this would probably be directed to ozone or cartoonprofessor,

How does the 20wsx or 21sx cintiq feel?

My intuos3 stopped working today, and I've had it for about 2 years now. D:

So i figured I wanted a cintiq. I was thinking getting the 12wx and keeping one of my monitors, because I'm used to making small strokes.

Although it would be cool playing an RTS with the 20wsx or 21sx.

but yea, how does the 20wsx or 21sx cintiq feel?

Your Intuos3 stopped working after 2 years? o_O
Are you sure that's not a computer fault? My Intuos1 12x12 that I got in 2001 still works perfectly. And the only differences between that and the later models are mostly superficial. heh. I'm almost sorry I sold it :)

The Cintiq 21 isn't as amazing as its reputation. It feels just like an Intuos pretty much, but it's more convenient in that you've got the monitor and tablet all in one unit. Having it makes me feel more obligated to work on my stuff though ^_^

yea, I handle my stuff a bit wee too rough. I've dropped it about several times accidentally while spinning around in my chair.

I'm stuck between if I want to shell out 2k to replace both my monitors, or only 1k and keep one of them.

so I'm guessing the i'll go with the 12sx, cause I can work on it directly, or use it as a normal tablet.

The video that Wacom have on the site makes it look cool.

Keep in mind I have never used a tablet.

I have the Cintiq 21ux (going on 2 years this January) and my friend recently bought the 12ux

They are both more than I could have ever hoped. But probably anything beats the pants off having to scan in work =p

I have read that you (being accustomed to tablets) will have to adjust to your own hand being in the way of the screen.

The 21UX has excellent resolution. The screen seems a bit darker than my other monitors which takes some adjusting as far as making an image look good in all screens. The feel, I'll have to describe a transition from paper.

The learning curb is very small from paper. In a matter of days I was drawing images near the same level or better than what I could do on paper.

For cheaper variety I would recommend the 12ux

The resolution isn't as nice and it is nowhere near as large as it's 21ux counterpart, but it works just as well from my experience playing around with it at my friend's house.
I want to get the 12ux to go with a laptop myself.

I'm not sure exactly what the learning curb for someone used to using a tablet would be. Draw with pencil again and that kinda gives you an idea of how it feels.

Except with all the digital fun you can add with your software.

Out of every investment I have ever made, aside from my house, the cintiq is my fav.
Definitely my favorite "toy" =P

EDIT: is it "sx"? I thought it was "ux"... ah well, you know which I am referring too ^^

EDIT2: You can use both 21 and 12 as tablets without having to use the "draw direct on screen feature. The 21 has new drivers that enable you to use it as a tablet.
Search you tube vids for reviews people have made. You'll find neat stuff there =D

one more thing, have any of you tried using a ruler on your Cintiqs?

that's another thing with getting perspective down and all that.
using the shift key is feels really cumbersome, and the lines are too straight for my taste.

I'd never use a ruler on the Cintiq... o_O
Too much risk of damage!

And protecting it just or a ruler effect isn't worth it. I make straight lines like I always have: just just the line shape tool in Photoshop and then match it freehand in another layer, then get rid of the original :).

Yeah, I have one of my Cintiq buttons set to switch screens so that the Cintiq basically becomes a tablet for a while, but I only use that to access the other screen. I'd prefer to make myself more used to the Cintiq.

You get used to drawing on the screen going from the tablet pretty quick, but as a tool for digital interaction it's a much bigger and more noticeable jump if you're going from paper than another pen tool device: it's exactly the same technology, only the marks are closer to the end of the pen. ;)

This is software related... but when draw I use a program called Manga Studio.

For ruler heavy pictures (say perspective pics) it has a perspective ruler.
It has 1,2,and 3point perspective. Though I just recently learned how to use them they have been very useful.

I only use the switch screen button to get colors from the other screen. I would never draw off of the cintiq screen.

That defeats the purpose of it. And for me it would require even more learning curb =P

If you like, but as JustNoPoint and I've said, there are other ways...

Haha, if using it as a pressure-variated drawing surface doesn't wreck it, then using a ruler on it won't wreck it. (As long as you pick the ruler up when you move it around, don't slide it). The screen is flat with the frame, so it seems ideal to use something like a ruler on. (However, if you're just using it for a line, use the line tool as mentioned, or you might damage your nibs.) I'm sure if you really want to use rulers and stuff with a cintiq there are screen protectors you can buy, but that would change the texture of the drawing surface and make it feel less natural.

You're not actually drawing on the cintiq's screen. If you were drawing on the screen, you'd see the lcd pixels do their wonky thing as you drew. You're drawing on a super-durable, thin plastic layer above the screen. The thing that damages that is firstly dirt- keep it clean and dust-free, wear a thin cloth glove or something when you use it, and keep any implements clean like the pen+nib, rulers, etc. If there's no dirt on it, there's nothing to catch on and make scratches.

However, the shortcut to perspective is google sketchup! Download it (it's free) and super-easily make boxes, etc, move the camera around to set up the perspective you want. Then save a screengrab or what have you, place it as the temporary background, and voila! The top of your box becomes your perspective-person height-guideline. (Also great for perspective shortcuts on backgrounds)

:P I was thinking about dragging a metal ruler across the plastic surface... And scratching. :(
Bad for the image and the nibs.

I understand perspective well enough to fake it without rulers. When I get it wrong, I'd get it wrong anyway... mental blindspots make you do silly things. Where I have more trouble is with figures in perspective, and irregularly shaped complex objects generally. -_-
But many of my pages have their share of line too drawn lines anyway ^___^

You know, with the Cintiq, my biggest fear is that Simon, my tomcat will leap on it one day. slide off, and use his claws to catch a hold... :(

I have that fear too Ozone... multiply it x3 though. I have 3 cats o_-

Not to mention how annoying it is if one sneezes on the screen while you are drawing.

1 of the cats has a habit of only wanting to stay near my drawing hand the whole time as I draw. Little bugger messes with me a lot. When she could easily go to the OTHER hand for petting. Not to mention she likes to activate the zoom strip on the right side too =p

so i ordered the 12wsx and it should be here before friday or sooner.

I've tried Google sketch up before. Just ended up sticking to the ruler because it feels natural for me.

I was watching this one review on youtube, and the dude said, according to wacom, the screen protectors would void your warranty.

I find it ridiculous how they charge almost $20 for that art glove thingy.

While you can find nomex flight gloves around $6-$14. And "They feel like you're wearing nothing at all!"
