I have posted this question all over the internet. Its interesting that depending on the community will influence the result of what's more popular

So how do you prefer to read your comics (print or web)? why

And as a creator, how do you prefer to make your comics? why

When I'm reading a comic, it doesn't matter if it's in color, shaded, lineart, whatever. As long as the art looks good. Sloppy art will automatically keep me from reading a comic.

As for me, all the other comics I've done in the past were black and white because I find black and white faster to shade with then color. But the comics I'm working on now are in full color because I think it fits the mood and it makes things look more pretty in my opinion :D

I use screen tones and coloring , I think it gives my comic a unique look and can add some texture in spots.

It's just a matter of figuring out how to make the most of both.

I really don't mind, but I really prefer black & white over a bad colored comic. When colored right it's awesome, but to me it takes too much time. Look at my comic, it's not even shaded, haha.

Print. Why? Because its so much easier to read. because you arent distracted by myspace, and aim, and because its portable. You can take it with you.

I think I missunderstood what you were asking.

I prefer color comics, as long as they are done well. There are a few black and white comics I like, but color adds to the art. I love artists like Dave Mckean, very detailed and emotional art. I love how he uses mixed media, and some of that needs color to really work.

I prefer print comics at times. It just depends. The amateur stuff, like webcomics are good to me when they're on the computer, though.

I love color comics- unless a person can pull off the Frank Miller Sin City style perfectly, or has -gorgeous- line art like FAL's "Hello NANO", then I usually dislike the black and white.

Nadya- a tale about what happens to SOME of us when we die.

Currently: Nadya is awake and asking more relevant questions.

I prefer print, but web is fun (and good when you have no $$$).

In print, I like B&W. I just do. It feels more familiar to me (reading Far Side and Garfield books in my youth and manga in adulthood), and I like simple drawing styles too. It makes it so much easier to follow the story or jokes.

On the web, I like both. The B&W has the same familiarity as the print and can make a story easy to follow. There is a different sort of talent needed to set the scene and define the characters (no hair or eye colors to set them apart). Color is fun too. I think the brain works differently when using it. I usually view comics like I'm reading a book rather than looking at art, but with color, I find it demands a little more of my eyes. :) (If you can't tell, I'm a literature, not an art, sort of person.)

For creating, I color only the first page of each chapter... because I suck at coloring. I hope readers can approach my comic more like a book than a piece of art, because they won't find much art to appreciate. :-/

I like either one, as long as it's well done. Some of my favorite comics are Sam and Fuzzy , Mac Hall , and Sinfest [sinfest.net].

As far as creating, I prefer color. I need an excuse for updating only twice a week.
It's a comic!

It doesn't matter to me if it's color or B&W. If a comic has a good story to start with, then I'll definitely read it. If a comic with excellent quality in coloring or inking, but the story doesn't interest me, I will only glance it like looking at picture books.

I like working in both. I do Ahoy Kids! in color and I really like how it looks. I'm doing Rocketship A Go-Go in about 10 shades of grey, and I think it gives it a nice look that matches the feel of the strip.

Can you imagine Miller's Sin City in bright colours? Or Herge's Tintin in black and white?

And yet - Peanuts looks good both ways.

I say, match the look to the needs of the strip.

Print/Web comics? Web, right now, because I can't afford to buy any print comics. lol! Really, though, I like reading both.

As for black and white or color, it doesn't much matter to me, as long as the comic looks good. I do tend to have a slight preference toward color, but it's not like I won't read a comic if it's black and white. =p (I will, however, not read a comic if the colors are so god-awful that it hurts my eyes to look at them. *-*)

I tend to use colors at different ends of the spectrum with one another. Stuff that looks like it will show up well against something else. Rarely do reds (red, orange, pink, etc) meet with reds. Kind of a science to it, but who cares.

