I just got this weird idea...had no idea where to put it. Art? Media?? I don't know... O.o

Despite what time period/world setting your characters are in...what music do you think they would listen to? Would they have the exact same taste as you or something else?

For some reason...I could always see Jack listening to The Doors. I don't know why, I just think he would (I don't listen to them that much).....and now I want to draw him rockin' out in Jim Morrison's leather pants. XD Maybe later I'll sketch that or something, haha.

(Feel free to draw your own characters rockin' out by the way....or you can just name it.)

Hey this is a good one.

Flash = Queen LOL!

Hanes = blues, folk, jazz, and country.

Cat = stage musicals and show tunes.

Nuada = no preference, can access yottabytes of music data, but likes soothing tunes.

Chase = St. Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179); her music sounds like New Age.

The nameless warrior = none

Hanno = Nine Inch Nails and industrial metal.

Amok = Conlon Nancarrow and other player piano compositions, typically music played far beyond human performance ability.

There's no doubt in my mind that Dasien listens to 80s rock and pop. Somewhere in her apartment is a shelf loaded with CDs by Bon Jovi, Ratt, Billy Joel, Stan Bush, Def Leppard, Europe, Toto, and other such acts.

Parker probably likes stuff of the same era and later, but generally anything with a harder edge. She probably has "Shout At The Devil," "Screaming For Vengeance," and "Somewhere In Time" on a shelf in her living room.

It's hard to picture the villains rocking out to popular music, but Lord Crimson would probably dig Pink Floyd. Roger Waters era, naturally.

One of my characters is wearing a Sonic Youth shirt... so I guess it's safe to say he's a Sonic Youth fan.

Zoe: Queen, Pink Floyd, The Who, Chopin and Beethoven and movie soundtracks. Among other things ;)

David: Violin pieces. Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Vanessa Mae, Irish folk music, Scorpions, the Doors, Rolling Stones, Kenny G... he listens to pretty much everything. XD

Mike: He's into electric guitar a lot, and drums. He also has a thing for fusion music and Bach. And heavy metal. Yes he's odd.

I don't think I want to know what Jane and Edith listen to. lol!

How interesting a topic... Hmm...

I know Yuki listens to annoying children's songs because that's what she sings constantly and incessantly. She's probably into dance music too, since she likes parties and clubs.

Seiko is most likely into classical music. Her mother was a concert cellist, and she spent her childhood among the upper class society. I think she'd enjoy nearly anything, since she's into experiencing many facets of society and befriending all types of people.

I'm not sure about Kaida, though. Probably anything old and foreign. Celtic music, old hymns, stuff like that. I believe Kaida's sister Violet would be into inspirational/county music. She just seems like the type.

I think Alex is probably into whatever the flavor of the month is. (He's such a typical teenager.) I don't think Fudo listens to anything aside from his own thoughts. I don't know what Tristan or Mike listen to.

C@P are based on us, so I'll do MDW for fictional characters...

Jason: Jazz, and lounge from that time frame, he's a big sinatra fan.

Death: 1950's-1970's era Pop, Motown and Doo-wop

Sarah: Mid nineties to mid 2000's pop, she hasn't listened to much new stuff in a while "i like a little of everything"

Tony, Kevin, Debra: Radio hip-hop

Nigel: classic brit-punk, obscure underground metal

Katherine, David, Isaac: My Chemical Romance, Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park

Frank: Used to listen to classic rock, now he's migrating more towards delta blues and american folk

Elise: Contemporary Pop, Ska

Cassie: 70's Rock, some punk

Fred: doesn't listen to music really

Gozer: jungle, Drum and Bass

Eric: Classic Rock

Moonblossom: you know, hippie music

Duncan: Raggae, ska, 80's pop

Some of my characters are based on me, so they also share the same musical tastes.

Elementiss (Tiffany) - She likes good ol' rock music, in the vain of Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Katatonia, Radiohead, Anathema, etc.

Chill (Scott) - Punk bands such as Rancid, Minor Threat, Leftover Crack, Cheap Sex...

Inferno (Clyde) - Death metal fan, he likes Obituary, Entombed, Dismember, Kataklysm, At The Gates, Aborted, and many more...

Sonic Morph (Raphael) - Thrash metal fan, worships Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pantera, Anthrax, Megadeth, Shadows Fall, Slayer...

Shadow Stalker (Samuko) - She doesn't listen to music.

Mindbruise (Tybalt) - Classical music fan

Cthulhu - He knows all, from metal to rock, from jazz to reggae, he knows it!

I'm thinking Skate Dude would listen to some hard rock type of stuff around his friends, but when he's alone or with his mom I think he would enjoy some oldies and music that feeds thought.

Tily would listen to whatever's popular on the radio no matter what it was.

Nell would be all about music that helps her escape her memories, but I'd venture to say that there would be a hint of her past in most of what she listens to.

And Dreaded Eater himself would love 80's rock!

The kid in Broken Things listens to everything, though Cocteau Twins is perhaps his favorite.

Terran Sandz doesn't know what music is. His god doesn't approve of it.

Dead hates everything but 70's music. His personal favorites are Grand Funk Railroad & Chic. He'll do early Chicago, though he once killed someone just because they were playing post 70's Chicago on their boombox.
Creator of Terran Sandz and Broken Things , and now Dead . Check 'em out.

well, as I've mentioned a few times in my comic, "Sad Death" is Tom's favorite band (it's on this page and he's got a Sad Death poster in the background of this page so I think it's safe to say that he listens to emo music. obviously (he's such an emo!!)

and Eve, I think, would listen to really harmonious music, a band like Belle & Sebastian (if there are any in the distant future) and probably showtunes and stuff. but she actually has a Blue Oyster Cult poster in the background of this page , and of course she loves emo things (like Tom and King) so I think she'd enjoy 'don't fear the reaper' or its equivalent.

