Just as a heads up, I'd really prefer if future threads had more substance. I'm tempted to lock this as spam if it doesn't lead to some kind of conversation.

Ugh.. I tried Sonic in 3D and it did nothing but give me motion sickness after ten minutes of playing. I have no idea if the game was good or not, because I couldn't watch the screen long enough to find out. :[

SEGA needs to stop making these lackluster Sonic games, and actually finish the game many people have been waiting for since the second one came out, five years ago.
Yup, Shenmue.

Rather than Shenmue, I'd like more House of the Dead. Maybe make a HotD for the Wii or something.
I think the final game Sonic should appear in is Smash Bros. Brawl. Then he should retire.

The problem I have had with the newer Sonic games is that for the most part they are generic platform games. The only worthwhile stages are the faster-paced Sonic stages. Sega feels compelled to expand on the experience with these slower and more often than not, boring stages with other characters. I'm hoping the new game coming out for the Wii breaks that trend.

My biggest quip with Sonic 3D is the jumping. To compensate for difficulty of the whole jumping, they adding a homing feature, which broke the pace of the game in my opinion. There's too much "Check it out, I'm going over a loop!" going on than real speed.

The old 2D games had a lot of that, too, though. There were a lot of stages you could just breeze through without doing much of anything apart from holding right and jumping every now and then. The newer games had some annoying issues with switching directions too much, slowing down the faster stages and those "on rails" areas where you really seemed to watch Sonic run more than you actually played the game. The trailers I've seen for the Wii game seem to be more about actually running through the stages. Plus the lack of other characters keeps the game squarely focused on those elements that made past games more fun. I'll still wait to read the reviews, but from what I've seen it does seem like it could be an improvement over past games. It's just too bad Sega won't go back to making the games bilingual. I really hate the 4kids voice overs.

I don't see Shadow as a strength in any way. Sonic was already created as an "edgy" version of the existing game companies mascots (compare the be-spiked, fast running hedgehog to the dumpy, moustachioued plumber), and he already had a rival in the form of Knuckles. Aside from which, he's also had a rotating door of "evil duplicates" in the form of the Metal Sonics. Shadow is just painfully redundant, and people are starting to realize that. To differentiate him a bit they're giving him vehicles, but as an energy manipulating being who can run at Mach 5, it just seems really stupid.
I see a lot of potention in the Wii Sonic, but I'm afraid that the control scheme is going to end up as a distracting gimmick instead of being more intuitive than the standard joystick. I'm going to be pissed if I'm playing the game and start thinking to myself, "Man, if I could just use a controller, this game would be awesome".
As I've learned from the portable games; Sonic is still good, Sega just needs to ease up on the gimmicks and new characters.

Exactly. A game full of fast Sonic levels would be awesome, but SEGA won't make that. Instead they add crappy levels or guns into the mix. Bleh.

Just making more fast levels wouldn't be enough, I think. A big problem I've had with the Sonic series in 3D is that the level design is often terrible. Levels are either too easy (full of "on rails" moments where you don't have to control Sonic at all), or too artificially difficult (long, thin paths over cliffs that make it very hard to actually go fast). And of course, there's the infamous uncooperative camera and the occasional 90 degree turns that it fails to compensate for.
What I want to see again is what we had in the classic Sonic Games; namely, one game. In all the 2D games, every character ran through the same levels, though various options were only available to certain characters because of their unique abilities. I think the 3D Sonic games should embrace that, instead of making Knuckles' levels irritating "Hot or Cold" search missions and turning Tails' levels into mech battles. The problem with this scheme is that it gets repetitive after a while, so in addition I feel that the story shouldn't require you to beat the game with each individual character if you don't want to. Sonic Heroes tried that, but since all the teams were essentially the same there wasn't enough variety in what you could do between teams. The new Sonic game moves in this direction, but the level design and camera is still abysmal.
I'm afraid that these days it seems that Sonic Team is caught up too much in presentation and not enough in actual gameplay.

I've never been one who liked the Sonic games. It just felt like you'd run at blinding speed until they placed an enemy in front of you and you'd get hit. The next time you ran through that part you'd hopefully remember to jump or something. Still, I enjoyed Sonic Rush, the only Sonic game I've ever owned.
I think Sonic's last hope may be the Secret Rings game they have coming out for the Wii. After the turd piles they put out on the PS3 and Xbox360, in addition to last generation's failures, I think people are really starting to doubt Sega's ability to put out a good Sonic game. But this upcoming Wii game has actually had positive reactions. Ironically it wasn't even made by Sonic team. Maybe that's not ironic though.

Considering Sonic Team's last five games in the franchise have been a steady decline in quality, I would think taking them off the job could only be a good thing. I hear a lot of the problms with the more recent games are even because of decisions made by Yuji Naka. With Naka gone, maybe we can see Sega bring in some new blood and improve their tarnished image with a few decent games.

I dunno, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the Gamecube is my favorite Sonic game ever. The emerald hunting levels annoyed me, but everything else rocked. I completely mastered Sonic and Shadow's levels. Probably the most fun video game I've ever played actually, aside from Mario Sunshine. But I actually beat Sonic.
So I'm hoping the new Wii Sonic game is more like that. Because SA2 was awesome.
I don't really like the 2D games though.

I have to agree that SA2 probably had the best 3D Sonic levels I've seen. Not without their flaws, of course, but definitely better than most of what else is out there. It was just all the "fluff" on that game that I disliked.
