What would be the impact of voice chat only MMORPGs on the gamer community?

Just thought I'd ask what would happen if a great MMORPG came out that required voice chat instead of the text chat we use today. What kind of impact would it have? Let's not talk about the technology behind such a thing as we're ASSUMING that such technology is not only available but is able to support thousands of voices at once.

Personally, there won't be a lot of female avatars with male players controlling them. And a lot of complaints about a voice chat only system will come from them.

Well, I'd imagine it would be annoying. Kinda like Xbox Live.

Lots of filters and you'd still get the creepy guys playing female characters even with their deep voices. Plus lots of 13-year-olds cursing people out and using racial slurs all over the place to make sure the game is unplayable for anyone who actually wants to role play.

Noisy, crowded, chaos, hell. Summed it up in four words.
Hey buddy, you should be a Russian Cosmonaut, and here's why.

What I would like to see, though, is in-game voice protocol being a regular feature in MMOs. It's not much trouble to set up some kind of voice thing while running an MMO, but with that system you're basically limited to only being able to talk with people you know beforehand; spontaneous groups still have to type things out. I'd imagine voice chat would be limited to people actually in a group together, and that the group leader would have the option to mute anyone they found too annoying.

...

In all honesty this sounds like a painfully simple concept. Does anyone know any games that have something like this?

I think voice chat helps games in which you use teamwork and have to relay orders. I've found it useful in Team Fortress 2. And while I don't play WoW, I imagine it would be useful there, too.

But I've seen it abused in Team Fortress 2. Thankfully there are ways to block out people you don't want to hear. This would be quite a bit harder on an MMO, unless people were turned off by default and you turned on voicechat for your friends.
