Hey, when did you start your comic?
When did you create your characters?
What is your comic's birthday???
What is your comic history???
The inestimable beast that is James Riot is celebrating the 4th birthday of his brilliant comic The Path , and that got me thinking about this subject.
--------------------------------
For me... I'm not too sure.
Pinky TA started out as a regular comic on Drunk Duck in early 2004.
The comic was created in 1997-98 though... With nothing posted on the net till 2000. Then she just hung around in a few disjointed pages and a lot of unrelated artwork on the web till I finally moved away from just posting artwork and decided to go seriously into comic stuff instead!
I signed up for a DD account in 2003... and a keenspace account too. The DD membership came through fast! But Then I lost my nerve and let it lapse till 2004.
I'm ot sure what the actual birthday of the comic would be... But when I look back on all I've done since I created the thing, and it doesn't seem like I've got that much to show for it. -_-
---------------------------------
Anyway, now that I've done so, why don't you share your boring origin stories too?? :)

The current version of Crazy Duck started January 1, 2007, but I like to count the original version as the start, which was August 11, 2003, I think. So it just turned seven a week or so ago.
I was 14 and just wanted to try a comic focusing on humans instead of talking animals.. So I made Crazy Duck. I started drawing characters then came up with the general idea... they all work in a fast food restaurant. Then a few strips in, the story mutated into the semi-elaborate-really-long-story it is now.
Drunk Duck crashed in... 2005? 2006? I can't remember exactly, but you might Ozone. Anyway, everyone lost their comics and their sites and Drunk Duck was kind of gone for a while and then I ended up not coming back for even longer once it was back. So I finally returned to webcomics and Drunk Duck at the beginning of 2007, and decided to start Crazy Duck over because my art had improved and I'd polished the story into something much better. Not to mention I was going to have re-upload everything anyway.
And that's it!

Hey, when did you start your comic?
I started "The Legends" back in early 2010
When did you create your characters?
heh, sometime in early 2009, I think.
What is your comic's birthday???
March 9th
What is your comic history???
Well, I made a comic called "HardKORE Legends" and posted it up on Lulu.com in 2009. After I read through it I thought it was bad and decided to cancel the comic I was working on remake it into a webcomic.

This is an interesting topic; got me thinking. :D
When did you start your comic?
I started thinking about it early last year. I've always been a fan of true crime tv and novels as well as mystery and suspence. After I read John Sanford's "Dark of the Moon" (he's a great author!) I really wanted to do a crime/mystery comic.
When did you create your characters?
I plan things, but I don't plan them with great specificity, haha. I'd say 2/3 of my cast were thought of along the way when the comic already started xD. I think James, Ophelia, and Marcello were the only characters that I knew for sure were going to have big parts in the story before I drew the first page. And the Rose Killer too, of course. Parker was the biggest after-thought of them all, haha. But he's become useful to me in telling the story and making it more interesting I think.
What is your comic's birthday???
2/1/2009 (6 days before my birthday! xD)
What is your comic history???
If it's webcomics in general, then that would go back to like five years ago when I was 15. My first one was a gag comic that lasted awhile but didn't really go anywhere. I had so many little comic projects between that one and The Rose Killer that I don't even remember them all @_@ But The Rose Killer is definately my first serious attempt at a webcomic.
Hmmm, that was fun the think about :D

Hey, when did you start your comic?
Wolf was started sometime in September 2006.
Without Moonlight, was started sometime in April 2010
When did you create your characters?
Wolf's main characters had been created as early as 2005.
Without Moonlight's characters have been around in my head in various shapes and forms as early as 1995 (yes, really). But their final form was set pretty much in early summer 2010. :)
What is your comic's birthday???
I'll consider that to be the day I made available for everyone to see the comic's very first page...
So October 2006 for Wolf, and July 21, 2010 for Without Moonlight.
What is your comic history???
I'm not sure what you are asking by this... if you mean my history in making comics, the earliest ones were made in school books for the amusement of myself and my friends in boring lessons and free periods... so that would be around 1992 onwards. My first real attempt at making comics was around 2000 but it was just strips for my own personal venting. And sometime around 2005 I doodled some characters I had no story for nor were fitting for any of the books/stories I was writing, so I left them in my scrapbooks...
And then Wolf began, which was never intended to be finished, but I stumbled across DD and... you know the rest. :p

