Why are you doing a webcomic?

So, why do you make your webcomic? What's the thing that keeps you making new pages, or start doing a webcomic in the first place?

For me, I guess I just like drawing, and comics are something I've enjoyed reading and making since I was 9 or somethin. Also, this may sound slightly naíve, but I wanna make something that'll make people smile, or at least get a positive feeling.

As for why I started a webcomic, well, it was sorta spontaneous. Spur-of-the-moment, y'know?

Because my art used to suck....like REALLY suck. So, you join a place like this and people tell you why your art sucks (as opposed to DA). Plus, it forces me to practice. If I was just doing this for myself, I'd eventually get bored of it. But, now that I have an audience that shows up once a week to see if my stuff has stopped sucking yet, I have a reason to keep working. After all, if I just posted a note on the comic today that said "I quit; see ya later" then I would have wasted a lot of people's time (I can't say for certain whether or not any of them actually stick around for the story...so they may not care at all that I've quit, except for that they shouldn't have faved in the first place if it was going nowhere).
Anyway, my art now sucks less. In fact, I think it sucks less every time I finish a chapter. So I can hang my hat on that if nothing else.
And that's about all I've got to say on that.

Well, I don't quite completely agree with NickGuy that I'm worthless without this. But I do agree that the sequential comic format is my favorite format to tell stories.

For me, I tried going the syndication route for years and got frustrated to the point where I barely drew anything for about 3 years.

I started my webcomic because it provided a creative outlet as well as a way of sharing my art and creativity with others.

Making a living off of my work has become secondary to just producing good work that others connect with.

I'm in a somewhat similar vein as NickGuy. I've been drawing since I was in elementary school so it's a pretty big hobby of mine that I can't just abandon, and I'm honestly at a loss when I'm not doing sequentials. When I'm not drawing comics, I really have no idea what to draw. So that's what I do.

I put 'em on the web because what else am I going to do with them? :)

I started doing webcomics as a therapy. Because back when I was younger I was totally depressed and wanted to kill myself and I needed an outlet for all my angst. Hence, Brood Knight was born.

But for some reason, all the anger and all the hate and all the negativity tends to fade away as your eyes open little by little. As you learn to question your reality and develop a deeper understanding of how the world works. As you learn that you are not a statistic. That you are not a useless eater. That you are not a carbon footprint emitter. That you aren't just some random brew of chemicals that so happened to just happen because it just happened.

There seems to have less and less room for negativity the more you become aware of the fact that you are a spiritual being made in the image and likeness of the creator of the universe. You start to wonder what is really there to be depressed about and think that its so stupid to be depressed afterall.

Nowadays, the reason I do webcomics is because I think that webcomics are a medium to help unlock people's minds.

I firmly believe that thats the reason why I was put on this planet. I firmly believe that thats the reason why I was born in the first place. To play a part in unlocking people's minds.

Whether or not you agree with my positions or any opinion or position of any of my characters on certain political and spiritual issues that I do tend to throw in my comic (MAG-ISA), at least it will get you to think.

NOW UPDATING!!!

I like sharing my stories with people and drawing, and i picked the web because despite nickguy's delusions of big-name publishers, you can actually be pretty well-known here and have more people reading your comic on a daily basis then awesome comics like invincible sell in a month. (of course kirkmans rolling in the dough though)

And also to improve my art and storywriting, what's that quote... uummm " To look upon ones self honestly requires great courage."
but basically to apply that principle to see my art wasn't that great and needed improving.

I choose the web because it's easy to get your comic strip out to people and I choose comic strip because it's some kind of voodoo magic: it's basic and powerful yet capable of great sophistication.

That's if you can do it right - I've wrestled with it for a long time, but I tell myself "some day I'll own that sucker".

For Used Books, I drew this story for my friends, but we were being separated spatially, so my brother suggested I upload it.

For Gelotology, it's because my mom was disappointed when I told her I was drawing a comic, and she found out that it wasn't like the "funnies" I drew growing up. Plus, I needed an outlet for my ridiculousness.

I started drawing Splash Damage because the writer is my best friend and we felt we should collaborate on something. I also went through with it because I feel like I don't draw enough and the comic would keep me drawing.

I continue to make the comic because I'm actually afraid of the reputation that would arise if I stopped or updated late all the time. People have nothing good to say about people who update late all the time (*koff koff Scott Ramsoomair koff*). It's also super cool to say that you run a webcomic.

I really wanted to get my stories to get out there, and due the lack of a big comic culture in my country, I thought that the web was the best thing to do.

What else can I say? I really love to write, I really love draw, I really like mess around with Photoshop, Poser, Cinema and all the programs that I use to do my stuff, and I felt in love with the idea of people actually LIKING something that I love to do...

