What made you decide to do your comic?

I wasn't sure if this would be the correct place to start this thread, but it seemed like the best. Anyway, what inspired you guys to make the comic that you currently make? A late night doodle that you decided to take further? A dare from a friend?

I started it mainly to impress my ex-girlfriend, and it took off from there. I had meant to start the comic earlier, but I never got around to it, with all the video games I played.
It's a comic!

I wanted to draw a girl with a legitimate, logical/realistic (for the setting) reason to be carting around a scythe. ;)

Honestly? Because someone pissed me off. And because of that, I quit my old comic cold turkey. This disappointed a few folks, but had to happen.

So Im going to start another one, mostly because I have something to prove. Not really the best reason to start a webcomic, but I'm being honest here. Anyone that does webcomics knows that you have to have something creative going on.

'Course, I havent even gotten started yet. But Im workin' on it.

I got bored in my gesture drawing class one day and just started doodling some characters and then what kind of story they would have and it just grew from there.

I just started working on it kinda as a hobby/challenge and it's sorta taken off since then. It's probably the only project that I've stuck with for this long. And hopefully I'll continue for a long, long time. It's pretty much become, My Baby.

Comic #1 - My online friend who collaborated with me on past comics, contacted me out of the blue, and asked if I wanted to work on another collaboration, with the theme of the first chapter being "A Gathering of Heroes." I came up with an original idea and we winged it from there. There was no overarching plot. We would wing it with each subsequent chapter, depending on the next chapter theme that was given to us. If it wasn't for this comic, we would have lost contact after impromanga.com died.

Comic #2 - The sequel/prequel/simul-quel/B-Side to #1. It started off as a single scene in my head. It was originally meant to be only an epilogue scene for Comic #1! Like a small scene you'd see AFTER the movie end credits. But it just grew and grew into a nice story; I was inspired, typing madly for weeks. I got my friend onboard again; can't do it without him.

FIGHT current chapter: Filling In The Gaps
FIGHT_2 current chapter: Light Years of Gold

Practice. I needed to practice drawing comics, and push myself into doing it.

And also I wanted some whiney emo kid to be the main character. *shrug*

This year, school's full of BS!!!

Yeah that two. I've read a lot of other web comics, before I finally got up the nerve to actually believe that I could do a comic strip.

I always pictured my roommates as anime characters. I bought a book on drawing manga at the mall, just for kicks. Waiting on the bus, one of my roommates ran back into the mall and appeared a few minutes later, announcing in a happy voice "I went in for a cookie and came out with a puzzle!" My other roommate put on her sunglasses and backed away. I slammed my head into a nearby pillar. Suddenly, I had my characters and decided it was now time to learn to draw.

I wanted to do a comic that I wouldn't stop doing after under ten pages like all previous webcomic attempts.
Other than that, lots of ideas, like, 'why are fantasy manga always like 'steampunk fatasy' or 'medieval fantasy' or 'sci-fi fantasy', why is there no '1960's fantasy'?' And 'What if I made a shoujo manga abour young people and complex relationships with lots of action and fighing?' and 'Why don't british manga artists ever write characters who speak like British people?'
In the end, I just thought, 'Heck, why don't I make a comic that just does everything I'd like to see in comics but don't see?'

PT is a story that I've been sitting on for years (I started writing it in middle school, so it's been a good 15 years), meaning to do something with it someday, and just not getting around to it. Finally about six months ago I got absolutely fed up with not having a project of my own to work on, and I just sat down and started re-writing it with the intention of using it for practice.

Then I started having fun with it, and it just kind of kept going. lol! It's currently serving to remind me why I enjoy making comics.

I wanted to write a comic book with my wife from scratch, with me drawing it.

Due East was the result of years of brainstorming (we actually started brainstorming on it in 1999 but didn't start drawing it until 2003). And it's still a lot of fun for us to write and the story just keeps growing. :)

Not enough Action/Adventure comics with Robot Detectives(For my webcomic)

For my Graphic Novel project, not enough Monster Hunting comics that focus on hunting monsters. Seriously, i'm sick of reading a comic that starts off with such promise to be such an epic monster hunting comic and it just peters out into some kind of "OH NOES BAD GUYS HAVE EVIL PLOT LETS KILL THEM" shit.

My graphic novel will have epic monster battles. For sure.

I was sick of playing video games during my days off (I have alot of days off because of my sickness, I wanted to do something constructive :3)

I first started writing the story (The Faction)in a note book, then I started drawing them :3 I wanted to see how things would look if the characters and the story were illustrated ^^

I wanted to make a steampunk comic but was sort of uninspired for ideas. I later did a drawing of what I thought a nineteenth century punk-rocker might look like, not really intending it to go anywhere. My friend sugested I make a steampunk comic about the discovery of an alien creature, I haphazardly doodled a fuzzy, scrawny alien-thing on a piece of blue stationary. When other people I knew responded to these drawings I refined them and they became Cricket and Creature and ended up taking the sugestion of it being a steampunk comic about discovering an alien, or rather a street urchin befriending one.

For me it was because I love to create stories, and I love to design characters in cool costumes, so what else could I do both with? I started playing with drawing comics from the time I could write and draw simultaneously. (suffer with the lack of a spelling skill, however...) I guess more than being your traditional artist, I just love making stuff up. But why did I put my comic on the web. I guess I was trying to justify the time spent on it. I rather draw than watch tv or play games. So putting it on the web was a way to share. I imagine it will always be a hobby of mine.
Yep, that's about it.

Basically I started making as a hobby, since I like making silly little comics (very loosely) based on actual events, but I only ever make an "episode" when I actually have an idea I believe to be funny enough to be made into a comic strip. I really need to update more. lol!

The reason I started making Behind A Name was because I've always wanted to do an action comic, and the community event looked like great fun. It made a nice change from the non-sequitur comic-strip format of Viva Life, and also help me improve my art skills slightly in both comics, while telling a story at the same time. :)

Damned Love started as a little four page project that I had with my friend. It disappeared for a bit and reemerged in it's current form. I use it to practice paneling and expression and poses, things like that. Plus, the story's been pestering to get out. I went on a one year hiatus on it, and returned full force :D.

Desu Desu PLZ is more recent and is just a gag comic. It's part of a mini-series my friend and I are making. It's a parody of every stereotype we can think up in anime and video games. This one is a little of a side comic at the moment, I'm trying to make it bigger. :D

"Tales of the Revenant" came about from a collaborative hero-pulp writing group I was a part of back in 2000. I started toying with the idea that maybe I COULD do a comic story (which I've wanted to do all my life) so I started writing a story and drawing thumbnails of the pages.
I hated it.
Then I saw a nifty comic called "Spacegirl" by Travis Charest (http://groups.msn.com/travischarest/spacegirlcomic.msnw ) and thought..."hey! That would be a cool way to do a comic...just one panel at a time, like an old newspaper strip!"
So...I sat down....and drew the first panel. Then the second....and so on. It's really helped me get a grip on my rendering skills and my storytelling skills. My next book will be more complex and (hopefully) more interesting!

hmmm...

Disgruntled Roommates 2 - It's actually a revision of an old comic I used to draw with my friends when we'd stay up all night, get hopped up on soda and cheese puffs, then write down our inside jokes in furry style. DRM2 removed a character (because that friend moved away and we don't talk much anymore) and changed them from furries to people, because I hate furries and only made them that in the first place to mock the whole furry obsession at the time with some people.

Dying to Live - I was tired of another comic I drew, and wanted to draw something involving a haunted house and college students. This was the brain child of my boredom.