When did you start your comic?
In December of 2008 it began.
When did you create your characters?
Well, Bear was a character that I had laying around in my sketchbook for a number of years, but I didn't know what to do with him. Duncan was created basically because I knew I needed a sidekick of some sort for bear. But it took a bit before I settled on making him a Yo-Yo wielding rabbit. Originally he was going to be a machine gun toting Owl. :) Most of the other characters have just been created as the story has progressed.
When is your comic's birthday?
Dec 28th 2008? I think.
What is your comic's history.
Hmmm... I have been cartooning since I was a kid, and tried many years for syndication. But that failed and I always continued making comics for my friends. But I realized I had the most fun creating long form stories, and thought zombies were great fodder for comics. But I knew I didn't wanna just do the same human survivors zombie story. So one day while on the internet I stumbled across a forum that asked the question, "Who would win in a fight between a Bear VS. a Zombie?" And with that one little question an entire story just starting flowing out of my brain onto paper. :) The fact that I came up with such an epic an grand story out of such a silly question, boggles my mind. :)
And if any of my readers are thinking that it doesn't seem all that grand or epic yet, that's because you don't know how it ends. :) This story is waaaay bigger than just a zombie apocalypse story with animals. Just you wait and see. :)

Hey, when did you start your comic?
I started my comic, Ryu's Krew, back in February of 2008. That was with the very first version, and that is when I consider it started.
ozoneocean
When did you create your characters?
Draycho and Archound were also created in February 2008, along with a bird character and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle look alike, all together with Ryu to form the team of Super police. As for Ryu himself, he was created back in May of 2007, and back then, he was a Sonic-look alike. A hedge wolf. Which is why my name is that (note to everybody: he is no longer a hedge wolf lmfao)
ozoneocean
What is your comic's birthday???
I still consider February to be the birthday month of the Krew. I would say the 7th or so. I do not have an actual date, but I know it's definitely around there.
ozoneocean
What is your comic history???
The base idea for Ryu's Krew was based on the game Crackdown. I thought that having a team of super-police that are all talking animals would be pretty awesome. I eventually dropped the bird & turtle, leaving Draycho/Archound/Ryu. Not to keep making any room, but after multiple failures throughout the past two years, many, many frustrations. And many attempts to find a good style, I have finally found what I was looking for. My comic has been remade about 8 or 9 times. The comic means so much to me, and I just want to share/inspire people with my story.

Air Raid Robertson
at 4:51PM, Aug. 21, 2010
When did I start my webcomic?
I began working on Air Raid Robertson in February of 2009. I didn't begin posting it on the web until May of the same year though.
When did you create the characters?
Pretty much immediately before I started doing comic pages. I only spent a day or two designing the characters before I drafted their first storyline. I figured that it would be better to flesh out a backstory once I got comfortable with drawing and writing them.
When is your comic's birthday?
The first one was posted on May 7, 2009 I think. That's as good a birthday as any other.
What is your comic's history?
I created the characters when I was thinking about how I could make a mark as a webcomics artist. I had already decided that following the format of Sunday newspaper comics would be suitable to a web presence since I wasn't planning on updating more than once a week. I was intent on doing something that not too many other webcomics people were already doing. That meant no furries, no fantasy elf quests, and no video game players cracking wise while on the couch.
I was still pondering what to do for my comic strip when I stumbled across an interview with Warren Ellis where he talked about dimestore pulp novels from the 20's and 30's. He mentioned the popularity of pulp stories about aviators. Back in the days of Lindbergh, pilots were heroic pioneers. Of course, since air travel is mundane in this day and age the allure of aviation fiction has receded quite a bit.
This notion made me decide on making my hero a fighter pilot. I figured that there probably weren't too many webcomics out there starring an aviator hero.
I also liked having a pilot hero because that meant that he would be traveling a lot. Air Raid Robertson would be jutting across the world and meeting all sorts of different people and threats. I thought that this would help keep the character fresh for me. There seemed to be an untold number of directions I could take a character like that in.
I decided that it would be a good idea to create a sidekick for my character so he would always have someone to talk to. My work has usually been pretty dialogue driven so I thought it would be better to have a duo. One of my more common themes is to have a somewhat deluded hero with a more sensible sidekick struggling to reign him in. A sort of Don Quixote/Sancho Panza relationship. That ended up being the foundation for Air Raid Robertson and Ridley.
I could go into detail about what motivated my decisions from storyline to storyline, but that would almost certainly be long winded and boring. If someone is actually interested in all of that they can always just look at the comments section under my pages. There isn't really anything I can say that isn't mentioned down there anyways.

