The Little Prince. Used to watch it obsessively when I was 5. That and Sebastian and Belle. The first anime I watched after discovering what anime was was Akira, which I saw back in middle school when it was first released on VHS by Streamline in 1991. Before that I forced my parents to buy me a copy of Warriors of the Wind on beta, not realizing it was a hack job of Nausicaa, but back in grade school I didn't distinguish between anime and Western animation and it wasn't like I could hit the forums on the internet back then.

Sailor Moon. They used to air it on Saturday mornings here, so I watched some of it. Never really liked it, though. And at the time, I wasn't aware of what anime was, even.
I don't know if the Japanese animated version of the Moomins counts as anime, but if it does, it was also one of my first; I can't remember if I saw Sailor Moon or the Moomins first.
The first anime I watched that I was aware of was anime was Full Metal Alchemist. It's all been downhill from there. :P

I think the first one I remember was Unico, by Osamu Tezuka. I was about 4 when I saw it. Of course I had no idea it was made in Japan. But the first time I deliberately watched an anime, it was Record of Lodoss War.

First childhood anime... I don't remember the earliest, but The Little Prince was up there.
I also remember this series where a bunch of mice traveled in their own little submarine, looking for a new promised land to settle in. They're pursued by a gang of mongooses, led by an albino mongoose. This series was epic. It's 1 of very few cartoons that I watched from episode 1 to the very end.
1st anime I watched, as anime, was Yotoden 123. It's the very 1st one I watched that spoke in Jpnese. And it had no subtitles.

Whoa. That's almost exactly the same as me! Only I think I was closer to 6 or 7 when I saw Unico and I saw DBZ around the same time I saw Lodoss War.

Oh... the Last Unicorn.... Duh, yeah... But that wasn't really Japaneesy...
And using the Japanese name for it in an English speaking forum is silly since it's an adaptation of an English book anyway. :P
Ah I dunno, call it what ya like ^_^
My earliest anime series was the aforementioned Battle of the Planets.
But after that there was (all English names since that the version they were), Star Blazers, Kimba the White Lion, Speed Racer, Robotech, Astro Boy, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz...
The joint French and Japanese ones: Ulysses 31, The Mysterious Cities of Gold, Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea...
Fond memories. ^_^

As a kid, I used to watch G-Force/Battle of the Planets (I think it was the Americanized version of Gatchaman) and the old Voltron cartoon.
...I used to think Thundercats was Japanese until a friend told me otherwise.

I forgot about Voltron... Yeah. I think Thundercats might have had some Japanese input, like transformers maybe? I dunno. While the character designs were of the quality of Japanese productions, the animation wasn't quite as good (as Japanese animation for the same period).

Voltron just reminded me of two other giant robot shows I watched; Combattler V and Voltes V. They were the first giant robots I remember that a team of vehicles would combine into when trouble got too rough.

The earliest I remember is Voltron, G-Force. Flying House?, and Unico...
Oh yeah, The Ultraman cartoon was cool too. I remember an animated Ultraman animated movie that had this small creature that grew larger every few minutes. I watched that movie so much as a kid!

Unico and Last Unicorn were seperate unrelated movies though.... But you're right about Last Unicorn being made by the Japanese. One of my friends told me that some important people from the Last Unicorn's studio went on to join Studio Ghibli.

Speed Racer, probably.
After that, I'd have to say Sailor Moon (since CN whored that out) and then Dragonball Z.

But you're right about Last Unicorn being made by the Japanese.
Actually, Rankin-Bass was one of the first American studios to outsource a lot of their work overseas. Topcraft in Japan was one of the studios they outsourced to, but the production was still written, directed, produced, and all of the preproduction work (design, storyboarding, etc) was done in the states. Topcraft had a larger role in creating the Last Unicorn than other Rankin-Bass productions they helped out on (where they were mostly painting cells, inbetweening, etc), but I would really hesitate to claim it as anime or even a Japanese production. It's about as Japanese as the Venture Brothers is Korean.
Other movies/series Topcraft worked on for Rankin-Bass were 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Kid Power, The Hobbit, The Return of the King, The Flight of the Dragons, and, believe it or not, The Thundercats (under the name Pacific Animation Corporation, which at the time was a collective of several Japanese studios which included Topcraft).
Topcraft was also used by Miyazaki for the animation in Nausicaa. Many of the animators from the studio ended up leaving after the production to join Miyazaki and Takahata's Studio Ghibli.
