It really only matters about what your preferences are. I bet few people will agree with each other here.

True, but you can't propose something so entirely dependent on opinion as a debatable question.
It's a comic!

If you want to get into this then you have to count in the fact that everything in life is based on opinion. From big things like weather there is a god to what am I going to have for beakfast. This post was suposed to be a place were people could place their opinions on comics and ask for help on whatever they want. I have found no forum like that so I decited to make one. And if you can find one for me then please tell me and Ill find a way to take this down. Till then this is up for anyone who wants to post.

The best type of comic is the one that makes you laugh. Or in my case, makes me laugh.

Well, I wouldn't word it "What is the best type of comic" if the question is what is my favorite type or what I look for in a comic. I definitely think that my favorites are not "the best."

To answer your question directly the way it is stated in the thread title... I imagine that "the best" comics are the ones that are bringing their creators $$$$. Or, if you are defining "best" in a different sense, perhaps they are the political comics that are increasing awareness and possibly even effecting change.

If you just want to know my personal preferences... I like strips that make me laugh. I don't care how they do it. I also like story comics that have characters I can connect to, which means the writing has to be good and the art at least good enough to convey emotion and mood. (The characters have to have expressive faces, whether or not they look shaded or flat, detailed or simple.)

The best kinds of comics are the ones that make you think.

The worst kinds are the ones where the women look rediculously awful(vw sized breasts, tree trunk thighs and no waist), the men all speak in exclimation points! and people wear tights.

The best comic are the ones you keep coming back to.

In my experience, these aren't always the ones I *think* are the best. I often tire of those, but i keep coming back to others that didn't seem to stand out so much at first...

The best comics are the ones that stick with you. it doesnt matter if you can say why or not.

I definitly go for comics that are more fantasy based. I like comedy strips that can keep a continuous story going with evolving characters. Not just random Gag joke after gag joke.

So basically I like story/character driven, fantasy/comedies. And good quality art to go with it.

It's not the only kind of comic I read, but those are the elements that really draw my attention.

Well, Pirogoth, what's YOUR opinion? If you wanted people to debate, post your own opinion as a grounds for people to start on, otherwise you'll get the kind of talk you see on the first few posts.

As for me, I directly contrast with Robert and say that I like the kind of comic that requires little thought. Comics are often meant to be a distraction from work and real life and I feel they don't do their job well if they feel too much like work to read. I will, however, agree with him on the whole woman thing.

The best types of comics to me are the ones the creator has put a lot of love into. I think it always shows when a comic is done half-assed... not as much care has been put into the writing or artwork... there's just always something a little lifeless about it. It's the best thing to just see someone creating a comic they love~ :)

I like to see people get stabed, do drugs, have sex, explode, and think, I love to see them think about what they do. "Comic" types of these things are ok at times but I really like to see people be affected in a normal way. Someone gets shot it's not "ZOMG I gots teh bullets in me!" more like "oh my god... I... I'm going to die...". I haven't written many of those yet but I plan on it.
Everybody wants that fold of matches to reinflate their confidence.

If a book doesnt make me think, if it doesnt teach me about something, if it doesnt inspire me or motivate me or challenge me, I'm less likely to read it more than once. Thats true for everything. Music, books(comics or otherwise), tv, movies, video games, what ever.

The only time this isnt a requirement is if the work of art is more emotionally based. If it can make me feel something, it will be important to me. Crash, the most awesome movie ever, didn't teach me anything. mostly it made me cry, laugh, get angry, get happy, and get horny. It pretty much hit all the basic emotions. Besides, thandie newton is a goddess who you should all worship. heh.

Back to comics though, comics that make you think and feel are the first best, comics that make you think are second best, comics that make you feel are third best and comics that don't do anything but provide an escape from the "real world"? Not my cup of tea.
