I've been having a huge debate with myself on an upcoming project. I can't decide whether or not to have my new comic in color or gray scale. I want it to be visually appealing and I believe coloring helps out a bit. However, I need to have production come out fast. I don't want to spend hours on one page.

So again does color enhance a comic or no? I would love opinions on this.

There are no bones about it Roma; colour is more appealing instantly to many more people.

But if your comic art looks really good you should retain people however you do it.

I should think that it depends on the feel of your comic. Both can work. Some work better grayscale than they do in colour. And vice versa ;)

Both can work yes, but for me it's black & white! I can't really make a choice between color & black-white, but when it B&W or Grayscale I totally go for just B&W. It makes much more interesting art.

I second this.

If you want to capture the eye instantly, good coloring will do so better than b/w. But if people are going to spend more than a few seconds making their evaluation of your comic, then color isn't as big of factor as some other things... like layout, flow, dynamic-ness-atude, contrast, inking, etc...

Is color going to enhance your product in YOUR eyes? If yes, then... can you color in the time you allot for yourself? If you get 2 YESs, then color. If you get 1 NO, then don't color.

I know this probably fits in a whole new topic but seeing that it's related, what do you use to do color a manga in a gray scale in the style of mangas like Bleach or Naruto?

Janen- Most people use Photoshop, but if you can afford Copic markers and are good with them, then that's good too.

Copic markers, I'll look them up. Returning to the topic, yeah colors attract but on the other hand don't forget all the effects you can create with gray scale that are sometimes hindered by color.

Hmmm, good point. Personally, I love colored comics and mangas and a few B&W ones. But there is the fact that I'd have to sacrifice my sanity in an effort to get colored pages out at a high rate. So I guess its grayscale.

So while I'm at it. does anyone know of a book, tutorial or reference related to B&W illustration?
