*A Dragon Warrior/Quest Anthology for the DS. (like, the early NES 1-3.)

Actually Square Enix is working on remakes for DQ IV through VI.

Also,

I would like for the Wii and the DS to be wiped from the face of the earth

You fail good sir.

:D

Okay, if they make a Dragon Warrior ANYTHING, for ANY system, I would play it.

And sorry, but Nintendo made me cry when it came out with both of those systems, and these forums have been my first chance to really rant. The novelty will wear off eventually, though.

Shplane, you really need to just let it go.

umm id have to say any arcade game where you stand in one place and shoot at the screen (like house of the dead) would be good for the wii.

If they ever find a way to allow people to calibrate the IR sensitivity on the controller, then those games will seem like a good idea. As it is, I'm already going to pass on Ghost Squad since it will be unplayable on my TV (screen's too big). Thankfully, I can still get my light gun (if you can even call them that, anymore) fix on other systems.

Personally, I'd rather see new games come out than remakes of older games.

I actually heard somewhere that a Sega representative at E3 said that Ghost Squad would probably have a calibration feature. I had the same exact concern, so hopefully that's true.

And I agree, new games are better than remakes, especially in the case of DS and Wii.

The calibration function works within the limits of the controller, unfortunately. There is no software solution which allows the controller to detect the IR sensor bar outside its range. Since I use a projector, I'm SOL on that one. My living room isn't big enough for me to stand that far from the sensor bar.

Wait, so a "shoot at the corners" calibration wouldn't work? I'm gonna have to think about this one... I hope to eventually use a projector, myself.

Shooting at the corners would work, assuming both corners are within the range of the IR sensor on your wii-mote. They aren't on my setup. Basically, for the calibration method to work, the sensor range of the remote has to encompass the entirety of your TV screen. You can check the range in the system setup on the screen where you set the sensitivity. I'm pretty sure Sega knows about this problem, though, hence they have crosshairs in the game for people who can't get the calibration to work with their controllers. I prefer the arcade experience, though, to cheating.

I realized something interesting on the "remake" front the other day. As I'm sure several of you are aware, Squenix did a major overhaul/rerelease of Final Fantasy III, where they kept the core gameplay but completely revamped every aspect of the visuals. Anyway, I realized that the graphics were at least Final Fantasy VII quality, if not better (or at the very least, better utilized). The exception, of course, is that the DS game pack is too small, memory-wise, to hold all of the cut scenes (which, let's be honest, was a huge part of the game.) So a proper re-release is out of the question; at best they could fit the game on the pack and maybe two of the cutscenes.

But I also have another product: The Max Media Player. Essentially it's a $40 device that turns my DS into an MP3/video player. The video quality's not great, but I can fit a few episodes of MST3K on that bad boy if I ever need it. Anyway, the actual "player" part of it is a standard DS pack, but the memory part of it (where you put the movies and songs) is actually a DS Option Pack that fits into the GBA port.

So, as you can imagine, if the GBA port is utilized as a sort of "video hole" to store complex videos for use with games. The Cut-Scene heavy FF series is the obvious example for its use, but there's a huge potential there if game developers are willing to implement it.

There are two versions I've seen. The one with the 4GB hard drive retails at $180, so if you got that for $40, you must have gotten a REALLY good deal. I wouldn't consider it all that cost effective for game studios, however. The other version is simply a dock that you hook up compact flash cards to. It's cheaper, but then you're still paying for the compact flash card and the converter. In both cases, it's not cost effective for a developer. It would more than double the printing costs of the game. Unless you like paying $60 for a DS game, I wouldn't count on them ever adapting that for game use. It's more likely they would simply expand the storage capacity of the existing DS cards. Typically the cartridge capacity will go up over the lifespan of the system, so we could potentially see 2Gb (250MB) or even 4Gb (500MB) DS cartridges in the future. Compression also plays a bit of a role and compression rates on video now are better than they were on the PSX.

Well, not to mention the fact that when you'd also be decreasing the size of the video as well... one screen of the DS really isn't that large. I have a storage device for my DS (it's a shady piece of equipment from Hong Kong built for Mp3, video, homebrew, and even piracy if you want to take it that far). I took a roughly 150mb video file of an episode of The Office and converted it to DS screen size at high quality and it ended up being around 32mb (for about 22 minutes of high-quality video).

Anyway, even with compression involved, you'd still probably be hard-pressed to fit all of FF7 in. It's a shame, too... technically the DS is actually more powerful and it could have improved on FF7's cruddy textureless map-mode characters. I would recommend they remove that obnoxious whore Yuffie to save space, but few would agree with me.

Square-Enix is turning all the SNES FF games into 3D (they're far along with FF4) so I'm sure by the time they get around to raping FF7, there will be a new handheld or at least more storage space in a cartridge like Isukun was saying. That or they could put it on the PSP, I guess.

totally agree.

the extra memory thing for the GBA slot is a good idea. or they could release it on seperate cartridges in the case of final fantasy 7. like, one cart would have to be played first, because there's a password that you get at the end of the first cart that you have to use to be able to play cart 2. that would prevent cheaters quite well.

the thing i was glad about in final fantasy 7 is that yuffie was an optional character. unfortunately, she's not optional in advent children. :(
I once tried to smoke lettuce. It rocked!!

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?

It would actually only be a minor decrease in size. The video on the PSX FF games wasn't running at full SD resolution. 256x192 isn't a huge leap down from 320x240.

I think expecting any of the FF's from Sony systems to appear on a Nintendo system at this point is still pretty unrealistic.

There is a reason you don't see too many multi-cartridge games. CD's are a dime a dozen, not so with custom solid state ROM carts with built in flash memory.

Apparently, 2Gb cartridges already exist for the DS, too.

Still, even if specific games like FF7 aren't suitable for this sort of thing, I think there's a lot of potential in simple memory expansion features via the expansion port. At the very least I'd like to see more games take advantage of the rumble pack; right now all it's doing for me is the cut scenes on Metroid Prime (that's right, it doesn't even rumble during gameplay), and in Elite Beat Agents. Seems like a fairly simple addition, and as long as you don't make it a requirement for gameplay function (since sometimes we all like to squeeze our batteries for every drop they have), it's always nice to have options.