Hey, when did you start your comic?
Just over two months ago now!
When did you create your characters?
Neddie is based on a real cat, but I only finalised the character design a couple of days before I started posting my comic here. All the characters so far are variants of Neddie.
What is your comic's birthday???
Twelth of June. I had to go check for the exatct date.
What is your comic history???
Choose your own Nedventure's history is basically that I like drawing cartoon cats and wanted to have a go at doing an interactive comic.
The world it's set in is taken from a project I've been working on for many years, however.

For Used Books...
Hey, when did you start your comic?
It was the middle of January 2007.
When did you create your characters?
For the central characters, it was the beginning of January 2007, basically sketching cartoon/anime personas of my roommates. Most other major characters evolved from background characters.
What is your comic's birthday???
On DD, February 24, 2007
What is your comic history???
It was a not so dark but rainy winter day at the Barboursville Mall. I was passing time with my roommates, chatting and pretty much inspired by our usual crazy exchanges. We pursued Suncoast and chatted about the anime series we had seen together and the "us" characters within them. I mused that my roommates really were characters and would even need to be watered down to be believable. I went so far as brainstorming plotlines and thinking how cool it would be if someone made that into a show.
Then, we went into Borders and I went to the comics section. I picked out the latest volume of Case Closed, finishing my shopping but knowing my friend Gael would be browsing for a few hours. So, my view wandered to the "how to draw comics" stuff. I started thinking about how it would be neat to have a visual of these characters in my head -- since I was fairly sure no one else would draw them for me. I bought both books, went home, and drew some characters along with a few fun traits and histories.
Having read my latest Case Closed and with no more DVD's to watch, I was craving new plotlines, so I put pencil to paper and hurriedly sketched out some rough storyboards for my semi-roommate-based anime. I showed it to my roommates, and it quickly became my hobby to draw a dozen storyboards at a time, and share them with my roommates. It was our cheap form of entertainment.
My brother told me to upload my work. I was very hesitant, but I finally did it if only to have a more permanent place for my stuff. With more eyes on my creations, I decided I needed to try to better myself -- so storyboards evolved into rough comic pages then digitally polished pages and finally digitally colored stuff, and my original three women characters took on their own lives, and a much more detailed world and cast came to be.
For Gelotology...
Hey, when did you start your comic?
Probably when I was 11 or 12, so 16ish years ago.
When did you create your characters?
Not really much of a recurring cast. The recurring male character is essentially my brother. The female was created to have some discussion with.
What is your comic's birthday???

What is your comic history???
I used to draw one panel Farsidesque stuff for my mom when I was a kid. She cherished everything I drew her. So, when I started drawing "a comic" (Used Books), she was really disappointed to find out it wasn't the stuff I used to draw for her. Of course, to make Mom smile, I had to revive my juvenile science humor. (I also needed an outlet for all the stupid science gags that kick around in my head all the time.) I made the premise a science expo and the recurring character my brother due to all the fun I had at science conferences with my parents. -- Also, I wanted to put my masters degree to good use since it apparently can't get me a job. :P

