In fact my friends find it amazing I can pick up a random manga they've read, flip to a page, and peg every character personality exactly based on looks(despite never seeing it before).
It's not amazing, it's just all manga follow the same formula. There are no more originals being made- just re-hashes. But i love it all the same.
Berserk doesn't do that, and neither does Osamu Tezuka's work. But yeah, those are exceptions.

EVERYONE in "Fist of the North Star".
I agree with you there, though I still think Minmei is more dangerous than all of those characters put together. :)

Oh, she IS, I just try to pretend she was never associated with my childhood memories of Robotech. Alas, to no avail. :D And at least with Fist of the North Star, I can actually find it so intense that's it's "stupid" funny. :D

And Winry... Yeah, wtf happened to her (anime, I never read manga). I thought she'd be an important character or something. I watched the entire series to find out that she just there so the hero has somebody to dump.
Winry was created to confirm that Al & Ed weren't boning each other.

There are others, as well, but you have to keep in mind that anime and manga in the West is marketed towards certain expectations. People expect them to represent certain cliches story elements and presentation styles, so your more original stuff often doesn't leave Japan. There is actually quite a bit of anime and manga that I've seen and read that is like nothing else on the market over there, but you aren't going to find it at your local Borders.

Fuyuki from Minami-ke: Okawari. His presence was like hot steaming gravy slightly tolerable ice cream.

I'm currently re-watching Bleach (shounen anime - my only weakness!), and I have to say - Kon. Sheesh - he started out as a character with a somewhat interesting backstory and potential for conflict, and after three episodes, he was reduced to Irritating Stuffed Animal Sidekick, whose modus operandi is to scream and whine and cry as much as possible, only to be ignored. Every damned time.
He adds absolutely nothing to the story. He's not even all that cute.

The thing with Bleach is just as soon as they get the story moving a little, they have to stop to tell some assholes origin story, and then we never hear from that character again for another 20 episodes or so.

I hate Sakura from Naruto. She's hopelessly chasing the super ninja emo and pushing away the guy who actually does like her-- huge forehead and all.
I also hated Misa from Death Note, because of her terrible dub. She was an important and interesting character, but anyone with a bad dub can ruin a show.

Well, to be fair, that was sort of a running joke in Death Note - L was a sugar-freak, Mello chomped chocolate and Near played with toys all the time.

Does Mello ever finish a single candy bar? It's like he just has them so he can dramatically take a single bite out of them after unwrapping them, and then just tosses them out. What a supreme waist of good German chocolate!

I don't know if it's shown that he finishes a candy bar (maybe he does in the manga - I haven't read it), but there's a lot of discarded wrappers lying around in a couple of episodes, so I assume he does.

I absolutely hate characters who don't finish their food. Star Trek Voyager is supremely guilty of this... but then it's not a cartoon.
Anime makes me happy cuz the characters are usually gluttons who gobble everything up and tell/show you how satisfying it all was. :D

The anime girls who trick a poor sap into taking them out for "tea", and then they end up ordering and devouring everthing on the damn menu. Mamoru from Sailor Moon must be in debter's prison by now.

Heh - I agree with you there, jalford. While it's less dislike of a character and more dislike of a character stereotype, I dislike those anime girls who act completely shitty towards their love interest (or, indeed, anyone else) and all the while you have the creator behind the scenes going "Look, look, isn't she wonderful?".
It irritates me.

We-ell... I wouldn't call Arlong annoying, really. Sure, I wanted to bash his face in with a frying pan, but that was due to his complete evil rather than any regular annoying traits.
Speaking of annoying OP characters - Wantze was annoying. The ramen-chef on roller-skates, I mean. I'm not really complaining about him being ridiculous (this is One Piece), but he took up quite some time which I don't think was entirely warranted.

Actually, that was one of the things I liked about Arlong. He was completely unlikable. It's one of the biggest problems I had with the censorship in the US version. Kids don't mimic everything they see on TV, just behavior that is presented as being "cool" or without negative consequences. Arlong's character really hammered home the idea that violent, self-centered, and elitist/racist behavior is bad.

Completely agreed on Arlong, isukun. One Piece is actually pretty good at utterly unlikeable characters - Arlong, Crocodile, Bellamy, Enel, etc., etc. And each of those characters definitely get what's coming to them.

The entire cast of characters on Pokemon. Most of the characters on One Piece, their voices are terrible. Light Yagami... Uh, can't think of anything else for now.

Just out of curiosity, Walrus - have you seen the One Piece dub? In which case yes, I agree; the voices are terrible.
They're better in the original Japanese. Crocodile's Japanese voice actor is perfect.
Light Yagami... Uh, can't think of anything else for now.
I agree, and don't agree, all at the same time. Yagami Light was... irritating and (in his treatment of other people in general, Misa in particular) really off-putting - but on the other hand, I think he was supposed to be, what with being, ever so slightly, a psychopath and all. :P

I never liked the rabbit man in rozen maiden (but that's somewhat my fault as i never figured out his significance), tsuruya from the melancholy of suzumiya haruhi (no reason, i just really wanted her skull to implode when i saw her), the penguin in eva (i never understood why he even existed), and shinji from eva because he was a big fat whiner.
No, disregard all of that. I don't watch anime.
