After seeing this [abc.net.au] it got me thinking; what's in a DD member's Pile of Shame. What games have you never finished for whatever reason, whether they be too hard, too boring or real life getting in the way.

For me, one game I've never been able to finish is Donkey Kong 64, because I cannot get past the fourth boss, that goddamned blowfish! ARG! So, how about you guys?

I have yet to even start playing New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I also just restarted on Super Mario World, after getting stuck on World 5 a while back. I have yet to finish either of the most recent console Zelda games. Probably my least shameful is giving up on I Wanna Be the Guy at the final boss. That's all that I had left.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, for the Xbox. That game is unbelievably difficult and some of the mechanics are broken to the point of near impossibility. I only got to the fourth stage and then got stuck.

Persona 4. I got the bad ending by answering some questions wrong and saved right before a super irritating boss that took a good 30 minutes to kill after half a dozen failed attempts. Now I could reload and try again, but ehhh...

I consider myself an achievement whore. And for this reason, no game is complete until that little bar is filled up to maximum. It's somewhat of a curse to have that feeling, because it requires an unwieldy amount of time compared to what any reasonable gamer would put into it.

As such, I now have Half-Life 2 and it's predecessor, Episode One, chalked up on the to-do list. I was unfortunate enough to to stumble upon the updated version releasing the new achievements for these games...

Also, I haven't got around to finishing Might and Magic for the DS. It's an excellent title if I do say so myself, it's just that I haven't been able to pick it up for more than five minutes at a time before something or other distracts me from it.

I've always found RPG's particularly difficult to pick back up. You have to remember what you've done and what you were doing since you last left off. It's the reason they get denied that remaining play-through unless I'm really bored.

Final Fantasy X because it was awful.

And I'm currently working on the .hack// games. I'm on the second one and have the third already, but I keep dying because my party are idiots. :l

I also have Harvest Moon: Animal Parade, which I won't consider "finished" until my two kids are born and I can summon the Harvest King. But I have no time to play that one, so...

I also haven't finished The Answer of Persona 3 FES because it's not nearly as fun as The Journey and I already know the ending, so who cares.

Ditto. It felt very tacked on. I couldn't take the disappointment after a while.

Far too many to list (or even remember!) In fact it's easier to think of the few games I have finished!

I suppose the most recent "Big Name" game that I gave up on was Gears of War. The game itself was okay (although not as good as I'd been led to expect) but at some point - hopefully quite near the end! - I was faced with a giant spider-monster-thingy that crashed down from above. All well and good, except I seemed to be armed with two of the most useless weapons in the game for tackling that particular beastie and there was no way to go back and collect the ones I'd discarded earlier.

After I'd died a couple of dozen times I just lost interest; not just in defeating that particular monster but in the game as a whole. I realised I'd reached the point where I didn't even care that I'd never finish it!

Just for reference before you do start those games, Half Life 2 comes before Episode 1, not the other way round. God knows what genius games developer thought of naming a sequel Episode 1, but there you go!

Oh, oops! Did I say predecessor? I meant uh...it's derivative?

I was aware of the odd naming scheme (and I agree, the whole Episode thing just seems to throw you off, but then again, I've seen worse), but thanks for pointing out my mistake. Well this is just awkward. :nervous:

Resident Evil Code Veronica: I got to a boss battle and only had a handgun with one clip left, and I would've had to back track about 5 hours in the game to gather enough ammo, so I just quit.

Metroid Prime: I got stuck in an area and couldn't get out.

Zelda Wind Waker: When it turned into a sailing game, I quit.

Those are the three that stand out, I usually finish every game. If I don't finish, it's usually because I get stuck at a point, and in order to get out it would require me to start at a save point from 5-6 hours earlier. And I just don't feel like playing through something again unless I really enjoy the game.

It's a Grizzly Bear battling Zombies. Do you need to know more?

Oh yeah, I haven't finished Final Fantasy 7 or 8, but I'm near the end in both.

I also haven't finished the GBA Kingdom Hearts, that whole card battling system was too hard to get a handle of.

Hmm... most games I never finished because I was too young and stupid to stop dying, or I would just get bored and forget about them. Stuff like: Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, House of the Dead, Sonic Shuffle and Super Mario 64.

The only game in memory I've never finished recently was Shadow the Hedgehog. I realized in the middle of playing it that wasn't having fun at all, shut off the system and never touched it again.

