What do you keep on your Bookshelf?

Do you hold onto older books from childhood? Do you toss 'em, and fill up on adult literature? Do you still have that Goosebumps collection from when you were still young enough to think they were cool? Or do you just cram all your DVDs and videogames onto the shelves, next to your manga collection? XD

To be fair, I'll kick this off.

On my shelf, I have an incomplete collection of Animorphs books. I actually lost a few books during three moves, and I never completed the series as it was coming out (From what I hear, I'm glad I didn't). I also have the Circle of Three series, several books on religion, New Age stuff, tarot/palm reading, and LOADS of sketchbooks. Like, a TON. Seriously. Oh, and several horror novels, including the uncut Stephen King book, The Stand.

I also have a bunch of DVDs taking up one shelf. A solid half of them are anime, the other half are actual movies like Cloverfield, Silent Hill, Bruce Almighty, etc. '

As a final question, what do you think your bookshelf says about you? :3

Bookshelf? As in singular? HA! We have a library in our basement as well as multiple bookshelves in every room, with every kind of book you could ever want.

I have a couple of bookshelves and way more books than I can fit onto them. There's one at the foot/head of my bed (I alternate how I sleep) that has mostly decorations including Japanese pictures and a Japanese chest with a bunch of thing contained in smaller drawers. I have some larger books in the bottom section and a ton of old manga just above that.

My other book shelves are pretty much filled with books. All sorts of books and some video game magazines and National Geographics primarily fill my shelves. Then there are some ornamental things such as figurines I got when I went to Japan, a couple of dead things, a wilted flower, some pretty boxes, and old Goku clock, a gargoyle that we gave glasses and a primitive necklace on, and some other stuff.

Gah, too much to bring up... I special order several books at our local library every month or so because I want to read the original versions. Then I have about a billion of dictionaries ranging from english, japanese and even nahuatl (being a language student). I also have some manga my friend bought me about five years ago when she was in Japan studying, that's Bleach book 1 - 14, Inuyasha book 1 - 9000!!1, Sailor Moon, all the Ranma½ et.c... Let's see, what more? Oh yeah, my collection of Spider-Man comics, from 1978 - Present :D

Bookshelves, desks with books, books under desks, books under tables, books in the library I've turned one room into but still building... Books in the garage. :(

The earliest books are mostly on the shelves in my room. I was really into technical stuff and art as a littley so they're mostly art books, picture books on different types of ships, observation manuals about aeroplanes, books on astronomy, kid's encyclopaedias... even a joke book.
Add to that my Asterix and Tin Tin. Then classic fantasy by Tolkien and CS Lewis and many others.

Later books are fine art books, collections of SciFi and Fantasy illustration, some 1930's pulps, lots of fantasy novels -from the 80's and the 70's mostly which were my preferred periods for that style, but some older and some newer, and Sci-Fi from much the same periods. There's books on Norse and Greek mythology, Literature with a capital "L", PG Woodhouse, Dictionaries, books on physics and chemistry and more. As well as shells, models, interesting rocks, two swords, a boomerang, A flowerpot full of zillions of feathers, boxes of oil paints, and a trillion other little bits and pieces covering every tiny last bit of room on those bedroom bookcases.

And my bedside table has a pile of Heavy Metal comics I borrowed from a friend, with a Flashman novel by George MacDonald Fraser on top of them.

Quite dorky eh? :)

----------
The rest of the house has collections in themes, like a desk that's full of my illustration books, fine art books and books on art decco, and the one near my comp here that's mostly full of reference books about war machines, uniforms, pinup-art, interesting photography, sea battles...
Or the big bookcase further over full of CDs, shelves of dictionaries, encyclopaedias, books on different aspects on the English language, a shelf of religious books with with different bible versions and a copy of the Koran (in English and Arabic).
The other s I won't bother going into.. more of the same, sme different things entirely, but always more.

And, and, and... I like books. A bit.

I only have on bookshelf in my apartment, most of my books are still back at my parent's place. I have a couple shakespeare plays, Othello, Hamlet, A Midsummernight's Dream, the Sonnets. Some philosophy, Camus, Kierkegaard, Platos' Republic, On Bullshit and On Truth, a compilation on the limits of thought. The bible, a guide to voodoo, Dominion Tank police comics, Gunsmith cats comics, and the current Booster Gold run. Like ten different art books, including one of Scott McClouds. Fight Club, The Beach, The Tesseract, Trainspotting, Porno, and Filth by Irvine Welsch, Don Quixote, Esquires "The Rules", Zombie Survival Guide, The Big Sleep, Last Night a DJ Saved my Life (history of the DJ). I think theres probably a couple more that I can't remember off the top of my head. But it's a pretty small shelf so it can't be too much more

I have bookshelves everywhere. And more books than I can hold on them.