When did you start your comic? January 21st, 2008
When did you create your characters? Ahab, Marcus, and Black Hatter were made before the comic. Everyone else was either done or finalized after it already took run.
What is your comic's birthday??? About 2 weeks prior to actually doing it. I just thought... 'What the hell, why not.'
What is your comic history??? I guess this means my background? Well, on a site called Master Zen Dao, I was a webcomic reviewer for about 2-3 years in a club. We reviewed good, bad, and a thousand mediocre reads, some even on Drunkduck. I know Hero By Night was one of them. Eventually, I got a scanner and tried my hand at doing something based on a story I've been working on forever.
It was called Desperate By Dusk and it was a miserable endeavor that didn't last long. I got bad advice on what to do from the very beginning by a Keenspace Admin. The pages were unrefined, horrid, and faded. Eventually, tech problems shut it down, I lost the username/password and I walked off.
I continued reviewing for a while, but honestly, it was an utterly thankless job. I was bored out of my mind reading crappy 'roommate on a couch' comics. Just endless uncreative mediocrity.
It wasn't until years later when I started looking around on Drunkduck, did I consider getting back in the saddle and trying to overcome my past failure. I started with Schizophrenia Bloom. It wasn't very good really. That got dropped and I've since kept on with what was originally my pet project, Arachnid Goddess. I've been thinking of doing another one for months now.

Hey, when did you start your comic?
I started plotting, planning and writing the script for Shades back in 2003. I contacted Harsho (the first artist to work on it) via the web, and the artwork started in 2004.
When did you create your characters?
As soon as I had the idea for writing a "realistic" super hero story set in the UK, I set about creating the characters and working out their back stories. The actual look of the characters wasn't finalised until later, when I could see the artists' interpretations of my ideas. The first characters/costume designs, therefore, came together in 2004 but, with some of the later ones, we didn't have their appearance finalised until some time last year!
What is your comic's birthday?
Like the Queen, it has more than one! But the first page was posted here at Drunk Duck on 1 August 2007, so that's as good a date as any!
What is your comic history?
2003 - First draft of the script written.
2004 - Harsho Mohan Chattoraj brought on board as artist. Artwork begins (hooray!)
2004 - I joined a small webcomic studio/collective called Midnite Comics and began serialising Shades there.
2005 - Midnite Comics website closes (damn hackers!)
2006 - I created my own website (Broken Voice Comics .
2007 - Shades begins at Drunk Duck (hooray!)
2008 - Harsho has to leave the project with only half completed. Doom, gloom and despair ensue!
2008 - The new art team (E.C. Nickel and Muamal Khairi) join the project. Jubilation and celebratory fireworks all round!
2009 - Ummm ... work continues!
2010 - Artwork is completed and the final pages are posted at Drunk Duck.
2011 - Fame and fortune beckon!

