Why did you use Jpeg as an example? jpeg is the worst graphics type ever, Portable Network Graphics (PNG) for the win.

Use .jpg, .gif, or .png type of files. .bmp files are huge and no one supports them so don't bother trying. :)

Are you changing the file type with the image editing program, or are you just renaming the file on your computer? You can't just delete the .bmp part and change it to .jpg or whatnot.

That depends on what image editing program you are using. Tell us what program you're using and someone might be able to give you directions. :)
Usually you can choose the file type you want if you go to File -> Save As... there should be a little dropdown menu with different types of files listed.

The "Save As.." box is universal in all image programs.
