I know -- there's a BILLION of them out there! So limit it to ones that you think are truly hilarious, well-synched or cool beyond qualification. I suggest limiting it to one AMV per post.

Scott Melzer's probably the best AMV editor I've ever met. He does a bunch of good ones which end up on youtube, and he also created the fan parodies "This Is Otakudom" and "S.T.E.A.M: The Movie".

This is a mix of the actual music video and the amv. I think it's the best I've seen.

Damn! That IS a good AMV. A little too many cuts maybe, especially in the beginning, but by the end they really know exactly what they're doing. Also makes me go "Damn, those Japanese really know what they're doing with animation!"
Man, that takes me back to the days when I used to watch so much anime...

My favorite AMV is one for Haibane Renmei. There is so much emotion in it!

This is one of the first I ever saw, and it still makes me smile, especially the beginning.
I also really like this one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrU9tVQmL1c I think this one's pretty well-synced, and hey, the song's a classic!

I don't know if it counts, but my favorite AMV is Interstella 5555 [en.wikipedia.org]. That badboy runs at one hour and eight minutes, but it's one hour and eight minutes of awesome.

I can't believe no one's mentioned the AMV Hell series! Those are hilarious!
I've seen 1, 2, and 3, and bits and pieces of Championship Edition. There's apparently an AMV Hell 0, but it's only for 18 and older.

Technically this isn't an AMV, but watch it. This is epic.

I don't like AMVs. Usually they're just unmatching clips of somebody's favorite anime paired with a song we've all heard too much. And somehow the person who made it thinks they did something awesome. So I've never really been a fan.
Except this one:

I thought this one was pretty clever. It's not technically an anime, but it is a cartoon, so I say it counts.
highest rating so far has been #11 in comic books, #13 overall. It's pageviews are almost half a million!!

That AMV made me watch Haibane Renmei. Now I'm all done... what a beautiful anime, sob!!
I thought this Haibane Renmei AMV was very good too. At least I understand the language of this song!

All AMVs suck ass. Its a stupid idea by definition.
That said, someone sent me a link to one over a year ago that I laughed my ass off at. It was a bunch of random song clips put to animes, I think it as called AMV hell. I could only stomache about half of it, but the best moment was when Whitney Housten came on singing the bodyguard song with the dragonball Z guys doing a power up thing. It was funny. I remember nothing else from the video clip.
Again, the idea of using a copyrighted work to make a music video to Linkin Park or whatever crappy music people make these things for, is lame. Its just a hacky silly thing to do. Like cosplay, anime, or cookie-cutter jrpgs people never learn.