Since I have two currently active comics, I'll just focus on those two.
Hey, when did you start your comic?
-Negligence was started in July 2008. For a while before the comic began, I wanted to create something that paid tribute to Calvin and Hobbes. One day I started doodling some characters in that style, and that's how Drannik and Lizzep came to be. I wanted a world where the kids were almost in charge and living on their own (sort of the modern day Pippi Longstocking), and the only way to pull that off realistically is if the parent were around, but they were a crappy parent. This is where the title came to be.
-Cubicle is much, much older. The version that is up on Drunk Duck now is actually a re-imagined version of an old comic I made way back in 2004. Early last year, I rediscovered the comic and started writing a new script using much of the same elements. Much of the plot elements between the two are the same, but a lot was either expanded or revamped for this current version. When the current Cubicle is near finished, I will put up the old comic as a comparison, but not until then as it does spoil some elements of the current story.
When did you create your characters?
-Drannik and Lizzep were the first characters for Negligence, so they were the first characters. McKinley and the Negligent Guardian came a little bit later. Ojmiz was created several months later, I'd say around September or October of 2008. Jameel and Mischa are the two most recent characters, and they were created sometime in 2009.
-For Cubicle, Glen, Johnny, and the boss (who has yet to be seen) were all created in 2004 for the original comic. Suzy the receptionist, who has appeared very briefly so far in the current comic, was basically part of a throwaway line in the original, so she was an afterthought. Glen's parents didn't come about until the current comic. They weren't even mentioned much in the original. Maddie, the girl Glen spends the most time complaining about life with, was created just for the new comic, so I'd say around March of 2009 for her.
What is your comic's birthday???
-Negligence started appearing online in August of 2008, but didn't pop up on Drunk Duck until nearly a year later.
-Cubicle debuted June 18th, 2010 here.
What is your comic history???
-I've mentioned most of Negligence's history above, but I can expand on it. I originally did these comics for my own website, but since I'm not much of a webpage programmer and the site is a free page I started, there wasn't much room for comics and I was getting no hits. Then, a friend of mine told me about this place, and I moved all my comics, including ones I did years in the past, onto here. I started out making pencil drawings and vectorizing them, but after finding out how they turned out, I switched to pen-and-ink (still vectoring them at the end). After getting Prismacolor grays into the mix, I realized how different the comics looked when I vectored them so they'd keep the grays, compared to the ones where I didn't have to worry about that. Not only that, but I was getting sick of spending lots and lots of money to replace pens, markers, and bristol board, not to mention that I was (and still am) unemployed, so I couldn't afford do this all the time. Then, I bought a tablet, for completely unrelated reasons. I realized I could use that to make my comics instead and not only save me a lot of money, but become more experienced with color and other skills. Now, I've gotten so good with the tablet, that I use it to draw everything. I think I am now officially a digital artist.
-Cubicle had a very rocky start. From the beginning, I wanted this to be a collaborative project, mostly because the script I wrote was way beyond my own drawing capabilities. When you work on your own stuff, you are your own boss, but the same can't be said for collaborations. I had an artist in mind when I was writing the script, and there are some elements in the script that are reminiscent of this person's style. Unfortunately, I knew this person in real life, and they were very much a flake, so that person was out almost immediately. I posted a listing here on the Community Project board last year, and had two different people respond to me through that. The first person, I wasn't sure if they were serious or not, because once I showed the guy the script, he disappeared. His style wasn't representative of what I wanted anyway. The second person was very interested in doing this, and damn near became the final artist, but here's how I knew this script was good: when your script triggers someone else's depression, you know you're got a damn depressing script. I was about ready to give up when suddenly I got a PQ from Genejoke asking if I was still searching for an artist. I said yes, sent him the script, and that's how Cubicle came to be.
Whew, what a mouthful.

Hey, when did you start your comic? Unlimited Evil was started around 1995-1996, but not posted online until February, 2010.
When did you create your characters? I first created the main characters, The Super Mutant-Nine way back in 1992. The rest of the cast came later in various years until the present.
What is your comic's birthday??? Unlimited Evil was begun on DD February 17, 2010
What is your comic history??? Unlimited Evil is actually something of a stand alone crossover of sorts featuring a variety of characters from my comics universe that have been previously featured in a number of different comics that I made for myself from 1992-present. So, it's kind of in the middle of the story with some allusions to past issues on some of the pages in the first chapter, but I'm trying to make it more accessible as the story goes on since there is no possible way that I can ever post the past comics due to the way in which I created them. I didn't think ahead and I drew them in a book format with art on the front and back of every page, so it makes them impossible to scan. The art an dialog sucks horribly anyway, so it's probably a good thing that they're unscanable. Anyway, basically the idea for the SM9 came about as something of a cross between X-Men and the TMNT, i.e. mutant animals with extra super-powers. A lot of the older comics were standard, "villain of the month" and "guest hero team-up" type of stories, and then I decided to try my hand at a full on epic event type story that will have lasting repercussions in the future. Oh and I decided to do it as my jump into the webcomics scene, so here it is! LOL!

