got some good tips from people around here, (Trevor, Warped and Skullbie are about the only ones I can think of.) And reading other peoples' comics has given me some ideas, (usedbooks, mlai, Justnopoint, bittertea, PIT_FACE and Hyena Hell, and I'm sure some other that I can't think of right now.) I used to have a friend that called me her "comic guru" though. I'll admit that the idea of having a webcomic master is pretty cool.

I don't really have a comic master, I've had people who have been helpful and given me great tips, especially mayshing, MagickLorelai, and a girl named ladydove at Deviantart. Speaking of, I use my Deviantart a lot for asking anyone reading for their opinions/tips and utterly abusing the polls when I have them, and so I get helpful tips there too.
Though I think I should stop that actually, I'm getting the impression I'm getting on some people's nerves there.

So yeah, I've been more of a short opinion or tip seeker, and sort of went from there myself. So call me "the lone wanderer who leeches tidbits off anyone". I have never had one sole person who I've looked to for guidance, which maybe I should actually, it might help with my indecisiveness.

What I really need is a writing master, because I seriously blow at that. >_>

Many many people have aided me in one way or another. Either through various feedback or with their comic being an example for me.

There are 3 people I would really consider my "mentors" here.

mlai
Bittertea
and EdBang

Those 3 have went above and beyond the call of duty to teach me things and slap me into shape. Especially mlai. I would say 80% of my artistic improvements come due to his input/influence.

I feel bad narrowing it down so much, but I can't think of anyone that has helped me as much as those 3. On DD and off, at times with more than just comics! Dawww, c'mere guys(and gal) give me a hug :3

Read "The Devon Legacy".

I've gotten a lot of help/information from a lot of folks here, and other places...

But, I have to say, I was able to pick DJ Coffman's brain a bit, back when, and he gave me all kinds of good advice and information, and frankly if it weren't for him, I probably wouldn't have even taken the webcomics rout at all.

A also throw a lot of cred in the direction of the book (the the halfpixel guys who wrote the book) How to Make Webcomics. Good good stuff.

I have a lot of friends in webcomics, but I wouldn't call any of them my master. When we talk, it's more of an equals thing.
This is possibly due to me being too much of a dork to talk to most of the people I look up to and could consider a master of mine.

If we're talking about encouragement, I'd say my junior/senior-year English teacher. I never actually showed her any comics, but we would have a few drawing assignments and then I'd get a bit of praise for generally doing better than most (95% ?) of the class. It wasn't that hard, but I think she saw the effort I put in.

It's a shame I only sporadically draw now, as I've gotten even better since then.

I don't have one. And I want one.

I mean, a great big handful of webcomics inspire me, but not one in particular for which the author could be called my master. :( Strange... I would like to be able to know some people better for more direct inspiration though, hehe.

I was doing this stuff before there were mentors.

I'm old. *sobs quietly in a corner*

Although there were a handful of people on the comic genesis forums that gave me tips here and there. I still get random tips from random people. No one in particular. Mostly on technical web design stuff.

aw, that's an easy one. Guy Gilchrist he had a cartoonist academy here in town i attended and it DID kinda become like karate kid a little bit. hahaha. i couldnt pay for classes sometimes, so i'd go to his and his wife's house and clean up the yard, or file some papers and stuff like that. it was a WICKED class, i learned a LOT from it! it was also cool to be with so many like minded people, made some good friends there i've unfortunately lost track of.since im moved back now, i should really get a hold of Guy again. great, great teacher!

also my brother, cuase even though i've surpassed him a bit, he always had good taste in comics and shared em with me, and he's where this all is commin from so him too.