There is also the glory and fame that comes with be a Internet celebrity...")

I do webcomics because printing comics is really fucking expensive.

Okay, I'm kidding. (Only sort of)

This is all tied to my Dad giving me the Sunday Funnies when I was a kid. I've been drawing comics since I was in diapers pretty much. At this point in my life it comes as naturally as waking up, walking, or making a bowel movement. (Not unlike some of my earlier posts on here....rimshot)

But yeah, drawing comics helps me relax. It gives me great personal satisfaction whenever I finish a page. And, it's always nice to read the responses of people who have seen my work. Good, bad, confused, whatever. It's all good. Just knowing that somebody bothered to read it is usually enough for me.

I also maintain the hope (However delusional it may be) that some day I'll be so good at making comics that somebody will actually pay me money to do so.

I'm sure that these statements apply to practically everyone on this site and in this forum.

Nope, I dont hold that delusional hope.
I hold the even more delusional belief that I already am that good, and someone will start paying me to draw cartoon animals any second now....any second...come on....still waitin...

For the attention, pretty much. ;)

No one's ever going to pay me for doing this unless I discover a magical potion of creative improvement, but people will say nice things about it, and nice as money would be, I'll settle. ^_^

Honestly, it's a hobby I have been doing subconsciously. I never really mean to do comics, but as I got into high school, it felt like a waste of time. I started to doodle when the teacher talks, and soon I found myself a fun thing to do. I went from simple pictures, to a story with images. Then, I decided to go into digital editing. It's a small thing that grew into something I enjoy. Sure, it's nice to see that other people read and enjoy my work. However, I did it because I'm bored. Not for any special purpose.

I figure that if I can make the comic as long as I possibly can, then my life will be complete. Just doing one to two pages a week will soon add up. Then when I'm old, I'll fell like I did something with my life other than spending +30 years of my life gaming.

My comics weren't originally for the web lol. I'm making comics because I want to get them published. I just put them on here because I like to get people's opinions on them and be told what I'm doing right or wrong and how to improve. :)

It keeps me going, keeps me drawing.
Before I starting putting my comics online, I'd draw in spurts, but never get anything done. I'd redo the same pages over and over, and maybe once a year I could finish a short story.
Now that I have an update schedule, I have a routine. I have something to keep me drawing every single day. And I've gotten a lot better for it. Stories move forward. Art gets better.
While I like being in print, too, it's a bit more stressful. With webcomics, I feel the drive to do them, without "OMG, if I don't make this deadline my publisher is going to chuck me out on my ass and this story will never get read!"

"Why am I doing a webcomic?"

I could easily write a whole essay on this subject. But I'll try to keep it somewhat short, and somewhat sweet.

As a kid I've always had a big imagination, as you could tell with these names for the action figures I came up with. The stories were pretty cool too. Action figures were definitely a big part of my childhood, because I couldn't draw well, so that's how I expressed myself.

Then after I got into drawing, several years later, I learned that drawing comics is fun! It's kind of like putting those stories I used to play out with action figures, in a book! Except, you create it all yourself, instead of having plastic guys and girls made for you.

The reason why I do one today, is both because of the reason I listed above, and because of my love for comics.

As a kid, I never had the attention span to read comic books, because the confusing wording, and I just liked to look at the pictures. But as I grew older (14, actually, so not too long ago). I learned that comic books are cool! So I got into reading them, and wanted to create one of my own. I had previously made some really crappy comic books with sonic-rip offs, and well. Over the years, I changed a bunch of stuff around.

So, to simply put it.

I love comics.

That is why.

interesting to see what keeps others updating.

For me, I want to prove to myself that I can follow through and create a good story, beginning, middle and end (END is the most important part). My sister seems to think I can't follow through on anything... when I started Misfit Assassins I was like, "wanna read my comic?" and she was like, 'what's the point, you'll give up halfway through." Which I... did for a while.

But The Optimist is different, I swear!! I sincerely want to get better, but mostly I want people to hear what I have to say. I want to be heard!!!!!!

And there's nothing quite like the joy of having people care about your characters. Of having people notice the little clues you left behind and predicting things. Knowing that people actually THINK about my comic (not that I think it keeps them up late at night) is a trip and a half.

There are a lot of different reasons why I do internet cartoons. One was because the college newspaper I did my cartoons for for years went down the shitter, so I quit and needed a new outlet for comics. Another is because I'm a highly opinionated individual and cartoons are my way of showing that. Most importantly, however, is that I enjoy making comics, no matter what the format. Hell, I have three comics on Drunk Duck that are completely different, and I plan on making more eventually.
