Absolutely, when I'm feeling unmotivated I'll often go to a site like conceptart.org and just look at the stuff of people who are way beyond my level. It reminds me that I want to be able to do stuff like that someday, and will usually give me a kick in the pants to start working again.

Definitly! I recently pumped myself up to get back to work on my comic by watching my favorite animes, reading my favorite comics, and listening to my favorite music. The creativity of others infused stronger creativity within me.

Yep. Though I don't go look at other sites to motivate myself, sometimes when I find a good comic and read it I suddenly go "I want to draw." Maybe I should though. Does seem like a good strategy, although I've never thought of it before. A lot of the time random character (and other thing) designs inspire me to make my own, although I rarely think up anything I find satisfactory.
I do have a friend who seems like the kind of person who'd do the opposite, though. I need to kick her. Or something. (Not actually.) :P

If I'm really down I need to find something new to give me a boost. I go to artists' websites and such and look at their work and hope for new content. If there's a lot of new content up I can feel ready to draw the next great graphic novel. If there's none I'll get bummed out. If there's only one or two things up I just find myself wanting more and just feeling disapointed. Drunk Duck's been a decent resource for discovering neat stuff by accident.

Anatak
lol, if I'm feeling down on my art, seeing someone else's better art makes me feel even worse.

I can second that! XD

Sometimes seeing someone's elses gorgeous artwork and reading their great stories will give me a good kick up the arse and get me drawing again - but if I'm past a certain point on the depression scale it'll drag me down even further and make me feel even crappier. So it really depends on my mood... It might perk me up or it might make me want to stab mself with my tablet pen... XD

The best remedy I can give for being down on your art is to just remove yourself from it. If I'm so low I don't know what to do with myself I just won't even think about drawing for a few days. Eventually I get so frustrated and bored I HAVE to draw before I go crazy - and what I do draw is usually much better after a break than when I've been burning myself out for weeks on end. ^^

Seeing someone else's artwork and realizing I have so much more stuff I need to polish and work on just makes me feel worse.

What's odd is, seeing a movie with a really good story, or reading a book with a great story does motivate me to do my stuff again. But seeing great artwork ... usually just makes me feel worse.

I guess I can understand how some people might feel down about someone having better art than them. But I see it more as a challenge. Some who's got a style I really like makes me want to try duplicate it and then take the qualities I like from it.

Though it is pretty daunting when the art style is just SO out of your league. But it still makes me want to try harder to work my way up to that level of quality.

It's a little half and half for me. To motivate myself, I sometimes look at art that's better then mine and that gets me going. Some times if the art is WAAAAY better, I might feel a little bad, but then I take their age and experience into consideration and I feel much better :P. I've only been drawing since I was like...11. I'm 17 now, so I know I have a long time to improve.

Well, I recently had a really long artist slump. I kept trying and trying to make more pages of a certain comic...but my drawings would always end up like crap and were thrown away. So I decided to do some sketching to try to improve my skills. I still didn't feel motivated...That however turned out to be short lived, you see one day during the slump I looked through some of my old stuff to look for inspiration, when I saw my old spiderman blanket. I hung it up in my room infront of the window...as a replacement for curtains...and stared a minute at it. Then it all came back to me. I stared at the shading effects on Spidermans legs, the way the foot bends inward when he's in the web-slinging swinging position.I trained even harder, I practiced my shading and light effects, I did some fanart for a friend, and that got me into drawing comic pages again! And since I trained during the slump the pictures look even better then before!

So I guess im saying...Yeah better art does give you a boost, and it may even improve your skills.

Just a tip, never look for the creator's age, don't even make and inquiry regarding how long they've been drawing.

They are all younger than you.

More to the point. real life gives me a better boost than anything nowadays, or photography. Sometimes I don't need to do anything, just lose another brain cell and it all starts flowing again.

I'm in a slump right now. I'm an Animator and Cartoonist and I want to create an anime/manga comic series along with a cartoon series. I've already gotten the cartoon mastered cause its not hard but the anime gets difficult and right now it feels hard. So I come to this site to see "I come from Mars" which inspires me to go back and draw more. I think I need help.
Anime and Cartoons galore.

Sometimes.

Sometimes it makes me feel like I'll never get as good.

But after 3 seconds of weeping, I'm usually back on my feet, telling myself to shut up and get used to the fact that there are millions and millions of people out there that will always be better than me, and the only way to get better is to stop crying and keep drawing. So shut up and draw! And if you want to learn how to dance, shut up and dance!

This year, school's full of BS!!!
