Yahtzee nails one.

Snide reviewer Yahtzee of The Escapist typically reviews video games. And typically he roasts them with sarcasm and cutting remarks for the rest of us to enjoy. I've previously called him out for being too mean to some perfectly good games, but when it comes to reviewing gaming webcomics, the man simply cannot be mean enough.

Not safe for work. And stop the video after his review, unless you want to see some really awful ads.

I think Yahtzee nailed this one. In my opinion, the world does not need any more gamer comics. The ones we do have are either ripping each other off, using trite videogame references as comedy ("The cake is a lie"), or are just so poorly made that they're not worth reading. And I'm especially hoping some eager young kids watch this and have second thoughts about making a sprite comic.

(for the record, I do think there are a small handful of worthwhile gaming comics)

I saw that literally right before I saw the topic.
I thought it was hilariously accurate. Also, I liked the crack at comic genesis, DrunkDuck represent!!

*snerk* You know, pretty much everything he says is true for webcomics that aren't gaming webcomics, too - especially that bit at the end about drama. But then again, the Internet is pretty much the Mecca of melodrama, so... ;P

This time I disagree with Yahtzee. There should be more gaming webcomics!

Is what I would say if I was suddenly an idiot.
Hey buddy, you should be a Russian Cosmonaut, and here's why.

Dramatastic.

Anyways, that was amazing and basically correct in every way. I love his reference to die-hard fans and comic genesis and people's negativity towards criticism.
Updates Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday's (depends).

Yahtzee pretty much summed up my opinion of gaming comics, but in a much meaner/funnier manner.

He put particular attention on describing the recent CAD storyline. Also the CAD forums went down for a short time after this was posted...hm...

He is basically a "shock jock" and everything he says should be taken with a grain of salt. If you want journalistic integrity (which I doubt he does), you need to at least give props where props are do.

But I guess it's just cool to hate things RUMPH RUMPH HARUMPH

Word. :)

Sure, I guess you could call him mean, but you can't deny that almost everything he said about gaming comics is right on.

Yahtzee maybe a snarky little bastard but he's usually right and he was right about the state of gamer comics.

...or maybe I'm just saying this because I saw a picture of him and I think he's cute and I'm a sucker for accents of many flavors. ^_^; *hides in corner for shame*

I do kind of feel like gaming comics aren't any nearer the bottom of the barrel than other kinds of comics. I'm definitely no authority, but I've seen the same proportions of poorly drawn, poorly written, and poorly conceived comics in many genres, and I also find that most genres overlap so much anyway that sometimes the distinction is difficult to make. People are welcome to (and probably will) disagree, but I believe Yahtzee's specific anger toward gaming comics exists because he's interested the gaming community, not because the lowest common denominator in gaming comics is any worse than the lowest common denominator in autobiographical comics or self-referential comics.

I guess I could summarize the way I feel a lot faster: he's right, and I feel the scope of his argument applies equally to all webcomics.
