Are you sure you were watching the right series? Gurren Lagann's animation is top notch with only episode 4 being kinda crappy.

And no. Tits and ass isn't the only focus of Gurren Lagann. Yoko is actually a pretty awesome character despite her revealing clothing choices.

Currently I'm re-watching Hellsing and a flash anime called Xin.

OK I've been watching Busou Renkin on recommendation from this thread... 4 more eps to go.

God I hate it. I'm so deleting this entire series as soon as I'm done watching it. As I thought, the entire series is completely derivative. I can feel the BLEACH and the SCRYED oozing out of its pores. And the 2 lead characters are utterly uninteresting. And the lead hero... ack ever since eps.2 I've been hoping he would DIE DIE DIE.

And the dialog is so repetitive, I've learned Jpnese shonen words from it...

tatakai - fight
mina - everyone (as in "I must protect everyone" )
mamou - protect
shika shito - "wake up" or "don't die" or whatever
daijobu - "are you ok?"

Seriously you hear these words 50 times per episode.

Every time I hear "mina" I want to strangle that guy. The only character I can bear in the entire series is the ditzy kid sister, and she's basically Orihime. Oh, that eagle guy was really cool.

My time would have been better spent watching Naruto fillers... I think I'll go find those now.

There is an "r" in "mamoru". Are you sure you aren't referring to "shikari shite" and not "shika shito"? Granted I've never watched Busou Renkin, but "shika shito" seems more like something you would say when you can't bring yourself to kill someone. "Shikari shite" is often used to tell people to "hang in there" and you frequently see it used when someone is falling unconscious or is about to die.

You're most likely right. I'm not trying to pronounce those phrases correctly.

I absolutely refuse to learn Jpnese. That's the most sure sign that someone is officially an otaku. But that anime was so repetitive that I now have some phrases drilled into my head, incorrectly pronounced notwithstanding.
