The title says it all. Which 3 RPGs, for any platform, do you think are the best in the world?

1) Fallout 2
2) SMT: Nocturne
3) Xenogears
I haven't played an RPG in years so this list is kinda outdated.

Fine with me.
My three are:
3) Geneforge 2, by Spiderweb Software, for Mac/PC
The BEST sci-fantasy RPG. And, it's set in a world a little different from the Tolkienesque world you're used to...
2) Chrono Trigger, by Nintendo, for SNES (and PlayStation, but they botched that version)
Really, what can you say? Great storyline, awesome music, neat everything.
AND FINALLY, THE #1 RPG EVER (in my opinion):
1) Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, by Nintendo, for SNES
I know. A bit of an odd choice, you might say. But this RPG is awesome, with variety, great music and graphics, and all of your favorite characters from Super Mario!
Also, Bowser becomes a party member halfway through. Seriously.
Ok, the field's open-- what, in your opinion, are the 3 greatest RPGs ever?
P.S. MMORPG's don't count and need not apply.

1. Final Fantasy Tactics
The first true tactical RPG I ever played. I looooooove the convoluted storyline. I spent hours mentally dissecting the motives and twists.
2. Lunar Silver Star Story
Such an immersive anime RPG. The first of its kind I played. I was crying at the end not because the ending is sad, but because it was over.
3. Skies of Arcadia
The best high-adventure RPG I've ever played. The main characters never rubbed me the wrong way. The airship battles are amazing. Like Game Informer said, if there is a game just about the airship battles, it'd still be worth buying.
Honorable Mention: Final Fantasy 7
It probably would've made it on the list if I had ever finished playing it back in the day when it was awesome. I've never finished this game, so I hope they do make a remake so I can play it.

3. Baten Kaitos : It might not have the best graphic but it makes up for it with its card-based gameplay.
2. Paper Mario and The Thousand year old door: This game has great game play and a great storyline but what I really like about this game is that it's absolutely hilarious.
1. Tales of Symphonia: This game made me love rpgs, it's just so amazingly good, I don't know where to start.

Hmm..
3:Final
Fantasy Tactics Advance Loved that game, along with any other tactical RPG.
2:Legaia 2
You've never heard of it, and I doubt you ever will.
1:Golden Sun or Final Fantasy VII
I won't be able to decide untill I play Golden Sun 2 to see where everything goes, but after I get to play it I'll be able to pick one top game.

golden sun 2 is waaaaayyy harder than golden sun 1. the first dungeon, ayer's rock, is one of the most confusing dungeons ever. i won't spoil the ending for you, cause the guy who had it first (i got it pre-owned) had got to the mars lighthouse. let's just say golden sun 1 was a bit more fun than golden sun 2, because golden sun 2 dragged it out too much.

Let's see. It's rather hard to narrow things down to a top 3. I'm not even sure on this order, because they're all more or less the epitome of RPG amazement in my opinion. So, in an arbitrary order of my choosing:
3.)Disgaea
It amazes me how often people love tactics games and haven't even heard of this. Wait, no it doesn't. NIS games don't get a lot of attention. A shame. Hard to argue with an SRPG that has 9+ endings, New Game+, a level cap of 9999, a senate to vote on proposals you request, secret bosses all the way up to level 7500, sections with randomized levels... okay, I'm done. I have to recommend either of the two Disgaeas though, great times had by all.
2.)SMT:Nocturne
Atlus was doing Pokemon back before it was cool. They had the monster-catching mechanics all the way back on the NES. Nocturne's just the most recent version. It's basically a more complex pokemon with a more adult plot. And it has Dante from DMC making a guest appearance.
1.)SMT: Persona 3
I like Atlus and NIS. Bet you couldn't tell. Persona 3's the newest SMT, just came out recently. Still, it gets lots of bonus points for trying to do almost everything differently. It's interesting to have a game where you get to see the hero doing things other than going on his quest to save the world. Not to mention the persona mechanics and... okay, I'm done now.
Basically, anything from NIS or Atlus is hard to go wrong with.

Deus Ex on the PC. Marketed as an FPS but just as much an RPG in terms of game play.
Knights of the Old Republic on X-Box. Possibly the best story line of any RPG.
And, for sheer originality as much as anything else ... ummmm - one I can't remember the name of! Made by the Baldur's Gate people if I remember, rightly. Main character had his history carved into his back. Side-kick was a floating, talking skull. Was another PC game. Can anyone remember? (Damn, that's going to bug me for days now!)

Final Fantasy Tactics -
Its awesome to level up your party to epic levels or play solo with one guy who can kill everything on the board in one turn. Or you could just blaze through it. They tried to do a political/religious story that got a little muddled by the translation but I think I got the gist of what was going on. Like most RPGs I could really give a shit less what was going on bridging me from battle to battle. It was more about the battle system.
Chrono Trigger -
As far as great games go, this one has everything. Great level design, well developed characters (even the main guy who doesn't talk at all has some personality), an interesting time travel gimmick, replayability with a new game+ mode.
Suikoden 2 -
Six person partys are great. You also have over a hundred guys to recruit for your castle, most of which are playable and I'd say 20 or 30 of them are completely different from how anyone else plays. You can also equip dudes with three different sets of magical runes for maximum power. How can you not love having THAT many options? Story is based on Chinese history, I think. You're a guy who gets mixed up in a revolution. This one has some epic villains too, like Neclord The Vampire who returns from the first game and Luca Blight the stuff that all evil villains should be made of.
Honorable Mentions -
Star Wars Knights of the Republic - I loved it, but I loved being evil so much that I never bothered to play through it again. Plus I traded it to a guy for Conkers Bad Fur Day about three days after I beat it, so I never spent as much time with it as I'd have liked to.
Planescape Torment - You actually role play in this one. Pretty interesting story too. You wake up dead and try and figure out whats going on.
Fallout - I'd almost list this one as a favorite, but I'm not much of a PC gamer for whatever reason.
Diablo - Its what all the MMORPGs try and emulate and it can be fun, but just when you want it to go on more and more, its over.
Fable - Hardly an RPG at all, but again, just when it gets really good, its over. I really wanted this one to be as epic as it could be.
I've a lot of stuff on my "to play" list that are new-er RPGS, like Blue Dragon, shadow hearts, and the Disgaa stuff. A lot of the recent PS2 rpgs I've not played because of my lack of a PS2. A lot of them look pretty damn good. I didn't try out Kingdom Hearts 2 either.

Planescape Torment. One of the best actual RPG's because the whole point was playing the role of another character. Had some of the best writing to grace a video game and a fantastic and original world although the game was a bit too "talky" sometimes.
Still, I appreciate any game where you can talk it out with the final boss instead of fighting them. Shoot, you could beat Fallout without killing a single person.

Because it's also fun to make them realize they're impotent so they kill themselves.
