Instead of jumping in the bandwagon and saying halo sucks, I'm actually going to find something I like in it, and praise it for that.
So far, I'm halfway through halo 2 on legendary, and it's actually pretty fun. The whole story of halo is wonderful if you get into it. At the moment, the flood are what are interesting me what with the whole colony-gravemind thing.
EDIT: I'm stuck at the last level, fighting tartarus... I should've gone through the game on a lower difficulty D:
EDIT: started halo 3. I'm on the third level. It's really hard on legendary... 'specially since I put the mythic skull on.
Another EDIT: I'm on the orange flood level. I am wondering whether to throw my xbox 360 at the wall or halo 3 at the wall.
EDIT 003: BAHAHA! I BEAT HALO 3 LEGENDARY WITH THE MYTHIC SKULL ON! That means, I've beaten all three. Yes. I am happy with myself.

It's mostly the hype, I think. If anything is touted as the greatest thing ever, and when approached it is merely "good", then people treat it like it's actually terrible.

That's pretty much it right there.
And I think some people are resentful that Halo dragged a lot of non-gamers into gaming, and they feel that this new "Halo generation" of gamers doesn't know enough about gaming to see what's really good.
But the way I see it, Halo must have done something right for it be popular. You can't trick people into thinking they're having fun (for very long). I've tried Halo and from what I can tell it's a perfectly solid FPS game acceptable flaws.

I played the first Halo and frankly found it boring. The reason why I didn't stop playing it immediately was because Bungie created this simple pick up and play style of shooting game which is pretty excellent. Also, the first level in the first game was really well done, there was nothing better than being dropped on a beach and fighting your way up. It was in the likes of Metal of Honor: Frontline, which had one of the best opening sequences in video games, albeit much sorter.
It's a good series, just not the best. It's incredibly easy to say you've played this and hated it, just to look cool and hardcore cause hardcore gamers don't play Halo.

Yes I know that this game is retarded. It's also fun for some retarded reason.
This one is less retarded, but it's mostly just fun for the trolling

The first bored me to death, what with all the generic environments and backtracking.
The second was alright, but the story didn't interest me, and the game was unbalanced, making multi a pain.
The third is pretty fun. Short, but diverse, and well balanced. Too bad it took them two games to get it mostly right.

I actually don't hate it. I think it's like plain yoghurt, it's edible, but not terribly exciting. The third was the best I think, it was like the plain yoghurt, only you had the bright idea of pouring cocoa powder in to see if it livens it up. Which it does for a while.
But the Flood just piss me off, you start off with interesting tactical gun fights. You can't just run in a shoot or you get butchered, but then the Flood come along and the only strategery you have is 'shoot it until it stops moving'. IT'S BORING.
I really need to stop using food analogies when I'm hungry and have no access to food of any kind.

Actually I love Halo. I like Halo one the best too, it feels most familiar to me and I like the levels.(Gotta love that sidewinder) I have Halo 3 too, but I can't stand it, I hate the multplayer levels. I mainly like it cause it's a fun game to play with friends though.

The forge mode is the best redeeming quality. It needs work though. Bungie should just make a game to the effect of LittleBigPlanet.

Eh. It's not a bad game really, and really it can be quite fun. I also like being able create a Covenent Elite character instead of a Spartan. The only problems I have with Halo are more problems that I have with the FPS/Wargame genre rather than the game itself. The tunnel vision effect of the first person POV drives me crazy, and I get bored with missions. Versus mode with vehicles is fun though.

Run away, wait for Johnson to snipe him, causing his shields to drop, then unload FTW. If he doesn't die the first time, rinse and repeat.

I call this the "Phantom Menace" Effect.
I, however, actually thin halo sucks. But then I generally think 99% of FPSs suck, so I'm not really specifically hating on the game as much as the genre

Well, here comes my thoughts on Halo...
I would rate the Halo series 7/10. After playing through story mode I'd say it's pretty good. Problem is, I like the single player better than the multiplayer D: That's probably the metroid fan in me, anyway. The only problem I had with it is, Halo: Combat Evolved I found to be extremely cliche. But, the weapons had cool 'B' attacks and some of them had rather interesting attributes and uses. I found the battery system that the covenant had was strange, but I liked it. Problem with the game is the music and some of the missions were boring. Very boring.
Halo 2, though, was a redeemer in the series because of the Gravemind and brutes. I like them. Problem is, some weapons lost their super duper cool 'B' attacks, such as the needler. SPIKING PEOPLE IN THE FACE IS FUN. And they completely removed the assault rifle. That was one of my very favourite weapons in Halo: Combat Evolved even if it was just the beginning weapon. The brutes and Tartarus were pretty cool characters, to be honest.
Let's go to Halo 3 now. Story mode? No question about it, it was the best of the three. Captain Keyes and Seargent Major Johnson were killed... and so was 343 Guilty Spark D: Those were sad parts. The only complaint I have is that some of the weapons were completely useless. The spartan laser? Seriously, if I needed a big-ass laser beam, it wouldn't be one that takes 2 seconds of charging. And that I could only use five times. The only new weapons I actually did like was the brute spiker and the assault rifle. The brute spiker... That gun is awesome. Even if it was crude. It was fun to use. Especially when whacking flood with the blades at the end of it. The second one, the assault rifle, may not've been new, but I liked it anyway, because it at least made a return.
That entire thing is opinionated, though.

I've played a some halo. And to me, the story isn't the greatest, but its nowhere near the worst, And like some said, it can be enjoyable when you get into it. But anyways that wasn't why I really played it, I played because with the right people it makes for a very entertaining multiplayer game.
