That being said, I'd love it if DD had a stats page that would tell us these things automatically... like, how many comics there are, what percentages make up what genres, Top 100 stats, etc. Because I find stats really interesting.

Oh my gosh, me too.
I played D&D for years because I loved rolling multiple sided dice and calculating the odds of their outcomes.
I love looking at statistics.

Since Bryan suggested it and I'll do anything at the moment to avoid my english essay I'm going to try to compile the female/male/unknown ratio of the top 100 comics...
*LIST OF AWESOME*...

You are amazing!

nteresting statistics, but they don't really mean much since there's nothing to compare them to. Are the percentages higher or lower than they are for second 100 or the middle 100 DD comics? For DD as a whole? Are they a representative cross section of DD comics or are the numbers significantly different?

I can make a few guesses about that (like, I would guess that there is a higher percentage of excellently colored comics in the top 100 than the percentage on DD as a whole), but they would all be assumptions.

I should have compared the top 50 to the 51-100 range. The data is old now. The comic rank has moved already. On another night when there's nothing to do I'll get back on it.

Yuri doesn't necessarily mean fan service, fyi.

I heard from a guy friend that even seeing Lesbians kiss is a big turn on.

Well anyway glad to see some more stuff. I'm surprised that the ratio of girls and guys at DD is almost the same. I bet Smackjeeves would have more girls. And I used to think that comics was a guy thing. Does this mean comics are being taken over by girls?? I have noticed that mostly girls are art majors at the colleges I go to...

I hear lesbians are quite fond of that kinda stuff, too.

When looking to invite people to the Webcomic Tarot, I was of course inviting people from comics I read. Almost all of them were female. In fact, I think everyone who joined via my invite is female.

I read a lot of fantasy comics. Almost all of them are female-driven. Same for a good deal of story comics.
I don't read a lot of gag comics. A lot of males happen to do that kind.
There are probably as many story comics as there are gag comics on this site. Hmm...

certainly is an interesting split. i guess it is safe to say here on DD it is a 50/50% male/female ratio. with 50% of the most popular also being colored, fantasy,
japanese style...or all three. i would certainly be interested in seeing how these stats play out, and it is refreshing to hear that on DD it is not as "manga" and "sonic sprite" heavy as some of the other sites.

personal info time:
i don't think that i've ever mentioned it here.....a lot of my comic and illustraion style is heavily influenced by japanese comic artists. all the way back to the late 80s when i started to write and draw "stories." i even moved to tokyo in 2000 as part of a graduate school program to study comics and animation. i must say that i've learned a lot about how and why things are done they way they are in japan comics-wise. it would even be possible for me to illustrate and entire story, complete with old school half tones....but i personally choose not to. i feel the "anime/manga/japanimation" style is too generic in this day and age(very much like disney for the past 50 years).

so, that said....i could very easily write a full colored photoshopped comic story based off a fantasy adventure (i have 2 different scripts i've written) that has a very detailed and fanciful "japanese" feel to it (much like lodoss wars), hell, i could even change some of the names and characters to reflect WoW.

but i don't for 2 reasons......i'm not getting paid to do that. i have a full time job and i am working on a career as a tattoo artist and i don't have that kind of time to invest into a hobby.
and second....i don't want to. i enjoy my loose cartoony style and i'm just interested in telling this insane story and not trying to reach a "demographic"

I hear lesbians even are fond of doing that in private without any men watching, and doing it for reasons other than titillating men!

Some people have foot fetishes, but that doesn't mean that any comic with feet in it is fanservicing. Lesbians aren't just a plot device to get more dudes to read a comic, and not all lesbian kisses are fanservice.

I must admit, I feel a little insulted having my sexual orientation chalked up to fanservice.

Don't feel too insulted. Any kiss is a fan pleaser -- especially if it doesn't happen often or is between characters that fans follow. If they are rare enough, even a very innocent peck is, in a way, "fan service." Just think of all the TV shows that teased their audiences by suggesting a building relationship between main characters but denying them a simple kiss for a long time.

Having lesbians in a story doesn't make it fan service, but any time they "make out" is at least as much fan service as a straight couple making out. ;)

That said, I don't know why (many?) men are enthralled by lesbians. Or why (many?) teenage girls like to see effeminate guys making out... But since there are fanatical followings of such genres, some people will view ANY comic in those genres as "fan service." And some of them are. Just like some people draw in a more Japanese style because it's "popular." It is very insulting to think everyone does it for that reason. A lot of people draw that way because it is a style they genuinely enjoy -- having nothing at all to do with their "fans."

What mostly got me was the original post in this thread, where it categorized female fan service as "big boobs, adult, and yuri comics". No mention of straight couples being fanservice. Just yuri/yaoi.

Yeah, I don't think a genre can be fan service. If so, it would probably include all "romance" stories. Yaoi/yuri should be romance stories, but I have noticed on Drunkduck and elsewhere people will call ANY story with lesbian characters "yuri" which isn't accurate. An adventure story with lesbian main characters is "adventure" not "yuri."

(To be honest, I haven't seen many heterosexual romance comics around the internet though... Straight people must be boring -- unless they're half animal. o_0 )

@usedbooks

Calling something 'yuri' pretty much guarantees you a small niche horde of fans that will snowball as time goes on, it gets people interested faster than 'yet another adventure webcomic with mediocre art and 2dimentional characters', etc.

And Megan_Rose i'm pretty sure jillyfoo didn't mean it in an offensive way, personally i see most yaoi comics as fanservice since i've yet to see even one that wasn't about an emo sex boy or uke/seme seductions)

Just like calling Garfield a "furry." ;)

I wasn't knocking it, btw, just pointing that inconsistency out. If it works, go for it. Maybe you'll inspire some depth into the minds of the shallow people who were looking for softcore porn and ended up finding an actual story instead.

Damn. I wish I could find some inaccurate label to slap on my comics to lure unsuspecting hoards of niche/genre fans. Sigh.

That's actually brought me a LOT of readers. To the point where the unofficial motto is "Come for the lesbians, stay for the story".

I almost wanted to mislabel one of my comics, but it seems more liable to drive people (or at least readers worth having) away these days, since there's a mass of shitty yaoi on the internet. :( It pains me.

Telling the truth is hard, though. People don't want the truth! They want the same old shit over and over again!

Oh poo. Even heterosexual kissing can be a turn on. Gee wiz. Don't take it so bad. Comics are a visual medium and people can take it in many different ways especially if it's a romance genre. I was categorizing female fan service as fan service for people(male and female) that are attracted to women.
