If you had to choose your favorite manga, what would it be and why?

My favorite is Gin-Tama, because of the brilliant comedy.

I read only one manga, Case Closed. I'm not a fan of manga in general, but I love classic mystery stories, and Case Closed holds a revered space on my shelves alongside Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie novels.

Bastard, from issue 7 or so on until the end, was beautiful to look at. Not sure what it was about, but art wise, it was incredible.

I read a lot of manga, but I still have yet to see anything better than the brilliance of Uzumaki.

"You tell yourself to just
enjoy the process," he added. "That whether you succeed or fail, win or

ironic humor, while secretly praying for a miracle."

Batman - Child of Dreams

I know it may seem odd that Batman is one of my favorite mangas but Kia Asamiya's take on the Dark Knight was one of the best I've read in years. He really captured the look and feel of Batman and wrote a really fun story. Then again it is Kia Asamiya so he could probably do a series on someone like Maggot [en.wikipedia.org] and still make it interesting. Kia does just great work all around.

Ah My Goddess - The 4th Goddess

I'm a huge fan of AMG even if I think the series latest installments have gotten a bit weak with the main character parents finally being introduced and some of the characters starting to be Fladerized [tvtropes.org] but the 4th goddess was before all that. Prior to this installment Kōsuke Fujishima had mainly spent his time developing the main cast and their human supporting cast, most other worldly characters only showed up for a single issue before taking off, that all changed with the 4th Goddess. For the first time we got a look at a goddess, Peorth, outside of the core cast and Kōsuke employs her to excellent use. Peorth was developed as her own character but her arrival also played extremely well with the other three goddesses and shaking things up a bit. Moreover she re-enforces the books reoccuring theme about the conflict in the main characters between their romantic love and sexual love and both's place in their developing relationship. Rather than tip toe around this as in past volumes Peorth's arrival took the touchy subject head on in a way that we hadn't really seen since early on in the manga. While probably not the place to start the series I'd definitely say this was my favorite volume in the series.

Vampire Game

This little know manga really grabbed my attention and held it. While the art is sometimes a bit weak due to being light on backgrounds it flawlessly manages to blend comedy, drama, character development and intrigue that so many web comics are trying to go for. While some parts are predictable I found all parts of it to be enjoyable. Another thing I say for the series is it really knew the right pace of the story not moving too fast or too slow a problem I've seen in many other works and best of all I knew when its story was over and didn't try and stretch it out. The plot revolves around a free spirited princess who ends up working with the vampire king to find his reincarnated foe. Thing is the foe is going to be reincarnated into her bloodline and since all of them are plotting traitors whom want to take the crown our princess doesn't see this as a bad thing. A LOT of hilarity ensues as the vampire king take quite a long time to regain his power and piece together just what is going on and who's on who's side but as I said I enjoyed every minute of it. It certainly won't be for everyone but if you like romance, adventure, characters and humor as opposed to loads of yelling, impotent violence and dramatic posing then you'll enjoy Vampire Game.

Go Nagai's Devilman:

First of all, it's not for kids (unlike the original 70s anime). It's quite violent, a bit extreme at times. Art ranges from crude to brilliant; on one side it's heavily Tezuka influenced and often there's some wonky anatomy, but whenever there's action, the dynamism of it simply leaps from the pages and smacks you straight in the eyes.

The story is about Akira Fudo, a rather wimpy student who gets merged with a demon called Amon and becomes Devilman, half-man half-demon, to fight other demons in the name of humanity. Pretty basic stuff, but there's a couple of twists along the way and it was pretty fresh and shocking when it originally came out in the 70s.

Sadly, no one published it in English yet... verotik attempted by they botched the whole thing by choosing the WRONG story (started with a single volume "add-on" that basically has the characters time-travelling), messed up the format (split into single issues) and hired the WORST colorist possible.
I can see why no other publisher has touched it so far.

I didn't read a lot of manga, but from now on my favorite is Monster.

I've started reading Family Compo lately, but can't find the latest chapters. I like it a lot so far, very funny.

Gantz.

I love everything about it.

Also, anything by Junji Ito.

Parasyte was also good.

Onani Mater Kurosawa too.

I'd have to give that to two Korean comics

Veritas

and

Ares

Both have great art, fantastic stories and even better fight scenes.

One choice, favorite of all time is definitely Saikano. I love Saikano. And it's the saddest bunch of books I've ever followed.

Although I only read the first volume I really liked Vagabond.
I also liked Short Cuts for its wacky humor and actually really clever fourth wall-breaking gags. I also think that it was actually to the comic's advantage that there wasn't really a story but just a collection of short 1-3 page one-offs.
The first manga I ever read was Battle Angel Alita. Admittedly I've probably read better manga since then but it's a long-time favorite that I keep rereading it-- and I liked it enough that I painted the Barjack emblem on my leather jacket.