Hey, when did you start your comic?
- MAG-ISA was started back in 2007. Brood Knight started as early as 1998.
When did you create your characters?
- Same thing when the comic started. However depending on modifications to the plotlines, new characters had to be added.
What is your comic's birthday???
- On drunkduck, its 08-31-2007 for MAG-ISA. Brood Knight was back in 2003 when drunkduck was just beginning. It was one of the few pioneering comics on this site.
What is your comic history???
- Brood Knight had a long and colorful history. I started it all out with no particular plot in mind. No beginning. No end in sight. If something came into my head, that was it. Period. I didnt hesitate to introduce new characters. They kept coming and coming and coming. I was just this angsty teenager (with legitimate reason... I'd still say that today as a man in my late 20s) and this comic was like therapy.
- MAG-ISA was the comic that came into being as soon as I suddenly started "waking up" and learning how the world really works. That was when I started caring about politics and spirituality... then I channelled all that energy into making a comic. I didn't know what to name that comic initially. I decided to call it MAG-ISA because that is Tagalog for "to be alone" and it is a consistency on alot of characters in that comic. Main character is Filipino so... why not use a Filipino term for "to be alone"?
As of now though, I feel a little confused about spirituality. No matter how much I dig and research this, it seems that the more I keep getting confused. I know there is more to human existence than just being a physical body. However I'm not sure if we reincarnate or if we only got one life and then we either go to heaven or hell when we die.
And that sort of reflects on my comic.

Hey, when did you start your comic?
Present Day: Started in 1999, put online 2001
Galaxy Wars: 2003 probably
When did you create your characters?
Present Day: 1999
Galaxy Wars: 1999 or earlier
What is your comic's birthday???
Never paid attention to the exact day and since the duck crashed way back when and all my websites changed I have no record of it.
What is your comic history???
Present Day: The first comic series I put online. It was slow going in the beginning and I kept learning as I went along. Then I lost interest and now I update it once every few years. Currently I'm up to chapter six. That chapter has been sitting in a folder for several years now.
Galaxy Wars: The first comic series I ever created. It was actually a video game idea and I made it before I even thought about making comics. Then years later I redid it to put up online along with Present Day. It was more successful (i.e. people actually read it at first) and I updated much more frequently. Then true to myself (probably right after the DD crash) I lost interest and now it updates a couple of times a year. Nobody really reads it anymore either. Never did get to that tournament.
As for all my other comics, not much went into the creation process so they don't have stories or dates or anything.

Hey, when did you start your comic?
Last year (2009)
When did you create your characters?
I created them more or less as I needed them in the plot or for a joke. I kinda lucked out that way since I'd never recommend the same technique to anyone else due to its greater chance of failure compared to planning characters.
What is your comic's birthday???
It's sometime in March, I think.
What is your comic history???
Lots of false starts to many series, including an attempt at a gag-a-day. I'm only interested in keeping Carnies going as a series these days as well as doing a couple of short comics. When I finally finish Carnies (probably either when I've run out of things to poke fun at in horror movies or when I just lose interest) I probably won't do another serial.

Hey, when did you start your comic?
I started hardcore drawing pages and conceptualizing out character designs for Eternity Dreams in late 2008 early 2009
When did you create your characters?
Characters were created in oh, around 2000,2002 Nikki and Liam however are newer editions to the cast and were created in 2008.
What is your comic's birthday???
December 14th, 2009 it is all growed up and drinking almost.
What is your comic history???
Way back in the day (2000, 2001), when super nerds like myself still played pen and paper tabletop games my friend Jay asked me to run a game for him. What I wound up designing was a massive campaign consisting of two parts. It would have been grand it would have been awesome and it was sadly never meant to be. My hard-core group of gaming friends dispersed two joining the military, one going off to New York (I live on the other coast) and I am sure John is still working a Ren Faire circuit somewhere. Therefore, I had this entire plot, and all these people designed and no one to play with so I stuffed in a drawer and that was that. In 2003, Jay planned to move back and instantly I began reworking the campaign, again which fell through. Then in 2007 or 2008, I cannot remember now I became so frustrated by reading bad books, badly written news articles, and bad Fan fiction that I blew up. I wrote out a short story for Eternity Dreams and man was it a hit with my friends so I decided, "Hell, I can draw some images for this!" then I thought, "Well damn, instead of this lets make a comic!" and lo' I made a comic.
