First anime hmm... Maya the Bee :)
It was very popular here throughout the 80s and often rerun in the 90s (and I think even now). Of course no one knew it was an anime, which later led to funny situations when people who grew up on it were all saying that anime is bad for the kids.
Now, I know there were other series in that period that came from Japan, but I'm pretty sure Maya was one of the first cartoons I saw as a kid.
The first anime that I saw while behing aware that it is an anime? I don't know. There were three channels that were showing anime at that time (talking here veeery early 90s), two Polish and one German. The german one had a bunch of sport titles (Captain Tsubasa I think, some series about a girl playing volleyball etc.) and a lot of series by Osamu Tezuka (remember seeing an ep or two of Kimba) and Miyazaki (maybe not with his direct involvement, but a lot of them had his design style to them). The Polish channels on the other hand... well, one imported Sailor Moon and couple of shorter titles that I don't remember anymore, meanwhile the other bought a large package of titles from Italy (so they were dubbed italian + overdubbed in Polish)... among them Dash Kappei (titled "Gigi"), Sally the Witch, Tosho Daimos (titled General Daimos) and few others that I don't remember. Which one of these came first? I have absolutely no idea, but that was the 93-94 period.

As a kid, I used to watch G-Force/Battle of the Planets (I think it was the Americanized version of Gatchaman)
Hellz Yea !!! Gatchaman was the sh!t in 2nd grade !!!
though even back then i thought Galaktor was an idiotic villian . he always tried the same thing ; making some giant organic robot , and then he had all those henchmen with shaggy hair and boot cut pants .
and then there was Robotech ! that series blew my mind when i was a kid , i was all like
" cartoons can have continuity ?" i remember the time the giant green dudes trapped the dude and the one chick in the glass cage and kept trying to get them to kiss eachother , that scene seemed to go on for days !!
OzoneIs there a difference between the first time you knew you were watching anime, or the first time you actually saw one but only found out later that it was?
in that case the first time i knew i was watching anime was prolly "twighlight of the cocroaches" or " robot carnival" that was back when scifi channel actually showed cool stuff and cartoon network was just crap old hanna barbara cartoons from the 70s

Flying House?,

lotharI wonder how many of of us had that as a first? The Villain was "zoltar" when I saw it. It was a rather confused gender show... Especially with Zoltar. The two lead males just looked a little bit girly, but I didn't know what to make of Zoltar at that age.

I still love the show those, everything about it was cool, and streets ahead of the crap coming out of the U.S. at the time and years after. All that was better were the Looney-Tunes.
lotharI hope they didn't catch him masturbating...

...Wait, who cries when Jebus masturbates?

If I ever get to the U.S to go to a con with your guys, we're gonna have to Cos-play Battle of the Planets. :)

Ribbon Kishi, though i can remember watching Kimba the white lion, even though what i would call my first anime should be Dragon Quest Dai no Daiboken, because i didn' realized what was an anime until the latter.

As a kid I was obsessed with Voltron. I'm ashamed to admit it but the show that got me really into anime was Digimon.

Sailor Moon, back when it was called "Japanimation" and wasn't really too popular.
I'm not that into anime anymore, but if one manages to catch my interest I'll watch. I'm more a manga person.

Well I have to say that the first anime I watched I didn't even know it was one. I was to young to know the difference. It was about this girl with silver hair, and some how she was very important. She had people after her, and other people trying to help her. I think it was called The Maiden With the Silver Hair. If it wasn't it''s the one thing that stuck out with me about. I tried to find it latter, but couldn't. I think I was about 5 or 6 when I saw it.
I live in my own little world, but its okay they know me there

Among my friends, it's usually either Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball Z.
Mine was DBZ. I never liked Sailor Moon that much.
I still love DBZ. I want it on DVD. All of it. Up to the Cell Saga.
Also, shortly after, the various Tenchi series.

Voltron just reminded me of two other giant robot shows I watched; Combattler V and Voltes V. They were the first giant robots I remember that a team of vehicles would combine into when trouble got too rough.
I'm starting to see a link between giant robots and capital V.
It's hard to date back witch anime I watched first. Anime is not played in the televisions where I live. I saw some Dragon Ball Z when we had cable but before that I think I saw Evangelion and Berserk.
Those were my two cents.

The Farthest I can get to even remembering watching Anime was Card Captors. Ironically, after many years of staying off the anime Bandwagon, the first thing I watched was Cardcaptors the japanese original.

Anime was pretty popular where I live even when nobody knew it was anime (they were renamed, dubbed and sometimes censored a lot). I concur with Lothar about Robotech, but I have to say that the first anime I remember being crazy about as a kid was Mazinger Z (when I was 5 or so). I loved Voltron and I used to watch Astroboy too, but I was a fan of Mazinger. Oh, and I hated Speed Racer back then, hahaha.
I was going to say GOBOTS [en.wikipedia.org]too, but that was produced by Hanna-Barbera, so...
A million more come to mind, just how many series have I watched in my life???? X______X

Wow...some pretty recent anime's for people's firsts...stop trying to make some of us feel old...
Voltron was my first. It rocked...but the translation sucked so hard. At the time it didn't matter, though.
Around the same time was Macross!

Either Voltron or Magic Knight Rayearth.
One of my earliest teachers dedicated hours to showing us these Voltron episodes he had on tape, but someone wolf-whistled at the princess, so he yelled at us and wouldn't let us watch any more (overreacting much?). I was so delighted when they showed it on TV!

the first one i remember seeing was a movie on the Sci-fi channel. it was some movie about the end of the world, anda dude with a sword had to stop it. (seems familiar no?) he was in tokyo, but it had been ripped apart by satan. i remember he battled him.
never really figured out the name of the movie, and it's been nigh 12 years since i saw that. but the first show i started watching was pokemon10 years or so ago.

Speed Racer!!
I used to love it soo much as a kid. I recently got the first season on DVD and although it was nostalgic, it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered :P
Good think the Speed Racer movie was the greatest movie ever or I'd be sad. :]

I remember watching Pokemon at five o'clock in the morning before school, before the gameboy games came out, before the craze. First episode of any anime I watch was the one with ditto. Good Times

Unless you're from Europe or Australia, the anime was on TV for all of three weeks before the games hit the shelves. Somehow I doubt you were watching it before the games came out, especially if your first episode was the one with ditto (episode 37, which aired a month after the launch of the games). The show was made to advertise the games and merchandise, not the other way around.

When I was about 6 my brother let me watch up to about the 10th episode of Guyver, the Bio boosted armour, but back then everything was classified as being a cartoon. I still thought that when Pokemon and Sailor Moon were on Tv, so the first Anime I knew was an Anime was (I think) Akira.