Let's see...a rough order would probably be:

100 or so Executioner and related Bolanverse novels.
Most of Robert E. Howard's original Conan works, and most other Conan books/stories.
Almost the entire Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
A small but growing collection of Nero Wolfe novels.
A couple of Gunsmith Cats manga.
Two of, hopefully, the start of a Golgo 13 collection.
A gazillion Star Trek books.
Nearly the complete series of Bone comics (I will have them all!).
Piles of Jack Higgins novels.
Almost all of Tom Clancy's works.
A shelf dedicated solely to James Bond.
Two shelves dedicated to Nick Carter.
All of Robert Ludlum's stuff.
Westerns of every stripe imaginable.
Almost everything Steven King has ever written (even though I don't much care for him).
Some Dave Barry collections.
An incomplete set of Rogue Warrior novels.
A couple of Tin Tin comics.
And various books in suspense, fantasy, science fiction, action, mystery, horror, and other genres. Too many to really name. :P

What does it say about me? That I love to read and never get rid of any of my books. Ever.
A Roll of the Dice now with full-size pages!

John Clyde now with ten times the tacky Hawaiian shirts!

Ehhhh... I liked the first several, but I found my interest waning the longer the series dragged on. I eventually just stopped getting the books, and I'm glad I did. They killed off a major character for almost no reason except to give Jake a complex. And it gets worse from there. =_=

I have no clue, it's been ages since I read. I think she "freed" herself. That is, I think they fired her from Visser One position, or something. I don't remember, though.

My shelf is loaded up with a mix of bestsellers and titles you've never heard of before.
I tend to scour the sale tables at the local Chapters and pick out odds and ends that seem interesting.
But I also have the necessities: The Odyssey, The Iliad, Silence of the Lambs, The Art of War, Twilight, The Da Vinci Code, As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet, and Sense and Sensibility.
You can tell my favourite authors because I have more than one book by them. lol
Dan Brown, Christopher Moore, Christopher Paolini, Shakespeare and Homer.
I also have a wide variety of text books on math, psychology, astronomy and paleontology. Along with texts like "Communist Manifesto", "The Future of an Illusion" and the "Great Dialouges".
I have multiple texts surrounding The Da Vinci Code, including "The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail" and "Secrets of the Code".
I've got... a text on the Necronomicon.
And one on the Philosopher's Stone.
A couple of books on Prose and Poetry.
Multiple fantasy novels.
My Atheist's Bible, full of great quotes by famous atheists.

And of course, the pinacle of my collection:
Stephen Colbert's "I Am America (And So Can You!).

I have one bookshelf crammed with crap. It's slightly organized.

Trade paperbacks and manga on the top, art and text books on the middle and oversized artbooks and paper on the bottom. I also have a small collection of PS2/PS1 games wedged in on the middle shelf. When I run out of room, I just stick books inbetween that space between the top of the shelf and the top of the books.

and my TV sits on the very top, I'm sure one day I'll come home and my shelf will have completely collapsed.

Let's see, from memory I know I have:
-megaman zero artbook
-FLCL groundworks artbook
-Batman animated artbook
-Evangelion: Der Mond artbook
-all the Scott Pilgrim books that have come out so far
-all the damion scott version of Batgirl trade paper backs
-a hard bound copy of DC's Identity Crisis
-an unopened copy of Final Fantasy 12

and a bunch of other crap I can't remember
without buttcheecks, it's just a hole.

I have almost every Discworld novel.
Problem is, Pratchett just won't stop writing more!
I've turned to getting more books from the library these days - much cheaper :)
That said I do still have an inordinately large number of books littering my shelves...
I have quite a few Anthony Horowitz books, the Series of Unfortunate Events books by Lemony Snickett, a few Gary Larson collections, there's even a copy of the Iliad up there.
i have quite a varied personal library :)
Timmy And the Bleach

There are many things in this world that are uncertain
I'd say I'm one of them
But I'm not sure

Well, since you ask so nicely...
I'll limit this to my room, or we'll be here all week, and it's not going to be in order. I refuse to arrange my books by author and only have vauge thematic "piles" which is kinda ironic since I'm stydying to be a librarian. Anyway.

As with most of the others here I don't have one. My room is very small, but I managed to cram four bookshelves in there.
One of theese: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40047675
And three of theese: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50103086
all in black. That should give you all an idea about what kind of room I have to work with. Oh, and I got my room redecorated recently, so I'm still filling in things.

The big one mostly holds books.
There's hobby-books ranging from painting with watercolors, sewing plushies and making jewellery to making knives. And some other odds and ends too.
Then there's childrens books, and we're not talking old ones here. I regularly buy new ones. Yes, I turned 21 yesterday, and I still buy books for kids. You may mock me now. There's some old ones from my childhood too. The old ones are generally translated, and the new ones in english if you want to know.
Further along there's a mix of street art, books about tattoos, artsy experimental books and books about found objects.
Then there's the "human oddities" area with freaks, obscure cures and hoaxes. One of the books that belong there is missing at the moment, and it's annoying me greatly.
Neil Gaiman practically has his own room, and then there's the other fantasy/sci-fi-ish things surrounding him.
And old National Geographic magazines down at floor level + some other assorted things.
There's a room with fictive beastiaries too. My pride and joy is "Life after Man", a book I borrowed so much from my dad that he ended up giving me my own copy.
A few rooms are sorta reserved for three dimensional objects. One holds fossils, one plushies (need to find a better place for them) and there's restored japaneese windup robots stashed away in there too. I recently discovered that the two big ones I have may be worth something, as I saw old rusty ones sold for a fair price somewhere. I'm not going to give mine up, but it's fun to know.

