Why are Sonic sprite comics so abundant?

Not saying Sonic is bad or anything, but there seems to be a disproportionate amount of Sonic comics out there. Am I imagining it, or is there something that makes it super appealing?

I hope you don't mind, this is more of a "comic discussion" kind of thing, so I'm moving it to the Comic Discussion section. I think it will get a better response there.
My response, though? If there are so many Sonic sprite comics right now, it's probably because people are trying to step away from Mega Man sprite comics, which were the most comic sprite comic earlier.

Sprite comics are mostly done as fan tributes, so the subject matter is weighted in video game fandom (specifically games with easy to rip/modify graphics). Sonic has quite a following in the group of people who tend to do sprite comics (or vice versa).
It probably is mostly related to ebb and flow of fads. (What Hawk said.) There will always be one type of whatever that is more abundant. You could hurt your brain trying to rationalize why certain things are more popular/abundant than others. ;)

I assume it is mainly because they are easy and quick to do. The author wants to tell a story with their favorite game character and the art is already completed making the comic creation something like a fun doll house thing. Often the author is very young and is kinda crappy at art so doing a sprite comic is a way of doing comics anyway.
I think there are probably more pokemon spritecomics, but i could be wrong.

Popular fandom, easy comic style.
The main reason why a notable lot of people choose to make sprite comics, is simply because it doesn't require too much work and it's easy enough for anyone to do. Combine that with something that's got mainstream popularity, like Sonic does, and the fact that it's got a long past as sprite-based games.
With a long story of sprite-based games, Sonic sprites are really easy to come across. And since the Sonic fanbase is such a large one, there's always another person downloading one sprite template or another, with the possible goal of making a comic out of it.
So.. simplicity, availability and fandom. Three things which probably have a lot to say about the reason why there are so many Sonic sprite comics. Same thing can be said about other Ssrite comics, as well, such as those with Final Fantasy sprites, Megaman sprites or Pokemon sprites.

I pretty much have to agree with Vega. I think it's 90% what's easy and available over anything else. The fandom seems to stem from the sprites and sprite comics more than it starts them. In my experience it always seemed like a lot of those kids who make somic/ megaman /etc. comics, either have never played the original games or are at best, vaguely familiar with them or the tv series they had back in the early 90's. Otherwise, I think some of them might have a bit more appreciation of good ol' Doc Robotnik in their stories.

I've been wondering that for over a year now... I really don't see why it's so popular, it seems more of a childs game, anyone under 10. But I see people in their twenties making Sonic comics.

These are characters from games that came out before most spriters were even born. That's why I find the avid fandom of the characters, not just the use of the artwork, a little strange.
When you have music or movie fandom from stuff that's decades old, that's more understandable because music is always on the radio and the same with old TV shows on TV etc. But games are different, there's more effort involved in getting hold of the titles...
I bet there must have been a specific cause for the sonic loving, like those shitty sonic cartoons that were done, or those bad sonic games that get released all the time creating interest in the early better spritey versions, or Gen-X'ers and Gen-Y'ers who played the originals and loved them creating the original fan interest and bringing the original games back through emulations so the spriters feed off of that...
Probably ALL of that plus new spriters seeing Sonic sprite comics already up and copying it.

WalrusIf there are 20 year olds doing it, maybe it's because they played the game when they were little kids?

Just for the ten million easily amusing jokes you could make about the fact that everyone in your party almost always died of dysentery the moment you started that would be at the very least a more interesting comic than sonic.
Sadly, I don't have the time to do it.

It's the ease. If it wasn't for my paranoia of getting sued by a game company, I'd probably have done a sprite comic. Instead I went with the safer option of doing stick figures in MSPaint. So in a way, my paranoia makes me slightly more original. Though not by a whole lot.
A lot of people have no skill at drawing and little time or patience to try and get better.
That's the only reason any type of sprite comic becomes popular.

Someone make a "Splatterhouse" sprite comic. It would be good publicity for the new game.

Splatterhouse the comic would rule!
I think people need to stop making soic sprite comics.
There are too many already.
How many worthwhile stories are there to be told about a bloody blue hedgehog and his multi-tailed gay fox friend?
Why not just invent a new character? Or use a character that has at elast had a decent computer game in the last decade!

People are tired of Sonic bad games, there is a good amount of poses for every main character. That's what I think.

Basically what Eduds said, people are tired of the direction Sega is taking with Sonic and friends, so little 12-year old kids take the ripped sprite sheets and mutate Sonic in their image.

I thought twelve-year-olds were the only ones left who could possibly like the new Sonic games.
(I recently found out that Sonic Team is basically forced to work on new Sonic games against their will, without any real drive or desire to. That's...really depressing. Especially with little kids who probably play all this new crap without having played the old and thinking THIS is the essence of Sonic, and older folks like me (:B) who still enjoys the originals immensely. New games in that style would do well as WiiWare, but noooo.)

Run fast, get rings, jump on bad guys, look cool.
How anyone could take a winning formula like that and still screw it up everytime is beyond me!