Final fantasy XII it did ruin FF series for me.
i hated that game for serveral reasons.
World: looks awfull alot like star wars.
characters: an idiotical character who is very young... and dresses in weird clothes.
Plot:.. never understood the game at all and it was just... stupid.
so i threw out the game and didn't want to knowledge it as a FF game. only as a Star war game. heh.

there are more games... but can't list them all. hehe

Every single one.

3 for example:

Kingdom Hearts - Let me explain this. I did beat it. Then I was celebrating. Then it froze. Then I started crying. Then I tried again. Then I got my ass handed to me 37 times in a row. Then I cried again.

Earthworm Jim - Level two?

Guitar Hero 1 - I got bored of it and haven't picked up the controller since.

The Game - As in the game-damn. I lost the game again.

Final Fantasy 7 & 8
Kingdom Hearts

I pretty much never get these types of games anymore. I just find them too damn long-winded and boring (though I barely got into Kingdom Hearts, I ended up watching my sister play that more than anything, and I don't think she beat it either). I probably went the farthest in 7 because the story was pretty good.

Halo 1
Call of Duty 4
Grand Theft Auto 4
Dead Space

I don't remember why I stopped with these, probably just because I got other games I was more interested in playing at the time. I came close to beating GTA4 though.

Dragon Age: Origins
I loved the interaction and story in this game, but the gameplay...UGH. Reminded me too much of something like Final Fantasy...I like having more control over my movements. It seemed to be just as long-winded too, I was in that freakin' Dwarf city for AGES.

Mario Galaxy
While it's a good game, I just don't have enough interest in the Italian plumber to keep coming back...

Most non-2D Sonic games
I remember a lot of treasure hunting and tedious gameplay were in these too.

Borderlands
This just made me want to play Fallout 3...

I'm sure there's a lot more, but these immediately come to mind.

Personally, I'm ashamed that I have finished Donkey Kong 64. That game is a pile of shame.

Games I still (shamefully) haven't beaten: Okami, Persona 3 and 4, Every PSP and DS game I own, and ICO. Though, I'm currently taking care of the ICO problem.

Not a fan of platformers? I actually miss these types of games. Then again, they're very good at feeding the OCD collector-enthusiast within me.

Oh, I like platformers just fine. I really liked the Donkey Kong Country games, but collecting 100% of all the bananas and other trinkets was optional, and the main challenge was just surviving the level. Collecting everything in the level was a fun diversion, and it was the way to discover hidden secrets.

But in Donkey Kong 64, collecting all the bananas was the main focus of the gameplay, and most of the time I was just retreading old ground with multiple characters. I'm just not a fan of the OCD collecting aspect.

Well, I haven't finished GTA IV (the campaign, not just the percentage). But I don't want to. It's so good I don't want it to end. So it's sort of like there for me to do a mission or two when I want. In between new games I buy, I'll play some GTA IV.

I'm terrible about this. Seriously frakking terrible. I've actually got a shelf set aside for these;

Tenchu Shadow Assassins (never opened)
Mario Kart Wii (played once)
Lost in Blue Shipwrecked (lost interest)
Dissidia (got bored)
Patapon 2 (got distracted)
Crisis Core (got distracted)
God of War, the ENTIRE series (never opened)
Metal Gear Acid 1 (got bored)
Metal Gear Acid 2 (never opened)
Obscure The Aftermath (never got started)
Lost Planet Extreme Colonies (Red Dead Redemption)
Mario and Luigi's; Bowser's inside story (Red Dead Redemption)
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (Red Dead Redemption)
Scribblenaughts (Got bored)
50 Cent Blood on the Sand (Got bored. Plays like Gears of War but it aint)
Afro Samurai (got really hard really fast)
Transformers War for Cypbertron (unopened)
Fear 1+2 (got distracted)
Dragon Age (got distracted)
Mass Effect 2 (got distracted)
Wet (got bored)
Nier (Red dead Redemption)
Batman Arkham Asylum (got distracted)
Splinter Cell Conviction (Red Dead Redemption)
3D Dot Heroes (never opened)
Final Fantasy 13 (Red Dead Redemption)
Disgaea 1+3 (come on... that's just impossible)
Infamaous (got bored)
Little Big planet (got distracted)
Heavy Rain (got distracted)
Overlord 2 (got distracted)

In case you were wondering, games I got distracted from were games I enjoyed, but when a new one came out I... got distracted. Red Dead Redemption on the other hand just went and ate up nearly a month of my game time; played that thing solidly until I had done everything.
