The end of the world is nigh, according to American cult leader Yisrayl “Buffalo Bill” Hawkins.

Self-proclaimed prophet Hawkins, the founder of the second House of Yahweh religious sect of Abilene, Texas, has predicted that a nuclear holocaust triggering the end of the world will happen today (June 12).

Hawkins’ followers have no doubts about the veracity of their leader’s horrific predictions. Hundreds of truck trailers have been loaded with food and water on the House of Yahweh’s 44-acre compound in preparation for the coming war.

Outside of the sect, the rest of the world has remained decidedly unshaken by Hawkins’ visions of nuclear destruction. That may be because he made exactly the same prediction less than two years ago. Hawkins originally pencilled in September 12 2006 as the beginning of the end. Although that date passed without incident, it didn’t stop his followers from producing an online video countdown to doomsday, donning gas masks and hiding in underground bunkers. They went home in humiliation when there was no war.

But predictions of Armageddon aren’t the only thing that has allowed Hawkins to make headlines. In February 2008, the 73-year-old leader was indicted on four separate bigamy charges and charged with breaking child labour laws. It was alleged that he has 30 wives and had put children as young as 11 to work in the House of Yahweh’s compound.

I think we can safely theorise that anyone who predicts a final date for a world ending event is full of crap. There's a chance they may be right, through way out probability, but it's much more likely to be pure fantasy.

Unless... It's a group of scientists who can prove that an asteroid or something will hit us on such and such a date, or some other event in space will do it?
Apart from that sort of thing... even events like a massive nuclear war are way to hard to predict.

I mean really, you couldn't be that pissed off with him getting wrong. It's better then him being right.

I want to know what his excuse for being wrong is. You know he's going to have one... and not "Well I'm a crazy bastard, what did you expect?"

Or he'll say he forgot to carry the one when doing the calculation

These cults are so stupid. You don't give a firm date for Armageddon! You tell your followers to look for the signs that it's coming:

1. An eroding ethical system
2. Natural disasters seem to happen more often
3. Be on the lookout for a man to gain prominence that wears a hat/turban/pair of sunglasses
4. Vague astrological signs

...but don't be date specific! Then you'll just look like a dork when you're wrong...unless you've included some sort of suicide pact to avoid the end of the world. Of course, then you're either dead or you have to start all over.

But the real key is to act like you are the one true keeper of the truth and that if people support you (mostly with money) that they can actually either prevent the end of the world or bring it about sooner.

Now, if you'd all like to join my cult, you'll see that I really am the one true keeper of the truth. This is how the world ends:

The world will end when the leaders of every nation profess belief in invisible masters. There will be a lot of fire. The Earth will move. There will be many losses of life. A man with a limp will rise to power, though it also might be a woman with a facial tic. Look for decisions made by politicians that many disagree with. That will be a sign of the end times.

I'm planning to be in Palenque touring the Mayan ruins when it happens. I hope it won't be a washout like AD 1000 was, at least AD 1666 had the Great London Plague and Fire.

You look through all the dates of proposed apocolypses and July 28 1914, September 1 1939, November 11 2001 (among so many others) weren't on the lists.

I remember seeing the news report on that guy. Apparently he's predecited the end of the world two other times already...

Also it's probably important to point out he's been predicting nuclear armegeddon, not the rapture.

I'm not gonna be preachy but, if you have a bible, go to Revelations, signs for the end of the world are there. Some are already beginning to happen or have happened over years, such as famine. All I know is we're all probably going to be alive for the Rapture. But I could always be wrong...

Not on my watch, if it's war God wants it's war God gets, we still have enough warheads left from the cold war to blast the enemy away, even if it kills everyone on earth we won't loose this war.