I see Erika as someone who would like The Talking Heads or a similar band... on this page she actually has a talking heads-esque poster in the bg!! it says, "psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est? lulz!

Leif likes folk music. on this page, he sings an old Peter, Paul & Mary song(OMG OLD PAGE, EWW!) called 'weave me the sunshine'... it's such a joyously amazing song... ;_;!!

King would probably have the most eclectic tastes-- he's secretly into the angry screaming with loud brash guitars and chaotic drums sort of music, but he likes classical music as well; I'd imagine him as enjoying stuff like Overture of 1812 (with the cannons!! THE CANNONS!!) but also softer nocturnes would be his style.

Zombie's favorite band is the Sex Pistols, and he's probably the only one in my comic who's actually heard of them!! ^.^!! and he was a rock star once, so it's safe to say he probably likes his band a lot, which was experimental-rock (kind of like visual kei except in english!!)

I think that covers all the interesting characters. --oh wait!! Suzy would like something like Kate Bush... especially "wuthering heights"!
and Cliff would be into pop music, probably. anything catchy.

I've actually thought of trying to put together a soundtrack for my comic. One side is the Superchum side. The other side is the Anti-Chum side.

Right now I've got Gnarls Barkley's Smiley Faces and The Beatles' Penny Lane for Superchum. And AC/DC's TNT, and XPlosion by Outkast for the Anti-Chum side.

But all that's going to change soon. A friend I did some design work for is in a band that's actually going to do me a theme song. I'm pretty excited about that.

Oh yeah, and past Superchum comics used to have tons of musical references and appearances. Every single page/installment of my strip that ran senior year in college was titled after a quote from a Wu-Tang Clan song. And I even had the Wu-Tang Clan appear in a throwaway gag panel (as well as Dr. Dre and Ice Cube in a different sight gag). The first issue of Superchum that was published had more Wu camaeos by Raekwon and Ghostface, as well as the rapper Nine. And the ending quoted a Mobb Deep song (Shook Ones). And I had a Mobb Deep album cover poster hanging in the comic shop where some of the action took place. Ginger Spice (in her role as U.N. Goodwill Ambassador) appeared in the comic when it ran in the Lansdale Reporter. And Britney Spears just recenly appeared in the current chapter as a sight gag.

:)

I could picture Cricket liking a kind of aucoustic folk-punk but I don't imagine her listening to it as much as singing into her toothbrush out of key. I imagine Cricket's Grandmother liking symphonies and folk ballads very much, and being blind she'd probably appreciate music more than most. Creature... well, he's mute and an alien. As such his opinions remain sort of obscure though I think he might aprove more of Grandma's music than Cricket's.

Hey thanks Sarah. Because of this thread, I thought about some things I didn't think of before, and consequently was able to add a touching new scene to arc 2 of my storyline. (Sob!)

I can't believe I'm using so much music/lyrics for my comic. It's beginning to feel like a Disney movie (except Disney would never use music like these).

I agree -- very interesting topic!

Here's what I can think up:

Doug Hu - Classical guitar/flamenco music

Crystal Mills - Die-hard 80's fan (not shown yet but it is so)

Sapphira Hu - General pop/dance. She likes a fictional band called French Toast 5

Brielle Mills - Dance/edgy techno

Carolyn Maye - contemporary Christian, some traditional gospel and instrumental music

Deon Maye - Anything gothic or dark and foreboding. Likes fictional bands Living Less and Skool of Pain

Lindsay Steury - goth and heavy metal
Allen S., co-author/artist
Due East

Big Angry Black Guy loves gangster rap, especially late 80s early 90s stuff.

Tranny is more of a new wave synth pop type.

Pothead Snowman is of course a fan of Phish and Greatful Dead.

Fat Blue Lady likes Winona Judd and Aretha Franklin types.

The Three Emo punks like the music from their name sake, the whiny emotional hardcore type of stuff.

Chester enjoys surf rock, as does Rape Man.

The Sales Goblin will only listen to Tony Robbins self help tapes on how to be successful in sales.

One last character,

Balldy is a big fan of Molly Hatchet and Lynerd Skinard type of southern rock. He's that green guy that looks sort of like something.

Any other characters in penis should be assumed to like Sports by Huey Luis and nothing else.

I would say Nadya would listen to indie bands that no one's ever heard of. Once they went mainstream, she'd definitely get angry and call them sell-outs, though. =P The music would probably need to have a female lead singer to really catch her attention.

Charna would simply like classical music or instrumentals.

Fyline would like classic and glam rock. =)

Nadya- a tale about what happens to SOME of us when we die.

Currently: Nadya is awake and asking more relevant questions.

Interesting! Well, I haven't asked my characters, but lemme take a guess:

Minerva: Avril Lavigne, Hilary Duff, Jessica and Ashley Simpson, maybe some Britney

Alice: Voltaire (*lol*), Queen, and some J-Pop

Ian: Oooh, that's a tough one. Ian seems like the kind of guy that likes most everything.

And for a future comic I'm writing:

Kaoru: MCR, System of a Down, Queen, Green Day... He loves all kinds of rock and metal.