I have my DVDs in one of the small ones. I think I arranged them in postapocalyptic/sci-fi of which we have a lot it turns out. Anime, where most of them aren't actually there at the moment, because my mom borrowed some. Then there's the Lynch/von Trier section where most of our series are located. (yes, that means Twin Peaks, Riget, the Stephen King remake of Riget called Kingdom Hospital and... we don't really own that many other tv-series).
The rest is sorta mixed together, but it takes up four rooms and most of our DVDs are stored in our livingroom anyway. I just abducted the things I like best, meaning half of them aren't actually mine.
There's some books there too. Mostly mythical beasts things and houmor books. A few CDs too, but nothing remarkable. And tiny little foreign books about critters. I can't read them, but the illustrations are cool.

Moving on now. Comics.
I don't actually own that many, but they have about four rooms to themselves. I mostly buy trade paperbacks. What I have that is worth mentioning is most of Transmetropolitan, everything published in TPB form of Fables, Flight 1-5 and Absolute Sandman volume 1, 2 and 3. I'm waiting for volume 4. Some day I'll know how it ends.
There's a few translated french ones too, and odd little one-off things. And a little illustrated book about the nego's portrayal in comics.
And some behind-the-scenes books too. I really like that kind of books, but I don't have a lot of them strangely enough.

I think I'll stop now, I just got caught up in it.
As to the other question, what it tells about me... Hm.
I guess you wouldn't really be able to tell my age from the books in my room. Mostly it's bright, colorful things that screams "I'm a kid!" at you. I probably do cling to my childhood a bit, and it shows, but I don't see that as a bad thing. At the same time there is some hints that I can be serious too. There's some really tough, gritty subjects hidden here and there. Books that deal with death and disfigurement. Most of the comics are meant for a mature audience. Generally I thing it shows that I'm interested in visually stimulating things. And that I like a bit of chaos in my life. I don't know, that's just my guess.

Did anybody actually read this far? If you did, have a figmental cookie. You deserve it.
Because I may as well show a bit of pride. ^___^

Let's see... *Glances up*

I've got a jewellery box, my DS, and some fruit that's so old it might kill me if I actually ate it. Behind that are my cd's, DS games, how to draw manga and game character's and '' couples since I'm not that great at drawing realistic interaction between characters. There's also some anime (most of its Studio Ghibli and Naruto), some movies and a few note books.

Then above that's my manga and novels, cook books (that I've never used), an elderflower drink and glue.

On the top shelf are my art reference books and some history ones too. Also the good luck cards people gave me when I first started Uni. And my Necronomicon is placed precariously on the edge up there with my sowing kit on top of it. I should probably move that...

Animorphs was my favorite thing as a kid, next to Pokemon. ahh, memories <3

I started college this year and only took my favorite books with me, which was a hard thing to do since we actually have a library room (though admittedly we use the shelves for VHS tapes and video games too)...but this is what I have now:

Watchmen
Catch-22
It's Kind of a Funny Story
Middlesex
A Clockwork Orange
Jennifer Government
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Great Gatsby
Fahrenheit 451
A Tale of Two Cities
1984
and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. 8D

My bookshelf has a crapton of manga and other comics that no longer fit (really I have no more room for ANYTHING in my room) and every book I've collected throughout life that I still want to keep.

Admittedly I didn't read much when I was younger, so there's a huge jump between a few awesome children's books and a bunch of grown-up literature.

Lotsa fantasy. <3

During the process of moving several times I lost my earliest childhood books. On the other hand I still have paper back editions of E.E. "Doc" Smith's Skylark of Space series bought while still in my late teens. For pleasure I keep going back to Terry Pratchett's Diskworld Books, Glen Cook's Garrett P.I. series, and David Eddings' Belgariad and other volumes. Oh, and I like the Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake and Meredith series. Go figure.

It's become very difficult for me to find fantasy works that I like.

The non fun stuff ranges from everything one would need to teach grades one through twelve in most subject areas . The wife is into British mysteries in a huge way and so we have quite a bit of that sort of thing. Basically we have a house so that we can store our books.

Oh, and because we are both history buffs of WWII , we have quite a collection on that subject. Because I was in the Navy and on submarines we have a large and quite rare collection of books about those particular weapons of war.

Then there is . . . no, it's beyond impossible to list everything, although to give her credit, the wife did try to catalog everything a few years ago.

IF you have read the Discworld books, have you ever checked out "Good Omens" with Pratchett and Gaiman? It is a very excellent book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.
