going away - The Game Room

What horror game kept scaring you when you turned the console off?

I was playing Silent Hill 2 for the first time and I was wandering around the town getting paranoid at those lovely little noises in the background. I spent so long being extra careful about everything that I didn't realise how much time had passed, so when I looked out of the window it was night time and the entire street was covered in a really thick mist. I think I panicked and went to watch something fluffy.

Also, I think it was the first Resident Evil with a zombie in the bath tub, but I still don't trust my bath with the shower curtain pulled.

Okay! They weren't the best examples ever but what games have left you jumping at your own shadow?

The very first Silent Hill. I still to this day cannot get through the school. That sound on the second floor keeps me away. -_-

Even worse, sometimes I had dreams after playing the game about my old high school, and that sound showing up on the second floor...

Never really played horror games... cuz I know I'd be too scared to even play properly. But... probably the Silent Hill games freaked me out a little. There's this other game that would've freaked me out if I ever played it. I'd like to try it though... I forgot what it's called though... it was at the tip of my tougue... but anyway... in this game you play a girl with a dog and you have to escape from a castle. Ah, and you also have a creepy stalker following you... and if he catches you... well... we all know what happens then. *shudder* But it interests me. Also the fatal frame games sound cool.

rule of rose!!

Clock Tower: the first fear creeped me too much that I couldn't even play it properly..... and it wasn't scary in the same way that the other horror games were. it was for the SNES, after all. *blushes*
I'm on hitatus while I redo one of my webcomics. Be sure to check it out when I'n done! :)

Clock tower was pretty scary. I remember looking at the cover when I was like 11 or 12 yrs old... and I got freaked out.

The only horror games I've ever played are some Resident Evils and a bit of Doom 3. Doom 3 was pretty scary (for me at least) but it didn't really haunt me. The RE games just aren't very scary at all.

How can you get scared of a video game...

"AHHH! THE PIXELS! THEY'RE GOING TO GET ME!"

it's NOT THE video game, it's the IDEA. For instance, say you're playing an video game where you're trapped in an dark house where lights don't work. where you have to find clues and objects to escape before the killer gets you just like he does to your poor friends....

and then after you fhinsh playing the game for the night, and then all of a sudden there's a blackout, and you can't go anywhere, you're alone. and then it's suddenly like you're in the video game somewhat...it's the idea that some of it could really happen in real life that gets you nervous.

That sounds like the standard slasher-movie plotline.

yeah. also the basic plot to some of the thriller horror video games, with zombies/supernatural stuff thrown in. Rule of Rose, The clock tower series, etc...

movies are one thing... video games makes it somehow more scary than the movies, proably because of you having to get inolved into the plot and keeping your characters alive.

I remember that I turned off all the lights, closed off all the windows, drew all the shades and played Manhunt in total darkness with one of the best audio systems that money could buy. After a while, the total ambiance got to me and I started to feel like I was really being hunted. The lack of sleep didn't help.

There are various games that aren't considered scary but still haunt me or I can't play. Any game featuring any kind of fish really freaks me out. Like, really freak out more so than any sort of horror game.

I'm terrified of fish.

Does Beyond the Beyond count? That thing was so crap it felt like a horror story...

If not, then the first Silent Hill

I played Silent Hill at my mates house, with the curtains drawn, lights all off, it was about midnight and we had a surround sound on both ears. It really felt like the screams and moans were coming from behind me, and the rain was all around me. It was really cool. But freaky as shit.

The biggest jumpy moment I ever had was several years ago, I was playing Resi Evil 3 with 3 mates in the room. I walked into the hall area and Nemesis smashed through the window and we all catapulted ourselves to the back of the room. We jumped like hell. Now of course, that bit is so unjumpy its like childs play but...we were rather young.
Please, please, you give me too little credit.

I'm basically like that with any horror media, be it books, movies, games, TV shows, etc. I guess I've just got an overactive imagination and an inclination to paranoia.

Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 4-just because the ghosts don't die and I had this black stuff on my wall (still don't know what it was!) and I was convinced that it was getting bigger. Sh4 also fed my fear of hospitals (theories that Walter Sullivan was a med student).

Heh, not my own example this time but my sister picked up the Silent Hill 2 case to read it and this weird high-pitched whistling sound started up out of no where. She freaked and left the room. It turned out she was breathing through her nose.

Hahaha.

My little sister got scared while watching me play Resident Evil: Dead Aim. She also nearly lost her mind from me playing RE4, but that was because the Merchant annoyed her.

System Shock 2 for the PC.

Yeah, oddball one, i know. Turn the music and the lights off.

Ignore the fact that the polygons look like shit. It's the idea, the ambient sounds of the ship, and the execution that makes that game really, really creepy.

(wanted to contribute and not just confirm that Silent Hill is scary as hell.)

Shadowman. The way they butchered one of my favorite comics, leaving it looking NOTHING like the source material ...

I still get shudders.

The Silent Hill games reliably keep my pants damp.
However, Twisted Metal Black is also rather creepy. The music-like sound in the menu is freaky, and don't even get me started about No-Face. So... creepy...

If anyone makes me fun of me for this I will hunt them down for their soul! Actually I have never played a horror game. So the scariest thing that has happened in a video game was when I was fighting the Phantom in the first Kingdom Hearts. I was so scared because I was fighting him at 2:00 AM and he already killed both Peter Pan and Goofy. You know how he actually kills the characters by using doom. So yeah. After I lost to him a million times I was so terrified because I kept seeing moving clothes in my closet from the wind. I thought it was the phantom and I was so creeped out. Note that I was only 9 years old.

F.E.A.R. (The original) at the part when freaks start to come out of the dark mist (Especially one where masses start to show up near the end).

No matter how much the memories haunted me, I still managed to get my 8+ hours of sleep.