I use tones for print, because it's cheaper. Manga screentones are just black dots, so you print them in B/W, which costs a fraction of printing in grey or colour. For my webcomic though, I enjoy using greyscale, colour and whatever crazy experimental techniques I want, because I can.

Reading:
I like color. I prefer cel-shaded color, because being a line-art artist, I can better appreciate the art skills of the sharp gradation contours. But softer tones are good for certain situations.

Creating:
Strictly grayscale. Coloring takes too long. And I don't have any CG/color skills.

Hmm, I like both, but I think I prefer color most of the time.
I'm not good at recognizing faces, so color helps me do that. It's not that I can't do without them, but it just takes a little more work. It depends a lot on the style too.

And when it comes to crating I think I'm better with color. My lineart isn't that special, so I need something else to make my artwork stand out. I still make black/white things but when I'm in the right mood my colored things are much better (at least that's what I think).
Because I may as well show a bit of pride. ^___^

In print, I'm really not that put off by black and white/tone. Most of the stuff I've been reading lately has been in color. But that's just because of what I've been able to find/afford/buy at the time. Still, I have no problems reading a great b/w comic, be it the latest volume of Bleach, or digging up an old Cerebus phone-book style collection like High Society.

On the web, I guess I'm a bit more picky. I do like colored comics on the web. But I've read B/W web stuff too. It's really more of the content than anything else. If it's funny, or interesting, or makes me want to come back, I'll come back. It's just so many of the ones out there are color that I end up reading mostly color web comics.

And as a creator, how do you prefer to make your comics? why

As a creator, once I learned how to color it really added a whole new shape and dimension to my work. I now feel like naked without my colors. So that really kind of limits me in the realm of printing. I can't afford to self-publish in color. But I think my stuff looks barely half-done in b/w.

Yay for web comics! Color is free!

I don't mind either one, though, for my comic, I would prefer colour.

Well, except for one or two moments.

print. because I can just pick it up and read the comic where as on the web I can't really trust that they'll always be on the internet. like something could happen... and poof the comics? gone.

that's why I prefer print.

print can go poof too, infact, a lot of publishers go poof.

ADV and Ice Kunion is in limbo with their comics...

At least with the web, you've only spend your time and not also your money on a title

I think Puff_Of_Smoke meant the litteral dead-wood-version, and not the puplishers that make them...

Sure, puplishers can dissapear, but when you have a printed comic in your hand it takes a lot to make it go "poof" as you say it.

Both methods have their risks, but we'll have to remember that everything go poof sooner of later. Even Earth itself. ;)

Oh, and a little ps. There is comics on the internet you have to pay to see. So you can both spend time and money on online things too. Where there's potential costumers there's somebody willing to sell.

I meant the printed book it self.

So far, unless its a well established publisher, it doesnt take much for a print version to go poof

and with web comics, you have a choice to pay for it or not ( I wouldnt). With print, you have too (well at lest you're supposed to and not just read it in the bookstores) pay for all of the comics, not just a choice of few.

True, true. but the idea that once something is printed that copy exist untill somebody purposefully destroy i t or it rot up is very calming to me. I may just be funny like that. You could say the same about the internet, that It'll be there always unless somebody delete it.

It's a discussin I've seen before, and I usually take the printed side because I'm a book-person.
But I enjoy both.
There's the wonderfull possibilities with webcomics, and the fact that you (usually) don't have to pay more than what you do to get on the net.
On the other hand, besides the delightful feeling of possesion, libraries and/or friends usually lets you read something printed if you don't want to pay for something you don't know what is.
Buuut I've personally always been willing to take a risk when it comes to a new book. I take your point loud and clear about paying. Most of my friends think I'm crazy because I do that. They prefer not risking a bad story. I let them see whatever I think they'll like in the hope they'll buy it and support the artists I like.

Hope that wasn't too confusing. I like to use a lot of words just to say "you're right, but I still love printed books". ;)
Because I may as well show a bit of pride. ^___^
