whats the deal with the trouphies/awards?

I was just wondering how they are awarded, I read the page on the prereqs but after meeting a couple of them I have yet to receive them and not just me I have noticed this on a couple of peoples profiles. Just curious as to how it works.

They're busted. They never worked properly and so a good portion of the time, people don't get the awards they should. This seems to happen most with the top 500, 100, etc trophies. Sometimes they'll show up after a while, but in a lot of cases they never show up at all. :[
